  • Devon & Cornwall PATW Contestant Wins Regional Final

    Devon & Cornwall’s local PATW winner, Charlotte Levy, has won the South West regional final with her presentation “The Science of Chocolate” and will now go forward to the UK final to be held in Glasgow.   Whilst chocolate doesn’t immediately spring to mind when thinking about science and engineering, you’ll never look at a bar of chocolate in the same way again… In its natural state, the cocoa bean is bitter to taste and almost unrecognisable from the sweet delights available to purchase, and it’s in this transformation through developing knowledge of chocolate chemistry that science and engineering comes into play.   Charlotte’s presentation looked at the basic chemical principles behind the production of chocolate which brings together scientists, engineers and chocolatiers to create aesthetically…

  • IET Global Volunteers Conference 2016

    Over 300 volunteers from across the IET and around the world attended the IET Global Volunteers Conference 2016 at IET London: Savoy Place, to share ideas and learn from each other. It was a great opportunity for delegates to gain insight on how to implement the IET’s strategy, improve volunteer engagement of members and develop “one-team” working across the IET ( #IETOneTeam ). The conference actually combined six volunteering events into one week to coincide with the Members Annual Information Event (16 June, available on IET.TV ).  Other events included Registration and Standards Training, Mentor Training, Communities Volunteer Conference (CVC), Education Volunteers, Council, and the Young Professionals Community Volunteering Conference, culminating in a plenary session on Friday, 17 June…

  • Osprey CSL and MOD A400M PT win prestigious IET ‘Innovation in Safety’ Award

    Osprey CSL is delighted to announce that it has won an IET ‘Innovation in Safety’ award jointly with the MOD for providing safety innovation in the A400M Programme. The winner was determined by an independent panel of judges as part of the MOD’s bi-annual Environmental & Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS) which was held at DE&S Headquarters at Abbey Wood in Bristol.   • Is The Age Of Cyber Warfare Officially Upon Us: The IET Wants To Find Out...

    Some say that 2016 might go down in history as a turning point in the Age of Cyber Warfare. Unlike the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 that signified the era of Nuclear WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) confrontation, the US “cyber bombs” fell down on the infrastructure of ISIS completely silently. Even though they did not cause destruction anywhere near on the scale of Hiroshima it does not mean they went unnoticed or might have lesser significance. In fact, some critics say that cyber attacks should be treated as WMD.     Identifying advances, challenges and opportunities for motion sensing systems in heathcare, the Human Motion Analysis for Healthcare event on 19th May 16 at Savoy Place brought together researchers, academics, technologists and professionals all working in related fields to discuss a variety of presentations,  posters and network with fellow professionals.  With four keynote speakers from Microsoft; and Warwick, Bristol and St George's Universities a key theme running through all was how the technology will transform healthcare delivery, particularly enabling passive healthcare monitoring for the user/ patient.   • Southern California Edison Advanced Technology Labs Visit

    On the 28th June, Members and guests of the SoCal LN were fortunate enough to be able to visit the Advanced Technology Labs of Southern California Edison in Pomona California.  The Pomona facility comprises the Advanced Energy Storage Lab (AES) and the Electric Drive Systems Lab (EDS).  Behind those rather bland titles are several significant projects in tune with the times.  Since Edison’s business is now primarily transmission and distribution, those are what the projects address.  Common to hybrid and electric vehicles and to most renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, is the requirement for energy storage and management.   Therefore much of the work addresses that in its various aspects.  The AES Lab evaluates battery and power electronics systems over a range of environmental…

    Another successful Solar Car challenge 2016 organized by The Cyprus Institute in cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality took place in the heart of the capital on Sunday, June 26, 2016. The opening of the 2016 race took place on Saturday, 25 June, with a spectacular parade of the 10 solar vehicles which crossed the Ledra and Onasagorou streets, ending at Freedom Square where the public had the chance to admire these unique cars, designed and built by students of high schools and technical schools that participated in the race.   • What Does Being A Mentee Look Like?

    We're currently seeking mentees that have been paired through the IET's mentoring service to act as case studies for IET Mentoring Awareness Week later this year. We are particularly interested in hearing from mentees with a different or interesting story of how they met with their mentor for the first time, or those from a non-UK setting to promote the work of mentoring as a global volunteering family. The case studies will be featured on the IET's website and may also be used for promotional purposes through Member News Online or Volunteer Update to promote the mentoring service and to raise the profile of the mentees involved.     On 23 June, the Robotics & Mechatronics TPN joined forces with Satellite Systems and Applications Network and the Aerospace Network for an evening presentation on the Rosetta Spacecraft Mission. Two talks were given, the first by Dr Paolo Ferri and the second by Dr Mark Bentley. There is a great blog posting giving further details here .     Further to the Engineering Council’s recent guidance for engineers entitled Principles for Security, the IET has joined forces with the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) to host an inaugural evening lecture , in London on the 14th July, on integrating threat management in the digital built environment .
