  • Announcing The Winner Of Our PhD Award 2018

    Drum roll please...... Our 2018 winner is  Alberto Padoan .   Alberto was born in Ferrara, Italy, in 1989. He received the Laurea Magistrale degree (M.Sc. equivalent) cum laude in automation engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 2013. He then joined the Control and Power Group at the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Imperial College London, U.K., from which he received the Ph.D. degree in 2018.  Alberto is currently a Research Associate in the Control Group, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, U.K., and a Research Associate of Sidney Sussex College. His research interests are in the area of dynamical systems and control theory, with special emphasis on modelling and approximation of nonlinear systems and applications in computational neuroscience…

  • Game Changer Awards 2018

    Last Saturday, Game Changer Awards brought together bright, young innovators from Years 3 to 10 from across Perth and beyond in the hope of inspiring STEM in WA schools. At the event, the students got the chance to present and show off their creative STEM-powered solutions to real-world problems.On the day, several of our very own IET members joined other volunteers to help ensure tables were set up, teachers and students knew where to go, and the entire event ran as smoothly as possible. As a judge volunteer myself, I got to see the Year 3/4 STEM projects up close and was amazed at some of the ideas and creativity of their projects. It was especially interesting to see how they used the application of STEM in their proposed solutions. One project that stood out was an augmented walking stick…

    Things are always quiet on the STEM front during the Autumn term. I guess the children are finding their feet in their new year group and before they know it they are preparing for the Christmas activities. The schedule of events doesn't really seem to start picking up until the spring, once potential bad weather has passed. The Sussex Network are fairly active in their support of STEM events. Over the past few years we've attended about a dozen events each year, consisting of either STEM fairs, often referred to as 'Big Bang' or 'STEMFest', or workshops in schools. The Big Bang events attract groups of students from a variety of schools, spread throughout the day and are either local events ('Big Ban @ Somewhere' and 'STEMFest Elsewhere') or Big Bang South East, run over two days and attracting…

  • LAPC 2018!

    The Antennas and Propagation TPN attended LAPC 2018 last week in Burleigh Court, Loughborough, UK. The UK’s main antennas and propagation 2-day conference was another success with 150 delegates attending. The talks were divided into 2 antennas and 2 propagation sessions across the two days, looking at a variety of topics, including satellite communications and 5G. The poster sessions were busy with delegates getting the opportunity to talk to the authors and find out about their research in more depth.   • Translink NI Railways Adelaide Maintenance Facility Tour

    What does it take to keep Translink’s fleet of over 40 modern diesel trains on the tracks? What does it take to keep Translink’s fleet of over 40 modern diesel trains on the tracks? Well, on Wednesday 14 th November, a group from the IET Northern Ireland found out as they were welcomed into Translink’s £28M Maintenance Facility at Adelaide. Led by Richard Noble, Head of Rail Fleet Engineering at NI Railways, the group glimpsed inside the state of the art facilities that come to life each night to keep the wheels in motion on Translink’s Modern fleet of CAF 3000 and 4000 series DMUs. Built in 2012, the Adelaide facility has been designed exclusively for the maintenance of this fleet, and members were afforded a guided tour of all that is involved.   • North Yorkshire LN supports Engineering Extravaganza

    On 6th November North Yorkshire LN supported the Engineering Extravaganza at the National Stem Centre in York. The IET was one of four PEIs at the event again this year. The challenge set for the children from 4 schools was to design and test a parachute for a Mars Rover lander. The parachutes were made with simple materials and descents timed with a Microbit. The event generated a lot of interest and competition between teams, and great fun was had by all.

    So let’s think this through... You probably have multiple smart devices you interact with daily - they are only as good as the battery life of the device, so you need to plug in and charge up. The more things we plug in, the more electricity that is drawn. That’s fine for USB style devices (most IoT devices), but it seems like industry 4.0 is driving the use of technology beyond just smart entertainment. Car manufacturers are finally ready to team up with software houses to build the next electric vehicle within their traditional car plants, or some disruptors/challengers are ready to sell their white label solutions to car manufactures.     Sixty people attended the IET Coventry and Warwickshire Annual Dinner on Thursday, 15th. November, hosted by our Chair, Orla Murphy, twice winner of the Young Woman Engineer Of The Year Award and a senior engineer at Jaguar Land Rover.   Sixty people attended the IET Coventry and Warwickshire Annual Dinner on Thursday, 15th. November, a gourmet repast prepared by trainee chefs supported by first year students as waiters, etc. The evening was hosted by our Chair, Orla Murphy, twice winner of the Young Woman Engineer Of The Year Award and a senior engineer at Jaguar Land Rover.   • Another Enjoyable Local Lecture

    We held another Successful event at Wiltshire UTC on Tuesday which saw 48 attendees for The Practicalities of Implementing Autonomous Driving Cars Lecture by Ray Marshall from NXP. 90% of car accidents are a result of human error and with 1.3 million road traffic deaths each year, the race to self driving vehicles is on but with an incomprehensible amount of data processing (and therefore hardware) required, will the full level 5 of self driving be fully realised with a reasonable ECU size and acceptable power consumption by 2049?

  • Can You Solve Our Plastic Problem?

    We’re calling for students and young professionals to help solve the ever-growing issue of plastic pollution, as part of this year’s IET Global Challenge.  We’ve got a problem According to Greenpeace, “our oceans are slowly turning into a plastic soup”. Part of the problem is single-use plastic, which on a daily basis we use and throw away. It means huge amounts of plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down, are entering our oceans. A large proportion of plastic in our oceans is also due to “improperly disposed of rubbish, careless littering and accidental propagation by winds, drains and floods”, says environmental charity GreenSeas Trust.   Cigarette butts, for example, contain a form of plastic known as cellulose acetate.   • Present Around The World: “I Thought My Location Would Stop Me From Competing”

    When Nabeel moved to the USA, he wanted to participate in the IET’s presentation competition for students and young professionals, but couldn’t find a heat close to where he lived.  After a little investigation, he found that for the first time we were running an online heat.   This allows competitors to submit a video entry (rather than present at an event) in the first round of the competition.     Enjoy face-to-face events and seminars where you can interact, gather information and network. Attending these events makes it easier to express our views, emotions as well as exchange ideas by using our voice, body language. There is just some kind of energy that makes things more exciting. As we tend to spend a lot of time on our phones, in front of a computer, TV etc., it might be worth doing something outside of our comfort zone to fully appreciate the value of a real-time experience. However, as it is not always possible to attend a face-to-face event, many of them are streamed live online so you don’t even have to leave your home to participate.   • New Exhibition To Celebrate Women In Engineering Opens At IET London Savoy Place!

    The IET has launched an exciting new exhibition at Savoy Place, which aims to raise awareness and celebrate the achievements of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to inspire both current and future engineering and technology professionals. Located in the Watson Watt and Mountbatten rooms for the next 12 months, visitors can explore the posters and exhibits which feature women in engineering and their contribution to the field.
