  • MMC TPN: Raising awareness of the IET and how we can support their industry and careers.

    TV connect 2018 gave the MMC TPN a chance to show those in the Multimedia industries that there is a home for them at the IET. Read on to see how we used this oppurtunity to inspire and inform others. TV Connect 2018 ran over 3 days starting with an IET led workshop day on Content protection and  4k/UHD/high dynamic range  by Ian Nock and Graham Turner. This gave attendees the chance to see what IET volunteers do and the expertise that lies within the TPN.  For the Following two days the MMC had an exhibition stand at the TV Connect.     MiFID II (Finally a product that has a genuine feature for MiFID II) Rhys Lewis the Director of the NPL Quantum Metrology Institute leads the Time, Quantum & Electromagnetics (TQEM) Division gave a insightful discussion on how quantum technology is currently being used and its expected use in the near future.   • TV Connect is now in full swing!

    On Tuesday the MMC ran two workshops at Savoy Place for TV Connect delegates and today, the first of the two exhibition and conference days, we have been raising the IET and MMC profile at TV Connect.  We have a stand - B52, very easy to remember - so do please come and see us if you are at TV Connect.  Today Ian Nock, who ran one of the workshops, was a panel member during a 'Codec Wars' discussion session, and at lunchtime Ian, Bob Gentry and I set up a around table discussion, which for logistical reasons as much as anything was rather poorly attended.  However Rikki who has been running our stand has found there is a good degree of interest in the IET in general and the MMC in particular, so it will be interesting to see how much post show follow up we get.

    The Active and Passive RF Devices Seminar was held this year on 30th April 2018 in Savoy Place, London The delegates were treated to a full day of speakers discussing a wide variety of topics – if you were there, tell us what was the most interesting thing you learnt during the day! During the breaks we had a poster session and networking – it was great to see so many people discussing the posters with the presenters! The day ended on a high with presentation to Wenzhang Zhang for Best Student Paper! The prize was a laptop, kindly donated by Toshiba UK – well done Wenzhang!   • Cars, Cars And More Cars – Haven’t I Been Here Before?

    A few weeks ago, I experienced a case of deja vu at the Coventry Museum of Transport when I came across their pre-war collection of cars.  Preferring vintage cars (a Bugatti T35 over a Veyron any day for me!) I always seem to gravitate as if on remote control to these vehicles.  I realised of course that I’d been there the previous year when the ARTS TPN held their first ever seminar on ‘Electrification in Motorsports’.     An  Aviation Book Sale is to be held at the National Aerospace Library  at Farnborough  on Thursday May 24  2018, 10:30 – 4:30pm. Entry is free and a vailable for purchase on the day will be many  100s  of new / second-hand donated books  and  heaps  of aviation magazines - a  wide range of  aviation history books, autobiographies, biographies, histories of  individual  aircraft  types  /  aircraft companies,  old  journals,  books on the  history of  RAF, technical textbooks etc. - a sheer abundance of aviation titles.    Most of the books will be sold between £1.00 and  £5.00  and the magazines will be 25p each or 5 for a £1.00;  the  money raised from the sale of these  donated  books will be used towards the conservation of historic aviation material in the Library’s archives.  This year…

    I'm always fascintated to hear about our wonderful and diverse community members and how they came to be doing the job they do today, so, I thought I'd hand over this blog to David Leng .   David joined the platform in April 2016 and below he tells us more about himself. Looking back on my working life two things strike me: I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have always managed to get paid to do things that I would actually spend my own time doing; and secondly that being in the IET gives me a genuine sense of pride. Attending the Predictably Irrational, The Impact Of Relativity event organised by Harrow IET, David Chong from GSMA discussed the different ways of 'opting in and opting out' in numerous consent based scenarios. An interesting stat presented showed that more countries within the EU had a larger number of health donors than for example in the UK - the main difference? Persons are under the Opt Out framework. The session covered that human behaviours can be predicted to choose relative outcomes based off presented data - including how the decision making process can be tailored to a give a focused outcome. Whilst this is typically seen in UX Design efforts, the broader digital world is also going through an Opt In/Opt Out overhaul - namely, GDPR.     Although many people complete their studies first (whether it is a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree etc.) and then look for work experience opportunities or employment, some others do two things at the same time and go for extramural studies (or online learning) and work (sometimes even full time!) as well, with others completing sandwich programmes which offer industrial placements as part of the qualification, or even work based learning qualifications. Some people would even consider working and doing a PhD at the same time or they would simply focus on their doctoral research - on condition that they can afford it or get enough funding.
