  • IET Young Woman Engineer Of The Year 2020 Finalists Announced.

    Six young female engineers have been announced as this year’s YWE finalists Our 2020 finalists are: Shrouk El-Attar , an Electronics Engineer at Elvie. She engineers smart tech that improves the lives of cis women and trans men, whilst breaking down barriers and smashing taboos. Shrouk previously worked with surgeons operating on the eye, on IoT Tech at Intel and at Fujitsu in Kawasaki and did her master’s research in Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). Shrouk has been a STEM Ambassador since 2011, teaching children about engineering solutions and most recently headed up a project, teaching maths to children of refugees.   Denize Ivy Pilarta , an Apprentice Non-Destructive Examination Engineering Technician at BAE Systems Submarines. She is responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of submarines…

  • IBC Accelerator Showcase (IET Central London Network)

    Wed 14th October 2020. Usually, we'd bring together our colleagues from The Royal Television Society (RTS) and our local IET audience at our Savoy Place venue in the London for the annual review of news and exciting developments from the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) held in Amsterdam. Sadly this, and the IBC event itself, were not possible this year owing to Covid-19 health precautions. Undeterred, we opted for an on-line webinar to showcase the amazing projects that had progressed under the IBC Accelerator programme. After a warm welcome from Amanda Weaver (Director Professional Publishing and Learning, IET), the webinar was driven along by Mark Smith (Mark Smith Marketing) and Muki Kulhan (Chief Innovation Officer, Muki-International), the IBC Accelerator Innovation Leads.…

    I really enjoyed hosting Alex Zivanovic from Middlesex University last week. His passion on the works of Edward Inow~ er, never can pronounce his name, but it in no way detracts from the incredible animal-like kinetic art he has produced. Alex, like Edward, is enthusiastic about his work and the works of this artist, and his expertise in lecturing is evident in his friendly approach. My favourite part of the event was when we had a discussion about cybernetics, both in our respective lounges, and discussed the questions from the Q&A panel box.     In this fourth article we move on from talking about what structured data is to look at who owns it and who should control it. So far in this series of articles we have described what construction product data is , how it needs to be connected to standards , and how product comparison is a key example of how structuring your data is essential . Now we move on to the data itself – who owns it? Who should control it? Don’t forget to sign up to the zoom call in a week’s time (link at the foot of this post). Product Data is an Asset In 2006, Clive Humby , the mathematician who made a fortune helping Tesco develop its new Clubcard, said “ Data is the New Oil ”.   • Rhodri Edwards Wins IET Student Excellence Award For Qinetiq

    Every year, the local Dorset and South Wiltshire network sponsor a Student Excellence Prize at Qinetiq to recognise and celebrate individuals who stand out from their peers and have made noteworthy achievements during the course of their apprenticeship. The p rize consists of £250 + IET membership I am delighted to announce this years IET Student Excellence Prize for Qinetiq was presented to Rhodri Edwards during the virtual Early Careers Completion Celebration

    The IET team are excited to bring you a new version of Career Manager this month. The current version of Career Manager is now unavailable, but the new system will be available from 20 October. The current version of Career Manager is based on an outdated platform which means we can’t provide enhancements or improvements; so, to enable us to improve our members’ experience, it’s time for an update. This will enable us to improve the appearance and develop new functionality for users making it easier to plan and log CPD or apply for Professional Registration. The new system will have a cleaner look and feel, be more mobile responsive and provide the same Career Manager content in an improved and simplified lay out.     G'day all Hope you and your family are healthy and safe. Please join me in congratulating Warren McLuckie and Ikhwan Tiong @Kiat for being elected as CCAP committee member for the session 2020-2023. It consisted of 3 webinars and the event marked the 20th anniversary of our first IET AHT event. The AHT2020 event “How appropriate healthcare technologies contribute in a public health emergency” was held successfully on Friday 18 September 2020. It marked the 20th Anniversary of our first IET appropriate healthcare technologies (AHT) event. It was originally planned to have a 2-day physical conference and planning was well advanced.
