One of the key barriers to increasing diversity and inclusion in engineering is the lack of counter-typical role models to influence and inspire young people. Having a role model can influence one’s action and motivate people to strive to uncover their true potentials and overcome weaknesses. Calls for mental health support to Foothold, the charity supporting IET members and their families, increased by over 40% in the last six months of 2020. In response, Foothold has launched a mental wellbeing hub, accessible to everyone in the engineering community.In response to the growing need for mental health support, Foothold has launched an online platform , giving IET members and the entire engineering community access to clinically approved resources and techniques to support their mental wellbeing. As particle accelerators have become larger and more complex they require more and more professional engineers to deliver them, whether its intelligent control systems, high power cooling systems, nanometer alignment and stabilisation, ultra-high precision manufacturing or high gradient RF engineers are at the heart of cutting-edge accelerator technology development. The future of accelerators also looks likely to need engineers to move from the laboratory-based novel accelerators into operational facilities, with more skills in lasers, machine-learning, micromachining, FPGA’s, and high-temperature superconducting magnets being required. The 2020 Energy Whitepaper pointed out that the current rate of emissions could increase the global temperature to a devastating 3 degrees by 2100. The ten-points plan published by the government to tackle the situation puts Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) and Green Hydrogen technologies at the forefront. I can’t believe how quickly my time as IET President is flying by. When seeking to audit a project it helps to adopt a process thinking approach to the task. By this it is meant that there are inputs, the process stages themselves within a defined boundary, and process outputs. It is also important to be fully aware of the environment which surrounds the project (stakeholders, regulators, legislation, standards, codes of practice etc) and expectations thereof.
