  • The Aerospace Network Were Hot On The Wings Of HAPS

    “All air vehicles are limited by physics, some by imagination, all others by fuel”.  So said Chris Kelleher, inventor of Zephyr, the solar electric stratospheric unmanned aircraft that provides the airborne platform for the Airbus version of HAPS.Following relatively hot on the wings of their other visit to Farnborough to the AAIB, the Network organised another visit to Farnborough, this time to Airbus, where the company has recently opened the Chris Kelleher building, a production facility for Zephyr.   Three aircraft have been built so far, for the UK MOD as launch customer.  There were many visitors during the 2018 Farnborough air show, as the Kelleher building is a couple of minutes’ walk from the southern perimeter.  In fact, during the period of the air show , Zephyr S set both altitude…

  • North East Exhibition For Future Engineers

    Here are a few photos from the 2-day event which took place last week at the new beacon of Light building in Sunderland. The event attracted over 60 local engineering/technology exhibitors as well as over 2500 school children across the North East, promoting engineering as a career. Our stand was well attended which was exhibiting a working; rotating 3-D laser printed model jet engine with throttle control and condition monitoring sensors, an Arduino unit programmed to playback names typed in morse code and a working sterling engine and a large TV monitor showing engineering related videos. An unexpected visitor was Tony Roche, the new IMechE President to see at first hand an event involving the joint engineering institutions.

  • Midlands Power Group - Toby Norris Memorial Lecture - Journey To The Grid Edge

    On 4th October 2018, the IET Midlands Power Group hosted the annual Toby Norris Memorial Lecture at Austin Court.  We were delighted to welcome Ian Graves, CEO and Owner of Competitive Future Ltd and Past Chair of the MPG and Silan Celik, Project Development Engineer with National Grid who together delivered a thought provoking lecture entitled 'Journey to the Grid Edge' which brilliantly reflected the inimitable style of Professor Norris...."wonderfully interesting and curious".  Ian and Silan presented, to an audience of over 50 attendees, a perspective on how the electricity supply sector is having to react rapidly to the transformation from being 'big utility' led to being Customer and specialist SME driven.  The changes arising from the growth in commercial and domestic solar/battery technologies…

  • Understanding The Root Causes Of A Lack Of Diversity In Engineering

    We all know the theoretical benefits of a diverse engineering workforce. I say theoretical because we are not at a place when a majority of engineering companies sector can demonstrate the actuality of the statement. To understand why that's the case, I believe we need to understand the root causes of a lack of diversity and keep asking the "why" questions. Why is it that we don't have more people from all backgrounds, all colours, all ethnicities, all abilities in the engineering workforce? Why is it that when you look at the Boardroom of the majority (if not all) of UK engineering companies the view is very homogenous around the table?   Why is it that I struggle to name ten, no even five, CEOs of big engineering organisations who happen to be women, or Asian, or from the LGBTQ community…

    We are very pleased to announce that Shaun Atherton, (The Christie Hospital Manchester) will be giving the Keynote speech at the Annual Event this year, which will take place in Savoy Place .Shaun Atherton is a chartered engineer and is team leader in radiotherapy and clinical engineering at The Christie. He manages the engineering requirements across a number of disciplines specifically: external beam therapy at The Christie main site and satellites; brachytherapy; clinical engineering; proton beam therapy; and mechanical engineering. He has worked at the Christie for 24 years in various engineering roles, and on many projects.     Sam Smith, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, has been awarded the 2018 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student Prize. Sam Smith received his prize of £250 immediately after 4th September ceremony where he received his degree.  Andrew Dodd of the IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Committee handed over the cheque and a certificate summarising the reason for giving the prize to Sam.  Sam received the prize on the recommendations from his tutors, including Senior Lecturer Rafid Al-Khannak.  Sam had an excellent and consistently high standard of work throughout his studies and academic performance on his course “BSc (Hons) Computing and Web Development”, including his outstanding Project. As only around 11% of the UK engineering population are women, I feel I am part of a unique group of professionals.   Graduating in 2001 from the James Watt Engineering School at Glasgow University, I have always been keen to see how things work and figure out ways of making things better. I excelled in maths, science and art at school, so I knew I had a natural calling to pursue a STEM degree. Building, making, sketching and inventing was part of my everyday as a child.     Electric Motorcycle team Nova Racing at Assen 2018  Finally, after a few months of trying, a few weeks ago we managed to catch up with the 2017 Nova Racing team at the MotoE championship in Assen, The team were joint winners of the IET ARTS TPN MotoE prize of technical excellence during the 2017 season, along with Bath University Zero team. Floris Straver the 2017 team manager commented:   "We are so pleased that the hard work of Nova Electric Racing Team 08 (2017) resulted in the championship win, and now also is being awarded by the IET through the price for Technical Excellence.
