In honor of International Women's Day 2014, the IET Women's Network would like to invite you to join our crusade to promote women in Science,engineering,technology and maths (STEM). Just e-mail in a picture of yourself, holding a plaque that states: What field of STEM are you in?; What you do; (something interesting and enticing - example I write code for... or I work on...) Why you became an engineer?; The funniest thing that they have been told / asked about being a female engineer i.e - funny assumptions or reactions that you get when telling people you are in fact, an engineer; An inspirational message; Make it as colourful and as fun as you wish - get creative and draw images to accompany your slide; Your message can be a combination of all of the above or a selection of one or two. Spike Aerospace who are designing the S-512 supersonic jet says it plans to replace the cabin windows with thin display screens embedded in the wall of the fuselage. It will certainly make long haul flights more interesting, although those people who suffer from claustrophobia may find it stressful.
Founding members discuss the creation of the new on campus group and how it will help the university’s engineering students through lectures, workshops and networking opportunities. The Newcastle University IET on campus group was the idea of a PhD student Chris Spargo, after he chaired the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering’s Annual Research Conference, attended by the IET’s academic account manager, Victoria Critchlow and IET president Barry Brooks. The IET Sri Lanka Network eminently held its twentieth Annual Conference at Hotel Galadari on 12 th October, 2013. The conference focused on both theory and applications and provided a forum for the presentation of papers, and to foster interaction between persons from industry and the universities by covering topics related to Electrical, Electronic, Communications, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Manufacturing. Graham Lee (IET Australia Forum Chairman) was in attendance at the University of Sydney Electrical and Information Engineering School's annual Scholarship and Prizegiving Presentation on 17 May 2013 to celebrate the achievements of its outstanding students. The 2013 IET Student Prize for New South Wales was awarded to Laurence Rouesnel for outstanding achievements as an engineering student at the University of Sydney. Anne-Marie Imafidon argues that we need to think differently about role models. She believes we need to stop looking at them as superhuman and instead embrace their mistakes as well as their successes, their personal foibles as well as their strengths.
