  • Community Collaboration

    The Sussex Network’s interaction with the local community mainly revolves around our series of talks, our STEM activities and developing relationships with the local universities. Non-members attend our talks at two locations (north and south of the county), we meet children at STEM fairs, where we have an IET stand, and at workshops that we run in schools, and we give student prizes. Our collaboration is really only in the form of our members who sit on university Industrial Liaison Boards. But perhaps that is not community collaboration in the strictest sense. So a request from the Engineering UK Business Partnership Manager and Head of STEM Sussex to attend a discussion with a community group was intriguing, particularly since their interest was to promote the achievements of Dame Caroline…

  • Singapore Network: Attracting Young Minds!

    Attracting young minds! We were getting in touch with the students from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT@NYP), Singapore. One of our speakers, Mr Morgan Bonici gave an introduction to IET and Incorporated Engineer registration. Next, Dr Andrew Ng, who is also Associate Professor at SIT, shared his journey on Charted Engineer registration. Another speaker, Mr Richard Fong provided some insights on professional registration in engineering career. Lastly, Kai Xian, a member of IET Volunteering Engagement Board and Yi Sheng, On Campus Advisor Young Professionals Singapore shared the vibrancy of IET volunteering communities. We look forward to seeing everyone of them in the future events!

    "Don't wait for people to ask you about Cyber Security" discussed Raj Samani, chief scientist at McAfee, at the IET Eng Talk lecture held at IET Savoy Place in London. The NSCS are a good example of how the message of Cyber Security should be spread into all places of education, their Cyber First strategy allows school children to increase their knowledge on cyber security and also look to it as a professional career path.     ‘The Railway Electrification: Time for a policy reset?’ Evening lecture held by the IET Central London Network at the IET Savoy Place gave good debatable insights into how Government policies should now consider approaches like Electrification. The event was presented in collaboration with the Railway Association and the IMeche.   • MEMBERSHIP & ACCREDITATION DRIVE AT SCHOOL OF BUS. & COMP. SCIENCE (SBCS) TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

    A membership and accreditation forum was held n Tuesday April 16, 2019 with students of the School of Business and computer Science (SBCS), Mt. Hope. This forum sought to engage students to participate in the IET PATW competition held annually as well as to encourage them in the Global Challenge competition.Special emphasis was also the proposed formation of an On Campus Group at the educational facility. This forum also sought to educate these students about the IET Global standards as well as membership with the IET. The students were very eager and showed keen interest in being part of the IET as members. The IET Trinidad and Tobago Local Network (IET TT LN) look forward to working together with the SBCS to further the IET global initiatives.

    This year's theme is: 'Shaping the Future'Although not an IET initiative, the annual Learning at Work Week  provides an opportunity to promote work based learning and opportunities to work, so I thought I would write a blog about some of the opportunities available for informal learning as many of our members undertake work based learning rather than the more traditional training courses or lectures (although these do have a places in CPD, they're only 1/6 of the potential activities available).     The SoCal network volunteers exhibited at the City of STEM science festival on Saturday, April 6, at the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey, CA, as one of nearly 100 STEM exhibitors and hands-on activities from dozens of organizations around Southern California.  "City of STEM" is LA's largest celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and takes place for the entire month of April with a series of amazing events and awesome activities throughout Los Angeles County.  The community events highlight the ongoing importance that science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) have in the Los Angeles region.   • Midlands Power Group Student Poster Event 2019

    On March 27th we held the annual MPG Student Poster event where students from our local universities present their ongoing project work to a panel of judges. This year the event was hosted by Birmingham University - our sincere thanks go to Pietro Tricoli for organising the event in Student Link of the Gisbert Knapp Building of the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. We had 18 excellent posters presented with both post-grad and under-grad submissions from Aston, Birmingham, Coventry, Staffordshire and Warwick. As in previous years, all the posters and accompanying presentations were of a very high standard which made the judging decisions particularly challenging.   • Visit To Liberty Speciality Steels Aldwarke Melting Shop Rotherham On 11th April 2019

    The annual visit to Liberty Speciality Steels this year, was to their Aldwarke Melting Shop based in Rotherham. Steel melting production is now all based on this major site and has gone through some difficult times in recent years with the major upheavals in Tata but then the fortunate acquisition of this plant  and its associated site at Stocksbridge NW Sheffield being bought by the business magnate Sanjeep Gupta. Last year Prince Charles was invited to the site to restart 'T' furnace which had been mothballed for quite some years and is now back in full production along with their 'N' furnace. Both units are 'Electric Arc Furnaces' with around 200 MVA capacity split between them Andrew Douglass their Engineering Director gave a short presentation and then a tour of the plant was undertaken…

    IET SYLN were once again invited to the IMechE  Regional dinner held at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield Attending on behalf of the IET SYLN were the Immediate Past Chair, Alan Chater and the Young Professionals Chair, Layla Graham Around 170 invited guests enjoyed the evening with Denis Healy their Regional  Business Development Manager once again undertaking the Master of Ceremonies role for the evening Key note speakers were Tony Roche the current IMechE President, the Master Cutler Nick Cragg and the Regional Chairman Alan Bratton.     Another very successful event set up by Work-Wise and supported this year by over 90 exhibitors. Staged at the MAGNA Science & Adventure Centre in Rotherham again provides an excellent venue for this popular event attended by over 3000. Many schools in the SY region and beyond attend, making this a fantastic opportunity for schoolchildren to see first hand what Engineering and Manufacturing opportunities are out there. IET SYLN once again had a double stand and were able to exhibit a number of interesting activities alongside the opportunity to distribute a range of literature about the benefits of membership of the Institution and engineering in general.   • IET Trinidad and Tobago LN assists the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in achieving Accreditation programmes 2019

    It is with great pleasure to report that after the visit and discourses presented by the IET TT LN Executives ( Chairman David Drakes and Treasurer, Anthony Chadee) to the students and faculty members of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), the IET Panel has recommended that the UTT  programmes receive 5-year accreditation status.   The programmes presented for accreditation were: ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Mechanical Option ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Electrical Option ·          NETD Electrical/Electronic Engineering  ·          NETD Instrumentation Technician The IET Panel was extremely impressed with the quality of the programmes and hence will be recommending that the accreditation of  UTT programmes be backdated by 3 or 5 years. Great job and congratulations
