  • what's happening at IET Brunei LN

    Friday, 18th January 2019 –A total of 23 students from UTB on Campus visited Labi Coffee Farm, Brunei's only local source for coffee beans. The students were able to tour the 19-hectare farm and demonstrated how the beans are harvested and treated before they are sent to their processing facility. The coffee beans are exported to countries such as Vietnam, China, Japan, and even as far as Canada.   Friday, 25th January 2019 – A total of 14 On Campus students attended a training on how to tackle fear of public speaking (glossophobia) and delivering an effective presentation.   Sunday, 27th January 2019 – YPS Brunei LN organised a social gathering to strengthen bonds between YPS and on campus group.     Sunday, 17th March 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 8 participants competed in Present Around The World (PATW) 2019 Brunei Local Heat, organized by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Local Network last Sunday in Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).IET PATW Brunei Local Heat is an annual competition conducted by IET Brunei Local Network which provide a platform for youths between the age of 18 to 30 years old to present any Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topic. The presentation should be given in a 10 minutes duration followed by 5 minutes Question and Answer session from the judges and audiences.   • Solent Committee Sets Priorities For Fresh Activity

    Rebuilding our support for early career 'young professionals', strengthening our university links, learning from other networks and possibly supporting a future Hack Pompey event.   The local network committee met in February - one of typically around 3 meetings per year. Having reviewed how well we are delivering against our plans, much of the rest of the meeting was devoted to considering priorities for possible additional activity going forward.  Collectively, this was determined to be (in order of priority): Rebuilding a team focused on supporting early career 'young professionals'. Engaging with IET bursars and scholars at local universities and on accredited apprenticeship schemes (as part of strengthening higher education links).     The results of the IET Northumbria 2019 local universities' final year students' projects competitionThe local universities’ final year engineering projects competition took place on the 13th of March in the impressive new Building Sciences block of Newcastle University. The annual event which is sponsored by IET Northumbria drew a wide variety of entries from Northumbria, Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham universities. The projects detailed in the posters section of the event ranged from ‘Device Detection Using Machine Learning Techniques’ to ‘Metal oxide characterisation for high temperature transistors’.  In the presentations event the topics included ‘Development of a Signature Analyser Test System’ and an ‘An analysis of helicopter propulsion through Biomimicry’ All of the entries were…

  • Magnets, Brains And Currents.. Oh My ! (IET Central London Network Event)

    Professor Daniel Bulte Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford spoke at the "Modern Mesmerism: The history and future of medical magnetism in the brain" event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network. He gave a very entertaining talk on how Franz Mesmer was able to use magnetic energies and animal-magnetism to promote wellbeing in the Victorian age. From the talk, it sounded like the approach was genuinely ground breaking, in that, it probably created the first franchise model in the Victorian age where his theories even warranted a Royal commission which created one of the first ever peer review processes for clinical trials.     "The average proton does not know the difference when inside a submarine or human brain" is where his intrigue started explained Professor Daniel Bulte Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford at the "Modern Mesmerism: The history and future of medical magnetism in the brain" event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network – March 2019. Professor Bulte gave an engaging and entertaining account of how mesmerism prompted the creation of modern MRI scanners used in hospitals today. Professor explained how Franz Mesmer himself was fascinated with magnets and energy fields which led him to eventually franchise the Mesmeric Procedure where folk in the Victorian area, would want to gather and receive mesmeric treatments!!   • UKSEDS Space 2019 Lifts Off At Edinburgh!

    I recently attended the UKSEDS Space Conference up in Edinburgh on 2 March 2019.  It’s the first conference I’ve ever been to and I had a great time meeting all the other exhibitors, together with lots of amazing students. There was a lot of interest in the sponsored stand that the IET Satellite Systems & Applications Network organised and I was pleased that some of our wonderful volunteers were able to help out over the two days of the conference. I also managed to spend some time having a go in the simulator docking the Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station.  I was surprised that even with my slightly numb fingers I managed it first time and have the certificate to prove it.  That will be a great memento of an excellent conference.  I was just so disappointed to have to leave…

    I’m looking forward to our New Challenges in Tribology Conference coming up on 27-28 March 2019 in Birmingham.  We’ve a great programme of speakers over the two days and have just finished finalising our programme.   You can see further details here and how to register if you’ve not yet secured your place. Two of our speakers who’ve recently been confirmed are Professor Anne Neville, Director of the newly formed Institute of Functional Surfaces (iFS) which comprises 80 researchers.     I'm delighted to announce below, the speakers for our April event in Malaysia Dr. Tan Chee Pin (Edwin) is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. His research interest lies mainly in the use of observers to estimate states and faults in dynamic systems.     The   IET   Cyprus   Network   hosts its annual global   competition   for Young Professionals and Students within engineering to develop and showcase their presentation skills.   All you have to do is give a 10-minute presentation on an engineering or technology related subject, followed by a short question and answer session.   The participants should be between 18 – 30 years of age to enter and is open to both IET members and non-members.   There are prizes for the winners and the runner ups and certificates for all participants.   To enter you will need to write a short abstract (maximum 1 side of A4 page) describing the proposed subject of your paper; your talk can be about anything related to the field of technology or engineering. Bhd.   • Highlights From Antennas And Propagation For 5G And Beyond

    This brand new event took place at the end of February in Birmingham. With 5G a hot topic at the moment, the TPN wanted to provide a look at the work being done in this field. We had speakers coming from NPL, University of Birmingham and the University of Bradford, amongst many others. Communications were high on the list of topics being discussed with presenters from the University of Kent and NPL providing updates on what their institutions were doing.  Dr Matthew Higgins from the University of Warwick presented results from trials at the WMG Meridian Midlands Future Mobility CAV Testbed, adding a more practical element to proceedings.   • Chris Copplestone - Obituary

    For many years Chris supported the then IEE and the MFI by organising events not only in Baden-Württemberg, but all over Germany. I particularly remember him at the regular  Stammtisch  in Stuttgart's VfB Clubheim in the early 1990's. More recently, he was my contact when it came to sharing information on the IET Germany and the MFI websites. We specialise in cameras and components for the image processing market.   • Technical Visit To Bukit Panggal Power Station

    Saturday, 2 Mar 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan – The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Local Network has recently organized a technical visit to Bukit Panggal Power Station. The objectives of the visit are to observe the operation of the power station and to understand further how this power station generates electricity to the public especially to the Tutong District. A total of 14 IET Members and 3 non-IET members joined the technical visit. Upon arrival, the group was welcomed by the Head of Bukit Panggal Power Section, Muhd Syafiq bin Haji Badar.
