    The IET Northumbria Network would like to draw your attention to two forthcoming events that we will be sponsoring: International Conference for Students of Applied Engineering (ICSAE), 20-21 October 2016 at Newcastle University, heavily supported by our On Campus group. Prestige Higginson Lecture - "Simulating smoke for Hollywood" , 16 November 2016 at Durham University, delivered by guest speaker Rob Pieké, Head of Software at MPC, a world-leading visual effects studio in London. The Northumbria Local Network are currently finalising the event programme for the 2016-17 session. Talks this session will be looking at: Autonomous vehicles, SMart Meters, IEE Regulations amongst many other subjects.   • Speaker Highlight - Radio Propagation And Technologies For 5G

    We are delighted to share that Professor Hamid Aghvami FREng, FIEEE, FIET  will be a keynote speaker speaking at the  Radio Propagation andd Technologies for 5G .  Hamid Aghvami joined the academic staff at King’s in 1984. In 1989 he was promoted to Reader, and in 1993 was promoted Professor in Telecommunications Engineering. He was the Director of the Centre for Telecommunications Research at King’s from 1994 to 2014. Professor Aghvami carries out consulting work on Digital Radio Communications Systems for British and International companies; he has published over 550 technical journal and conference papers, and given invited talks and courses the world over on various aspects of Personal and Mobile Radio Communications.   • Totally Thames Festival - The Ladies Bridge (Waterloo Bridge)

  • Graduate engineers have some of the highest salaries according to new report

    It has been revealed that graduate engineering roles are among the highest earning jobs in the UK according to Glassdoor’s 2016 report. According to the report, graduate software engineers earn approximately £28,370 per annum, mechanical engineers earn £26,949, graduate engineers earn £26,500, civil engineers are at £25,000 and structural engineers earn circa £24,993. The top graduate salary in the report was a graduate analyst, whose salary is roughly £34,366 a year. Read more...

A pioneer in more ways than one, what does her legacy mean today and are things any different for today’s female engineering apprentices? Beatrice ‘Tilly’ Shilling crossed boundaries. A ground-breaking aeronautical engineer and successful motorcycle racer, she had known by the age of 15 that she wanted to be an engineer.
