Technical Visit: Backnang – Impressive Industrial History In Provincial Swabia

Michael Faraday Institution e.V.   Technical Visit: 24 th . September 2016   Backnang – Impressive industrial history in provincial Swabia   Germans generally regard Swabians as an industrious people, but you would be wrong to think that you have to visit Stuttgart to see examples of technical masterpieces. The town of Backnang lies around 30 km north-east of Stuttgart and can boast an impressive industrial legacy stretching back more than 150 years. But Backnang has more – it still has a strong connection with modern engineering and, in particular, with satellite technology. Why not join us for a technical visit that combines elements of both worlds? The German Centre for Satellite Communication Centre ( Deutsche s Zentrum für Satelliten-Kommunikation ) , or DeSK, maintains a showroom illustrating…

Streamlining of technical education to help plug skills gaps

A plan to declutter the UK’s system of technical education for over-16s has been revealed today with the aim of attracting more teenagers to technical careers in order to plug skills gaps. • Engineering students reject hard hat as symbol of their industry

Engineering students reject hard hat as symbol of their industry

Despite the fact that leading figures in the engineering community have called for the hard hat to be banned from promotional and educational material, it remains dominant, giving the wrong impression of the role according to Sainsbury Management Fellows' (SMF) 2016 Hard Hat Index. The Index was compiled by tracking the number of advertisements and articles that feature hard hats in 17 engineering publications from May 2015 to April 2016. Although this is the fourth year in a row that the data has been tracked, the use of hard hats in the engineering media is as high as the previous year's Index, with 257 images appearing in the 17 titles monitored over 12 months. This figure is the highest since the Index was launched in 2013. Read more...

The most promising innovation in Robots - IET Robotics & Mechatronics TPN Prize

At the TAROS 2016 conference, alongside the IET/TAROS public lecture  , the IET also sponsored a prize for " The most promising innovation in Robots ".  The award was presented to Paolo Angeles and here, Paolo tells us more about himself and winning the prize: Hello, my name is Paolo Angeles. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Imperial College London surrounding the quantification of Parkinson’s disease symptoms using sensors built at our lab, the Biomechatronics lab here in Imperial College London. I recently had a paper accepted at the TAROS 2016 conference to then present to the academic audience there. The paper involved a pilot study on healthy patients mimicking Parkinson’s disease symptoms wearing a prototype of a sensor system that I have designed to quantify these said symptoms. My…

Who Would Deliver Your Dream Engineering Talk?

A question that always seems to initiate a good discussion in the engineering community is what would make the ideal guest list for dinner. Obviously within an engineering and technology context… However, I can announce that the IET will not be branching out into hosting exclusive dinners for engineers. BUT we do host a Prestige Lecture Series that showcases the latest ideas and technologies within the engineering world.   These lectures cover many engineering disciplines, ranging from general interest to the more technical.   An example was the Turing Lecture given by Robert Schukai who is Head of Applied Innovation for Thomson Reuters. His talk called  ‘The Internet of Me: It’s all about my screens’ explored our future in a hyperconnected environment, and how our lives will seamlessly drift…

Food for thought - Formation of Company Policy

As many of the readers of our blog will know, I am quite interested and focused in research relative to the formation and execution of Company Strategy and also the methods used in defining company policy.  Whilst researching for a new paper I am writing I came across this not so amusing article.  It certainly makes one think and whilst the author posted it with the aim of it being an amusing, sadly it is all too true for many organisations......read on........ "Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the other monkeys with cold water. After a while, another monkey makes an attempt…
