  • BG TT Developing Employees

    BG TT Developing Employees

Both Gerald Mendes and myself had the honour to represent our Local Network in the second discussion with representatives of BG TT, Kathy Ann Baynes and Jason Look Yee.  As the Lead HR Advisor in Learning and Development, Kathy Ann provide us with a clear understanding of the BG group process in developing people into competent and successful members fo the BG family.  Their process focuses on the entire realm from STEM to Internships to Graduate Training Programme to Employment. Their current focus is on the work experience route vs the training route and this was an area in which our LN was asked to identify areas of collaborations and provision of resources to work with BG TT's development of their personnel.  This avenue was a perfect identification for the IET Professional Registration…

CANCELLED ==> Porsche Museum Visit (31st. Jan. 2015)

I am sorry to inform you that our visit to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, which was planned for the 3st. January, has been cancelled . The museum has told me that they are hosting a large event on this day and will therefore have to close earlier than usual, making a tour at 15:30 not really feasible. Given the late notice I decided not to accept an alternative start much earlier in the day. I had booked the tour in November and was only told yesterday of the "event" in the museum and its consequences. I am, needless to say, more than irritated by the museum's actions. For those of you who had registered I will inform each of you separately by mail in the next few days. At the moment I am unsure whether the event will be held on a different date. If you have an opinion on the matter please…

The Project Controls Network enjoys discussing key topics impacting society, so, for its 2014 Prestige Lecture, the network’s executive team decided to look at how the future of travel is set to change. The network invited key speakers to discuss how projects at the UK’s biggest airports will influence this, and the project control challenges they face. Aviation is a hot topic for people involved in project and programme delivery, as Preetam Heeramun, Project Control Network Executive Team Member, and the lead volunteer behind this event, highlights. “The travel industry is transforming rapidly and countries worldwide…

  • Foreign Added Tax

    Foreign Added Tax

The notion of Value Added Tax is known, well document and experienced by all. Its the percent that’s levied for the country.  Though somehow, the path to prosperity is slower or staggering regardless of investment of time energy and resource. Employees or authority figures that take on Foreign time zone calendars as their main source of income are peer'd against others who then have to follow suit, this may be progressive in thought, however any activity that effects the GMT zone that someone represents, should be treated differently, albeit Taxed differently - Foreign Added Tax. The mansion tax is said to apply to a select few only who are rebate friendly anyway. The proposition of a FAT would ensure that the foreign employers have the FAT applicable - as their interests are not really benefiting…

Don't Underestimate The Value Of Soft Skills

You will no doubt have seen the information about the high demand on engineering skills to meet the demand for Engineers in the Engineering UK's most recent report . However it's not only engineering skills that are required. As a recent BBC News Article explains research shows that soft skills, such as communication, interacting with customers or stakeholders and team working are worth £88bn to the UK economy. Soft skills are also an important part of the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC , where communication and management are included alongside technical knowledge and application when considering the professional registration of a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician. Despite this importance, it is often an area that gets overlooked when planning for continuing professional…

How Time Zones Like UTC Effect Quantitative Easing.

Surprisingly the UTC time zone plays a strong factor in local GMT Quantitative Easing efforts. Globalisation is now a presumed given, where fueling commercialisation activities for some managers have become a regular past time activity. The United Kingdom is always at the forefront of innovations and renowned for it. The GMT time zone for decades has been a place for international success, one of the main reasons London is a strong market for business. So much so that alien companies have an increasing foothold of FDI presence. Meetings are created, deals are made, strategies are created, goals are deployed all around the the UTC time zone. In fact, a work force buzzing about UTC business hours creates an ivory tower ready for solidification. As the critical mass employed ensures a streamlined…

Bloodhound SSC - A Grand Challenge 1000 mph

IET Prestige Lecture (joint with IMechE), 10-Dec-2014 This fascinating lecture for young, and not so young, Engineers held everyone enthralled as Tony Parraman (Head of the Project's sponsor liaison, a past teacher and a qualified engineer) sacrificed the Bloodhound Xmas dinner to take us through the history, current activities and future plans for the project: Not only driving faster than any man has ever driven, but also exceeding 1000 mph! The engineering adventure started with Richard Noble's first attempt in Thrust and moved on to Thrust 2 achieving over 300 mph, nearly taking off and setting a dubious record for the fastest sack of potatoes (in the passenger seat)! Then on to Thrust SSC, with Andy Green chosen as the driver (quite a few nutters also applied!). Breaking the Sound Barrier…

Book now for Bowers & Wilkins talk on 20th Jan

Bowers & Wilkins - John Bowers’s Vision and Legacy: Tuesday 20th January, 6:30pm, Uni. of Sussex, Falmer. I'm looking forward to this talk about the internationally recognised loud speaker manufacturer. When Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols was asked what his best ever purchase had been, he answered "a pair of B&W speakers". Also, December's issue of E&T Magazine included B&W headphones in the 'gadgets' section. John Dibb's talk will not only cover the history of B&W, but will also look at the technology of audio reproduction, including the use of digital signal processing in modern day devices. Doors open at 6.30pm for networking and refreshments, with the talk starting at 7pm. The event is free to attend and is open to both IET members and non-members. Register here today .
