  • Join the Discussion for a Net Zero Future

Join the Discussion for a Net Zero Future

Will you have your say on the role of renewables on the road to net zero and the innovations needed to overcome the blockers on the way? With the effects of climate change ever increasing, and the World Health Organisation calling it the ‘single biggest health threat facing humanity’, renewable power generation is key in getting us to net zero, but many challenges remain: scale-up, cost reduction and system operation with close to 100% renewables. As RPG 2022 features for the first time a specially selected invited speaker stream, industry leaders will be delivering an inspiring programme on how they are working to accelerate the growth of renewables and achieving ambitious carbon neutrality goals. We’d love it if you could join us as we welcome an exciting line-up of eminent speakers…

  • Do these things mean anything to you?

Do these things mean anything to you?

The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, and 1967? How about The Institution of Electrical Engineers, and 1968? Does it help if I mention the beach at Brighton? A pavilion, or a caravan? A name, perhaps? John Wilson? History is a cruel medium. Not only are we condemned to repeat it, but we also forget its lessons. We are consistently poor at recording it with fidelity, and especially without bias. A cynic might echo the same sentiments about broadcasting. Maybe, back in the 1960s, when colour television was new, when channels were few, when adverts were a novel innovation, then the idea of having an International Broadcasting Convention that would still be running more than 40 years later, would fit the global mood of change, of hope, of peace, of love. The passing of those intervening…

Engineering Extravaganza events - Yorkshire Region.

This event, now in its eighth year here in South Yorkshire, was delivered again on the 11th July at the Sheffield Hallam University and for the first time on the 7th July at the University of Hull covering the East Yorkshire region. The South Yorkshire event was a 'sell.out' in terms of a full capacity of schools attending with 163 schoolchildren taking part. The East Yorkshire event had 5 schools attending with around 60 schoolchildren taking part. We were delighted to have the East Yorks event for the first time at the University of Hull who were keen to accommodate this event and their help with facilitation, excellent. Zeta Potential Measurements in Polymer Research Webinar

Colleagues at Surface Ventures would like to welcome community members to join them on their next webinar. Zeta Potential Measurements in Polymer Research Dr Astrid Drechsler (Leibniz-Institut fur Polymerforschung Dresden e.V. Thursday 28 July 2022 1.00pm BST In many applications of polymer materials, as e.g. coatings, composites or as smart surfaces, the material properties or the adhesion to other substances are determined to a great amount by functional groups situated at the very surface. While contact angle measurements can reveal the polarity of a surface, the zeta potential (the electrical potential of a solid in contact to an aqueous solution) gives valuable information about its acid-base behaviour resulting from charged functional groups, the adsorption of ions and molecules…

  • Resilience – How can we enable it?

Resilience – How can we enable it?

The topic of resilience has become even more prominent in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, the IET’s Resilience Working Group has produced a short paper called ‘ Engineering a more resilient world ’, featuring the thoughts of engineers across sectors including from energy, digital, design and manufacturing. This thought leadership piece contains recommendations to government, the research, education and engineering communities that: Government should embed a whole system approach to resilience and resilience planning, Ambitious targets should be set for research into this area, and Resilience should become an integral part of the training engineers receive. Which measures has your organisation taken to improve its response and recovery to future shocks…
