What Are The Impacts Of COVID-19 On The Ability Of Engineers To Collaborate With Patients?

Discussing the ways COVID-19 has changed the culture of engaging with patients.  By Nury Moreira, IET Healthcare Sector Lead There is no set definition of a global pandemic, but there is a growing concern among doctors and healthcare practitioners that the world is amidst a COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the ongoing crisis, the world is experiencing unprecedented changes on what seems like a daily basis. In the last few months, doctors, researchers, and scientists from all fields of knowledge across the world have joined hands to tackle the COVID-19 crisis with a remarkable spirit of collaboration. Although the genetic structure of the corona virus was broken down within a few weeks of its discovery, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of both researchers and engineers.  Optical…

  • Quality Management In Support Of Projects - Some Thoughts When Auditing

Quality Management In Support Of Projects - Some Thoughts When Auditing

When seeking to audit a project it helps to adopt a process thinking approach to the task.  By this it is meant that there are inputs, the process stages themselves within a defined boundary, and process outputs.  It is also important to be fully aware of the environment which surrounds the project (stakeholders, regulators, legislation, standards, codes of practice etc) and expectations thereof.  This blog entry seeks to identify some of the dimensions of the above by way of offering thought prompts that the reader can take to reflect upon and identify key issues for their consideration. Auditing and process reviews occur in many guises.  In consideration of this, the author suggests that there are 10 types of Quality Audit that are commonly encountered.  These are: Design Control Audits …

Meet The Tribology Team - February Focus - Dr Marlon Cruz

My professional background is Metallurgical Engineer followed by a PhD focused on tribology and surface engineering. Before staring my professional career, I gained interesting experience as industrial electrician and around emergency services as volunteer firefighter. My career started back in 2000 after a 5-years engineering degree program. At the beginning I followed an academic pathway by working in a research lab and starting a PhD but my inquisitive desire to bring the academia closer to industry and vice versa was the beacon for next steps on professional development. On those times I had clear idea that my professional development would be around the fascinating world of materials engineering and science with focus on tribology and surface engineering. I have worked in three countries…

How Can Engineers And Technologists Involve Patients In The Design Process Of New Solutions For Healthcare?

Engineers and clinicians play a large role in developing new medical innovations, but what about the patient? We examine the benefits of having patient input in the design process and how this can and has been applied. The advancements in modern technology broke the rate at which we, humanity, are developing in the universe. One of the core applications of modern technology is in the medical field. Using rudimentary technology back in the 1900s, we were able to increase the average lifespan of every human being on the planet. Since then, numerous advancements have been made  to improve the health of millions of people.  As we continue to discover new techniques and quality machines, engineers have become a key part of the advancements in the medical field. Even though the medical field is growing…
