He started the lecture by explaining how from the starting point of computer graphics for single computer use, we are all now in a position where we have multiple digital devices that we expect to do multiple different things.     Joseph will present a snap shot of the engineering effort to design the new collider and some of the engineering, cost, and schedule challenges. Joseph Tuozzolo is the Technical System Division Head for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), Chief Mechanical Engineer for Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD), and the Level 2 Cost Account Manager for EIC Accelerator Systems.  During his 41 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he has been involved in the design, development, and installation of vacuum, magnet, and instrumentation systems for all of the accelerators in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider/C-AD complex.  Joseph was the BNL mechanical engineering lead for the Spallation Neutron Source project responsible for the accumulator ring and beam transfer lines.  Recently, he has been the…

    Vitor Cardoso, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, receiving the 2020 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Prize Vitor Cardoso, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, receiving the 2020 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Prize immediately after the deferred 2020 graduation ceremony in September 2021.  The IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Prize is a cash prize awarded annually to a graduate of the Bucks New University in High Wycombe.  Handing over the commemorative certificate to Vitor is Andrew Dodd, one of the committee members for the IET Local Network.   The 2020 prize was given in recognition of Vítor's excellent and consistently high standard of work during his studies, academic performance on his course, and Outstanding Performance in his Final Year project.  He was taking…

    Today's speaker highlight features Professor Rob EdgecockThe European Spallation Source (ESS) is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, and is one of the largest scientific infrastructure projects in the world. About 30% of the total construction cost is being supplied as in-kind contributions from more than 40 European partners, including the UK, and from others world-wide. This presentation will give an overview of the ESS and its purpose and describe the current construction status. It will also describe one of the UK in-kind contributions, the RF distribution system. This is now finished and is one of the largest in-kind contributions to complete so far.   • YHRN Regional Event covering the IET's 150th year Celebrations, held on the 22nd September 2021

    The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) recently celebrated their 150th anniversary. The Yorkshire and Humberside regional network made a series of presentations on Engineering in the region which was delivered online, however this was all recorded and can be accessed online through the IET.  Following several months of discussion and development, the YHRN pulled together four presentations to celebrate this significant milestone. Presentations were delivered by the North, South, West and Humberside Local Networks. West Yorks covered 'AI' by Professor Rami Qahwaji  from the University of Bradford;  Humberside covered the Decarbonisation work ongoing in the Humber area by Dr Geraint Evans.     "In an Operational Technology environment, JML processes are different compared to a regular operations" explained Alistair Macrae, ICS Cyber Security Consultant at Claroty during the 'Securing remote access to operational technology (OT)' webinar organised by the E&T Webinar Team. He explained that in an OT environment, role-based access controls are time bound and solutions need to be able to keep up swiftly to changing access requests. Dr. Francis Lockwood Estrin is a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant working as part of the University of Liverpool and part ASTeC in Daresbury Laboratory. His role is to research the A-Symmetrical HiPIMS and its application for superconducting thin films, this is split between work In Daresbury producing thin films and work at Liverpool investigating the plasma conditions. Prior to this Francis worked at QinetiQ on Ion Thrusters a space propulsion technology.     YouTube STEM sensation Mark Rober has become the newest IET Honorary Fellow for his outstanding contribution to aerospace engineering.Mark is an American YouTuber, engineer and inventor. He is known for his YouTube videos on popular science and do-it-yourself gadgets and has over 18 million subscribers. Before YouTube, Mark was an engineer with NASA for nine years where he worked on the Curiosity rover at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mark also worked for Apple in their Special Projects Group undertaking Product Design as Mechanical Engineer. He recently received the IET’s STEM Personality of the Year award in a worldwide competition that celebrates an inspiring individual who is changing the narrative on what it really means to be an engineer or technologist.
