    This year's theme is: 'Shaping the Future'Although not an IET initiative, the annual Learning at Work Week  provides an opportunity to promote work based learning and opportunities to work, so I thought I would write a blog about some of the opportunities available for informal learning as many of our members undertake work based learning rather than the more traditional training courses or lectures (although these do have a places in CPD, they're only 1/6 of the potential activities available).     Midlands Power Group Student Poster Event 2019

    On March 27th we held the annual MPG Student Poster event where students from our local universities present their ongoing project work to a panel of judges. This year the event was hosted by Birmingham University - our sincere thanks go to Pietro Tricoli for organising the event in Student Link of the Gisbert Knapp Building of the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. We had 18 excellent posters presented with both post-grad and under-grad submissions from Aston, Birmingham, Coventry, Staffordshire and Warwick. As in previous years, all the posters and accompanying presentations were of a very high standard which made the judging decisions particularly challenging.     Visit To Liberty Speciality Steels Aldwarke Melting Shop Rotherham On 11th April 2019

    The annual visit to Liberty Speciality Steels this year, was to their Aldwarke Melting Shop based in Rotherham. Steel melting production is now all based on this major site and has gone through some difficult times in recent years with the major upheavals in Tata but then the fortunate acquisition of this plant  and its associated site at Stocksbridge NW Sheffield being bought by the business magnate Sanjeep Gupta. Last year Prince Charles was invited to the site to restart 'T' furnace which had been mothballed for quite some years and is now back in full production along with their 'N' furnace. Both units are 'Electric Arc Furnaces' with around 200 MVA capacity split between them Andrew Douglass their Engineering Director gave a short presentation and then a tour of the plant was undertaken…

    Another very successful event set up by Work-Wise and supported this year by over 90 exhibitors. Staged at the MAGNA Science & Adventure Centre in Rotherham again provides an excellent venue for this popular event attended by over 3000. Many schools in the SY region and beyond attend, making this a fantastic opportunity for schoolchildren to see first hand what Engineering and Manufacturing opportunities are out there.     IET Trinidad and Tobago LN assists the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in achieving Accreditation programmes 2019

    It is with great pleasure to report that after the visit and discourses presented by the IET TT LN Executives ( Chairman David Drakes and Treasurer, Anthony Chadee) to the students and faculty members of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), the IET Panel has recommended that the UTT  programmes receive 5-year accreditation status.   The programmes presented for accreditation were: ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Mechanical Option ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Electrical Option ·          NETD Electrical/Electronic Engineering  ·          NETD Instrumentation Technician The IET Panel was extremely impressed with the quality of the programmes and hence will be recommending that the accreditation of  UTT programmes be backdated by 3 or 5 years.     On March 20 th , The Chairman, David and Treasurer visited the UTT, Point Lisas Campus, at the invitation of Dr. Curtis Boodoo, who,  requested that  the IET LN  assist with the formation of an On Campus Network at the UTT. On this visit, presentations were made to both students and members of the UTT faculty outlining a brief overview of the IET and its many benefits. They spoke in particular about the formation of the On Campus Network, and the office holders required for the formation of the Network.   Eng.     2019 Bio-Buddy Event, Held At University Of Ottawa

    The IET Local Network sponsored, and helped judge the first Bio-Buddy design competition which was held as part of the University of Ottawa Design DayOn a sunny but cool Friday morning three teams of undergraduates from Ottawa University presented their Design Reports and Entries for the first Bio-Buddy event. Each team signed up to design and prototype a semi realistic infant child mannequin, under the age of 12 months, that is intended to improve CPR training by providing a more realistic experience for CPR training courses attendees. The competition was framed by a detailed specification and a set of evaluation criteria.     IET-PBOC Charity Event 2019

    Friday, 5th April 2019, Kuala Belait - IET Politeknik Brunei On Campus (IET-PBOC) organised a charity event for special needs students at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Kuala Belait.The event is conducted to give opportunity for volunteers, consisted of students from Politeknik Brunei and Universiti Teknologi Brunei, to contribute to the society. Simultaneously, the volunteers were given first hand experience to interact with special needs students and formed friendship bonds with them. The charity event began with the welcoming speech by Pusat Ehsan staffs followed by activities to enhance the creativity of Pusat Ehsan students such as Cupcake Decoration, Hand Painting and Indoor Gardening. At the end of the activity, gifts are presented by IET-PBOC to Pusat Ehsan students.
