An interesting day out. After less than 2 minutes’ instruction I was in charge of an 8 car Desiro train doing 100mph! OK, maybe I overshot the station by 4 car lengths, but I didn’t go through any red signals! My fellow drivers had it worse though, in a very short space of time they had cracked windscreens, road vehicle incursions, driving rain, thick fog and heavy snow. No, this wasn’t a typical autumn day but a very enjoyable day spent at the Basingstoke Campus a joint venture between South West Trains and Network Rail to train operating staff (drivers, guards etc.) as well as maintainers. We were initially given an overview of the centre by Mark Ellis then Brian Kimber (both of South West Trains) gave us a very detailed and illuminating presentation on not only what they (South West…

Having recently attended the Venturefest Scotland 2016 event and attending the Digital session on ‘How to understand future digital trends – cybersecurity’ I was interested to find more out about what was available in Scotland to help in the Cyber area. Firstly, the Venturefest Network draws local innovation eco-systems together through a number of local events around the country, working closely with Innovate UK (Technology Strategy Board), the Knowledge Transfer Network and other national partners to strengthen connectivity between these innovators, investors and entrepreneurs. How to understand future digital trends – cybersecurity This workshop invites delegate to hear about the latest trends in cybersecurity from the Cyber Academy at Edinburgh Napier University and Scottish SME’s who have…
So, September has been and gone, and as October brings the start of the 2016-17 session, I thought I would take a little time to reflect on our recent activities and highlight some of our successess. We have had some absolutely amazing events this year and I'm very proud to have been involved with each of them, working with our fantastic volunteers and staff colleagues. We have collaborated with UKRAS Network, Imperial Hackspace, KTN to name but a few. Our speakers have come from far and wide and so have our delegates. If you visit our blog pages you will see a number of reports on our past events, including two hackathons, a robot start up day, our IET/TAROS public lecture, and our International Robotics Day held in Savoy Place in July. We also participated in a joint event with our…
We know that many of our members are time poor and that your diaries book up quickly with work, family or other commitments taking up your time. With this in mind, all of our dates for professional development training for 2017 are available online allowing you plenty of time to view the courses that may be of interest and book in early. Welcome to the 2016-17 session which commences with the Network’s event in support of World Space Week. We’ve two excellent speakers in Vanessa Lawrence and Ralph Cordey presenting on Remote Sensing satellite Systems for Global Sustainability on 10 October 2016 in London. There’s still time to register for this event. The Network have also just finished judging the Game Changing Satellite Applications poster competition. Congratulations to the winner Paul Iliffe, who receives a free place to attend the Reinventing Space Conference later this month, courtesy of the conference organisers. Following on from the excellent event on the Rosetta Spacecraft which we organised earlier in the summer with the Aerospace and Robotics & Mechatronics Networks, we managed to persuade the speakers…
I'd like to welcome all Aerospace community members to the start of the 2016-17 session which continues under the leadership of David Lindley, Executive Team Chairman and Lee Murton, Young Professionals Group Chairman. I’m looking forward to the first two events of the session Addressing Ageing Aircraft Sustainment Issues - The Use of New Technology and Techniques seminar in London on 26 October 2016. The TPN have organised some excellent speakers covering the latest technologies and new challenges in this field, so this should be a great event. Following on there is the Winning Concurrent Product Development evening seminar up at Rolls Royce in Derby. Following on from the excellent event we had on the Rosetta Spacecraft earlier in the summer, we managed to persuade the speakers to share…
IET Control and Automation TPN is supporting the IChemE Advances 2017 conference. IET Members will be offered a reduced rate. 2-14 June 2017, Birmingham, UK New challenges, new technologies, new solutions Call for papers now open The discipline of process control and automation has seen many changes over the years, with the advent of new technologies, industrial practices and legislation. Today we recognise those changes as all being components of the industrial internet of things (IIoT). Whilst much attention and energy is being paid to the underpinning technologies, the more interesting and challenging question is how the process industries will change and what the role of automation will become. Many commentators talk about being on the verge of a fourth industrial revolution – a change…

It's that time of the year again, the start of a new session, but before introducing you to our new Chairman for 2016-17, I'd like to take a brief moment to look back at our flagship event that took place in March. I've already blogged about it so the details have been shared, but as it was such a fantastic event, and happened largely as a result of our past Chairman, Ronaldo, and our incoming Chairman Ian, (more of whom below), it is worth looking back. The event, Advanced Manufacturing And Functional Materials , was attended by over 60 people. We heard from a variety of fascinating speakers, including, Paul Wiper, Keith Robson, Takahiro Hiramatsu, Jing Yang and Chaoying Wan. Not forgetting, of course, Chairman for the day, the very active local MP, Chris White. As many will know, Chris…

On 28th October 2016, the Wales North Local Netwrk hosted a lecture at Coleg Cambria, "Third Ammendment to BS7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations". The event was in two parts, around forty students in the afternoon and ten members in the evening. Our speakers were Mark Coles and Linden Smith from the IET and in the evening the event ended with a lively Q&A session. Many thanks to Mark and Linden for providing us with a most enjoyable day.
Once again, the Wales North Local Network was pleased to award the annual prize for "Engineering Excellence" to a student at Coleg Menai. This year, our winner was Nia Povey Jones who was nominated for her achievements in "Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair". We wish Nia all the best in her future endeavors, the event took place at "The Celtic Royal Hotel" in Caernarfon on the 13th September and was attended by around forty students, their families and college staff.
1.Expensive and Laborious – A common two word association before security/cyber audits. 2.Cyber Ready – A common two word association after a compromise. It is likely reading Cyber Ready evoked a sense of confidence, stability and a calm alertness (just like the hit you’re meant to get after drinking matcha green tea ... apparently). To be Cyber Ready you need to know what responses will be required to protect your core network. SIEM solutions have immensely clarified how data will be normalised and correlated to create a matcha-like alert across different components of your network Without a SIEM solution you are dependant on your Security Roadmap spread sheet – you know.. the one that has your organisational RAID logged against it for each product deployed – so you know what compensatory…
Model Satellites and Historical Machines In Perfect Working Order In IET Germany’s first event after the summer break a group of interested members, family and friends was able to enjoy two fascinating technical tours in my adopted home town of Backnang. With its timber-framed houses and landmark medieval tower Backnang might give the impression that it slept through the industrial revolution. But for engineers interested in the history of technology it is worth taking a closer look: an impressive museum, the Technikforum , shows how four industries have made their mark on the town and, even today, roadside signs proudly proclaim Backnang to be a centre of satellite technology. Nothing illustrates this better than the DeSK Showroom , set up in Backnang by a lobby group of companies from the…
