Samantha Grathoff is a lab coordinator, community engagement liaison, and adjunct lecturer for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in UM-Flint’s College of Arts & Sciences. She’s also one of the directors of the Curiosity Academy: a community club that engages middle school girls, mostly 6th to 8th graders, who have an interest in STEM subjects. The Academy aims to reignite the girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math at an age when they may be moving away from such disciplines. Through fun projects and activities, the students are connected to educators and professionals in various STEM fields. Now, what if more of those mini-figures could represent women in leadership and scientific roles? This is something Maia Weinstock wants to make happen. Many women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) have faced a common experience at some point during their college days -- they walked into a classroom and found that they were among a small handful of women in the class, or even the only one. That kind of experience has the potential to make a talented, motivated student feel out-of-place, and compel her to search for more inclusive academic environments, according to Nilanjana Dasgupta, a psychology researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It seems like everyone in the industry is trying to be at the forefront of the driverless car technology, but in Singapore, you can in fact hop into a driverless taxi and go for a ride. And it's even free. Is it really driverless - no, not at the test stage. There is still a driver in the front, but the cars are doing the driving themselves, and the driver is only there to monitor the performance and as a backup in case something goes wrong. It is still very much in the trial stage, only covering a 2.6 sq mile (4 sq km) area and it is by invitation only to book, but they are on the road with Uber planning a similar launch in Pittsburgh in the US in a few weeks time. The ISA Working Group, a collaborative group working under the IET, IMechE, BCS and SaRS, has produced new guidance on planning the assessment of a safety case or similar safety assessment document. The new material supports the groups previous guidance on procurement of Independent Safety Assurance services, and is intended to be used by anyone who needs to make a judgement on the adequacy of a safety case, whether independently or otherwise. As a female chemical engineer, Frances Arnold was already a rarity. After all, only about 16 percent of chemical engineers are women. But now that she has become the first woman ever to win the prestigious Millennium Technology Prize — it was awarded in Helsinki, Finland, on May 24 — Arnold is truly one of a kind. And she knows that in addition to a big cash award (1 million euros, or about $1.3 million), the prize brings an opportunity to spotlight the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers and to be a role model for other women. An impressive range of apprentice skills and achievements were celebrated with the support of the Gloucestershire Local Network recently at the Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET) Presentation Evening. Held at Cheltenham Ladies College on Friday 5 th August, apprentices from a variety of courses were joined by family and local dignitaries to celebrate their achievements on their respective engineering and technology programmes. The audience also heard from Lucy Ackland, who won the WES prize at the IET’s Young Woman Engineer Award in 2014, who told of her journey to becoming an engineer – including how her maths teacher told her to go straight to university rather than apply for an apprenticeship. Lucy joined Renishaw as an apprentice at 16 before being awarded a 1 st class honours degree…

The IET Northumbria Network , Retired Members Section - 'Continuing with Engineering and Life after Retirement' The new session will start next month and we have a full programme of events for our members. These are usually held at Westerhope Methodist Church Hall and are accompanied by a buffet lunch. Starting time is noon, followed by the lecture from about 13:15.
