Engineering taster day at Swansea University

Would you be able to spare a morning, afternoon, or whole day, to help out at an Engineering Taster Day on Thursday 7th July? Venue: School of Engineering, Swansea University, School of Engineering, Fabian way, Skewen, SA1 8EN Time: Full day is 8.00am to 3.30pm. People that want to do morning only or afternoon only are welcome. Morning session will be 8.00 am to 12.00pm, afternoon session will be 12.00pm to 3.30pm Sort of thing you will be doing: Volunteers will help pupils build a straw pylon subject to wind load, a motorised car and a self-propelling boat. In addition they will answer questions that may arise during the question and answer session. The aim of the taster session is to inform year 9 and 10 pupils about the different options available within Engineering and possible routes…

Present Around the World (PATW) 2016

The local heats of the Present Around The World (PATW) contest was held on Saturday 04th June 2016 in the Lecture room at Pro-Five Consulting Ltd, Ebène. Some sixteen (16) participants registered for the competition during which we discovered a whole array of interesting presentations and projects as well as eloquent presenters. On behalf of the IET Local Network, I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of the participants. We are pleased to inform you that the Winner for the PATW 2016 for the Mauritius Local Network is Mr. Sandesh Mihdidin for his presentation on "Assessing the sustainability of fuel ethanol production in Mauritius". He will be representing Mauritius at the Regional Finals in Barcelona by end of July 2016. He also receives a cash prize of £150 and a winner certificate…

Future engineering leaders win Academy awards

Five young engineers who have made a major impact in their respective fields very early in their careers will each receive a prestigious award this week at the Royal Academy of Engineering Awards Dinner at the Tower of London on Thursday 23 June. Volunteers Wanted For STEM Week As Part Of The Scottish International Airshow

Are you interested in becoming involved in the first ever Scottish International Airshow STEM Week? This event is on from Monday 29 August until Friday 2nd September and is open to schools from across the west and central Scotland and the IET are hoping to host a Career Stand in the Careers Zone and we are looking for members who will engage with the pupils to discuss careers / options / routes into engineering and personal careers observations. We Are The "Most Operationally Excellent Network"

A Tour Of The World’s First And Brightest Hard X-ray Laser

On Wednesday June 22nd, IET NorCal members and guests had a fantastic tour of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Linac Coherent Light Source ( LCLS ). The group was given an initial 40 minute presentation by Dr Mike Dunne describing the history of SLAC and the introduction in 2009 of LCLS. The initial development of SLAC required some novel thinking and a significant leap in the physics of the day in order to make the accelerator a reality. This included the construction of a freeway bridge over the accelerator for the future I280! A view of SLAC from the air with a bridge waiting for a freeway to be built! Since its 2009 launch, LCLS has drawn researchers in a wide array of scientific fields from around the globe to explore the innermost workings and properties of common and exotic materials…

Aero Space Kinross Centre

Aero Space Kinross is a new venture planned to provide an educational and visitor centre with a focus on all aspects of aerospace located centrally in Scotland. ASK is intended to fill an educational gap in an entertaining way and is closely linked with the local community and local schools. The centre will be staffed by a young post-graduate crew who will enable access to the application of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) of flight, astronomy and space exploration. On 19 May 2016 the IET Healthcare Technologies TPN and the Telemedicine and eHealth section of the RSM held a fantastic joint one day seminar on the future of medicine. Appeal For More Female Engineers To Have Their Work Published

On National Women in Engineering Day 2016, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for more female engineers to capitalise on their knowledge and expertise by having their work published in its world-renowned publications and information services. The IET publishes a range of widely respected publications and information services for engineers and technicians, and is making the appeal due to the worryingly low number of female engineers contributing to its publications. For example, only 1% of the 800 editorial board members serving across the IET’s journal portfolio are female. Read more...
