  • AP Communities Volunteer Conference - Faraday Challenge

At the recent Asia Pacific Communities Volunteer Conference we were lucky enough to have a presentation on the Faraday Challenge in Brunei, given by Huijin Onn.  The work the Brunei Local Network has been doing with this is truly impressive.  Even better, the ever-amazing Leon Ha videoed the presentation so I'm able to share it here with you.  I've also attached the slide set if you'd prefer to look through that . If you didn't join us in Auckland, I encourage you to take a look, and maybe get some inspiration!

  • BLUE WHALE – A DEADLY THREAT TO TEENAGERS

Due to easier access and lack of awareness among the parents, the internet is becoming lot more dangerous place than we can imagine. Each day, we get introduced to new threats online. The latest one is called the "Blue Whale Challenge%u201F which led to hundreds of suicides all around the world. This "game%u201F is designed by a Russian university-expelled psychologist with a motive to "clean up the world".  In this App, there are two types of people: curators/administrators, and players. Players – those who want to play the game are given each task each day. It starts from less-weird things like waking up 4:20 in the morning to self-harm like cutting a wrist and scratching your legs to draw whale on it. To keep the interest of the players in the game, curators ask them to listen to the music…

  • What's In Your Wardrobe???

Wow, you may say - that's a very personal question. To be honest I'm not interested in how many pairs of underwear you have, or which dress is your favourite... What I am interested in is whether you have any wearable technology in your wardrobe. You may be asking what is wearable technology? According to Wikipedia it's "smart electronic devices (electronic device with microcontrollers) that can be worn on the body as implants or accessories". So everyday examples are items like FitBits, Apple Watches and SnapChat Spectacles.  The market for wearable tech only seems to be getting bigger. According to an article in Forbes last year : 1. The wearables market exceeded $2 billion in 2015, will hit almost 3 billion this year and over 4 billion in 2017. 2. Just under 50 million wearable devices were…

  • Humans Of The IET YP - Israa Elsayed

Last week we met  Simon , the incumbent IET YP secretary. This week I'd like to introduce  Israa Elsayed , another member of the executive, our  Chairperson . Israa is a Chemical/Process Engineer at Woodside who joined the IET to develop herself and to help others develop whilst giving back to the engineering community. Why did you join the Committee? Peta asked me to; how could I say no. I get the feeling not many could. Dogs or cats (or Ducks? Naked mole rats?)? Neither. Sorry, not an animal person What is your guilty pleasure? CHOCOLATE!!! Enough said. What is the nerdiest thing you do?  This I get the feeling a bunch of you are coordinating answers. If you were a sandwich, what would you be? I wouldn't be a sandwich, I'd rather be something tasty, like a kebab. What are your aspirations…

  • Reflections From An IET Volunteer On FY'17 SoCal LN Community Activities

As we come to the end of our fiscal year, we thought it would be interesting to summarize and reflect on some of the events and volunteer activites we've been involved with as IET volunteers  for the Southern California Local Network (LN).     As a SoCal Community volunteer for the IET's SoCal Local Network, I was lucky enough to to be nominated to attend the Americas' Community Volunteers Conference - 2017, to represent the SoCal LN organizing committee . This volunteer conference is organized by the Communities Committee - Americas ( CC-A ), and funded by the Communities Resourcing Committee ( CRC ) .  So in late August, I found myself on a plane flying across the U.S. to Orlando, Florida to the Disney Coronado Springs Resort.  Volunteers from the CC-A and many of the IET communities, active…

  • HOW TO GET A GOOD GPA

The GPA is Grade Point Average. But, for a student it should be Good Positive Attitude towards learning. Securing high GPA is like a rat race. Most of the students start this race from the very first day at university. Whenever, someone starts this race the only desired thing is good GPA. At the end, a few ones remain successful but many not. In actual, there are many factors which play their vital role just to make GPA good enough or bad enough. In parallel, there are many problems which may derail the academic life of a student as well. One is to seek out the problems on its own in order to be less problematic person. Above all, smartness & persistence matter a lot. In semester system, time frame to cover the essentials of a subject is too short. You don’t have so much time to think when…

  • The Season Ahead, IET Swindon Network

The IET Swindon Network kicked off this season’s lecture series with a talk from Dr. Hamid Falaki, our very own Events Manager, with a presentation entitled "5G - Overview & Opportunities". This was also my first opportunity to introduce a speaker in my new role as Chair of our Network. I’ve recently taken over from Ray Lewington, who I’m sure many of you will know very well and will agree that he has done an excellent job.  I’m also very pleased that he has agreed to continue to actively support the Network where his involvement will be invaluable. My sincere thanks to him. Along with Ray and Hamid, we have an excellent team of volunteers supporting the Network. Robert McLaughlan is our Schools Liaison Officer & Professional Registration Advisor. He has been instrumental in our successful…

  • Technical Visit Report: S21 - Stuttgart's New Main Station

A report on IET Germany's visit to the building site On Saturday the 23rd. of September 2017 a group of IET members, friends and their families met up for a tour of the main building site for Stuttgart's Hauptbahnhof. This is part of the massive Stuttgart - Ulm Rail Project which, in turn, belongs to the Main Line for Europe (Magistrale für Europa / Magistrale européenne) between Paris and Bratislava, originally suggested by the EU in the 1990's. In Stuttgart the main station will be rebuilt underground and transformed from a terminus to a through-station, thereby freeing a large area of inner-city land for new buildings - primarily housing.  The project was fiercely opposed by many people due to the costs involved, the technical difficulties of building in Stuttgart's unique valley location…

  • Doing Things Differently To Build On Success

Most people find it difficult to embrace change, and engineers volunteering to help run a local network are no exception. However, the world is changing around us and we need to run just to keep up. On the other hand, there are some things associated with the Sussex Local Network that we don’t want to change, at least for the time being, because they work well and seem to be appreciated by our members. One of the consequences of being a little ‘stagnant’ is that our Younger Professionals section has essentially disappeared. But our programme of technical talks, amounting to 16 across the last academic year, on a wide range of topics, has continued to be a great success. Also, in spite of loosing our Schools Liaison Officer, we have managed to keep our schools events ‘ticking over’, with 12…
