CEng Registration

Dear All,

I am applying CEng Registration and I need clarification on the following issues

(1) I can't find a PRA from my designated area, is it ok if I approach one from another region?

(2) I have and B.Eng. and two MSc. degrees-How do I know my school is accredited, is there a list for accredited institutions?
(3) I have a number of publication in my Company’s monthly bulletin-Does this count as part of published documents or it has to be in a recognized Engineering journal?
(4) How do I use the Career manager to generate a development action plan? I have circled round this severally without headway
(5) How do I generate an Assessment Summary Report? Is there a link to this or do I have to write by myself?

  • (1) I can't find a PRA from my designated area, is it ok if I approach one from another region?

    Yes, that's fine.

    (2) I have and B.Eng. and two MSc. degrees-How do I know my school is accredited, is there a list for accredited institutions?
    https://www.engc.org.uk/education-skills/course-search/

But read the other recent threads on this topic in this forum - with those qualifications (assuming they are from reputable universities) it won't matter much if the course is accredited or not, it shouldn't cause any problems in your application. Note that it is the course that is accredited, not the college.

    (3) I have a number of publication in my Company’s monthly bulletin-Does this count as part of published documents or it has to be in a recognized Engineering journal?

This is where you need to talk to a PRA! Usually publications are not an important part of your application - most applicants I see do not have any publications at all - but it depends on your particular application. It's only part of showing that you understand your subject and you know how to communicate it.

    (4) How do I use the Career manager to generate a development action plan? I have circled round this severally without headway

I can't work this out either. You may decide just to write a DAP outside Career Manager, you don't have to use it. Maybe someone else here can explain how this works...I can see how to get CPD planning activities into Career Manager but I can't see how to get them out again!

    (5) How do I generate an Assessment Summary Report? Is there a link to this or do I have to write by myself?

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about this. Most assessors I know don't look at this - they want to do their own assessment of you. You'll see in the notes to the application (the 'i' box again Assessment Summary Report) that it is optional. But if you do want to do it, it is on the "Begin you professional registration journey" link in Career Manager.

Main advice - find a PRA somewhere, because they can discuss your particular application.

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Hi Solomon,

As Andy says it is possible in CM to create a CPD plan but I am assuming you are wanting something more than that.

The various Career Manager (CM) guides available on the website explaining how to use CM were all superseded last October when the new version of CM was released, and while the IET are preparing replacement guides, these are not yet available. I emailed the CM team at the IET asking how to do something related to this (issue a guest ticket to a mentor for review of CPD plans and reports - the bit that Andy can't work out) and received prompt and clear guidance almost by return, so if you or Andy want I can forward the guidance - just let me know. You could also contact the CM team directly, as there are links for contacting them on the CM page.

If you want to do more than just plan CPD then I would suggest something outside CM may be optimum, of possibly a hybrid, with CPD planned within CM but longer term goals identified externally and a link/reference to CM. My personal opinion is it doesn't matter what form the DAP is in provided you are comfortable with it and it does what it is meant to in planning your career objectives over the short to medium term (and it is in a form that can be shown to the assessors/interviewers).

Thank you Alasdair Anderson for your response. Kindly share  the CM guidance.

I hope to see the output and perhaps improve on whatever presentation it offers.

Thank you@ Andy Millar for your response, this is quite informative.
  • Hi Solomon,

You can export a CPD Plan (which can be used as a development action plan) using the Get Feedback button in the top right corner, this will allow you to set up a report and select the dates you want this to cover.  As Alasdair has said, there is a suggestion to cover short and longer term plans for this.

In terms of the assessment summary, it's not a mandatory report so if you don't already have one then I would use your time to focus on the appliation at this stage.  If you have one and wish to export it then this can also be done using the "Get Feedback" button on the assessment page.

  • Hi Kathryn, Alasdair.

I see now what I did wrong last night, I'd only created a Goal, without adding activities. Now I've added an activity I can see it in the report.

I tend to find most candidates I work with already have a good CPD plan (usually just called a development plan or similar) as part of their employer's annual review / appraisal system, so I generally suggest they just attach that rather than using Career Manager (unless they particularly want to use CM for personal reasons). As long as the development activities are somewhat aligned to the UK spec competences, which they usually are.

    Thanks,

    Andy
  • Hi Andy,

I'd always say the same as well - if you already have a plan, then don't worry about reinventing it just attach the plan you have as long as it covers more than just the next few months.  I recommend Career Manager for those that don't have this in place, or can't use company ones though as it gives a good framework.

    Regards,

    Kathryn
