Old Delta (Δ) Service Head Cut-Out

Good morning all,

During a survey, i came across what seems to be a very old Delta Cut-Out (attached picture for reference).

I contacted Eaton (who as far as i know now own Delta) but they couldn't provide me with any information on it.

I believe it is a fused cut out installed by the local DNO and directly connected to the LV network or to an adjacent substation, but can anyone please confirm?

Any information would be helpful.

Thank you,

Ilias

  • Certainly looks like a DNO's cut-out (fuse) - but the same equipment can occasionally be used for other (e.g. private) work - the situation might tell you more that the equipment spec. in that regard - e.g. if it's a simple domestic or commercial situation known to have a direct grid supply and the cables out of the top go directly to the supplier's meter(s) etc then yes it's likely to be the DNO's equipment. On the other hand if it's in a remote outbuilding and directly feeding a DB or landlord's meter then it might be just be a convenient way of terminating a submain cable and be part of the consumer's installation.

  • Do the 4 tails go to a meter , and if so who reads that meter ? (look for an MPAN number) - it certainly has all the appearance of a DNO head, and in any case the top half will hold 3 fuses and a bolted neutral. The lower part shoulc contain  an earth clamp to the cable armour, and is probably filled with tar.

If it is running hot or seems to be live , then contact the DNO.
  • It might not be as old as you think!

It appears almost identical to one that is in the switchroom of the building I live in - the building was only constructed in 1995.

Unfortunately I don't have any technical information on it!

Looks more like a good old Jubilee clip to me!

It isn't sealed...... it might be waiting for the "seal fairy" to turn up!

I doubt if it is filled with bitumen, but as today's work was to do with one of these and back on site tomorrow (I'm trying to give up consecutive days working!) I'll have a knock.

  • Tails available in any colour you want, so long as it’s brown.
  • Just been down in the basement and the one here is exactly the same as the one in your original photograph, with the exception that on the one here, the supply cable comes straight up out of the floor and into the bottom cable entry, whereas in the one in your photograph it comes in via a corner entry.

It doesn't sound like it is compound filled when tapped. Most modern fillings will be a synthetic resin, avoiding the nastyness and (most of) the messyness of bitumen! ?

Jubilee clip? Perhaps the black thing is a water pipe?

Anyway the Delta box has a sticker on it stating that it is Bar Coded.
