Tails size

Hello hope everyone has managed to keep safe this far.

I need to install a TPN isolator from the cutout so if needed for future maintenance we can isolate panel board.

My question is what size tails would I need the isolator will be within 2m of the panel board looking at table 4D1A column 9 looks about right which leads to 70mm cable how easy are these to handle and terminate also are there any alternative suggestions?

This will be my first time playing with tails this size ?

Thanks in advance Ts.
  • What size supply/load are you dealing with?

200A TPN. You must be bored ?
  • And the rating of the supply fuse is? What is the installation method for these tails? What rating factors need to be applied?

Hi John, TPN 200A cutout fuses. Clipped direct. 2-3m run if that. No other rating factors apply. Using table 4D1A to size.

    thanks Ts.
  • This cable is stiff but not impossible to bend fairly easily except close to the ends. Depending on your choice of isolator you may find that the terminals are studs and so you may need suitable crimp tags and tools to install. You will need the DNO to isolate the supply as this size is fairly dangerous when pulling fuses without suitable PPE.

Yes minimum size 70mm but if a sustained 200A load they will run very hot (70 degrees). 95mm is usual for a 200A supply fuses but the load is usually a lot less and not sustained. If you know the actual load then I can calculate the running temperature for 95mm?

That's a good point you make about the sustained current draw and heat generated John.

Just like to thank everyone for their replies, the client has now decided to stick with the original 100A TPN supply ?.

The ease of use with a cable of this CSA was one of my concerns, coming from the fire and security industry I'm more use to handling 8-core security cable and the largest is normally no bigger than 2.5mm FP ?. I was looking at using a Tri rated cable if I've got it right was told this is alot easier to work with and it's temp rating is higher than normal tails etc not sure how true all of this is. Have you ever used or heard of this cable type?

Out of interest how much would you expect to pay for the crimp tags and the crimper, what types of crimper would you guys recommend based on experience pro and cons along with your replys would be very helpful using the categories listed below

    cost

    Ease of use

    battery life if applicable

    durability

    Weight

    Thanks Ts

The DNOs will not accept tri-rated tails if presented with them.  19 strand singles, either in trunking or insulated and sheathed singles, would be the usual.

Some wholesalers high out crimping tools or hire companies. My indent crimpers will crimp 95s or you might go for a hydraulic crimper with the correct dies.
