18TH EDITION AMD 2

Big day today the DPC for 18TH Edition AMD 2 was published on the British Standards web site this morning.
  • Maybe the BSI are winding it up early to reissue it as a pdf ?

    Legh
  • This is not a valid consultation, because the information is not presented in an accessible manner, so it needs to be declared null and void.

    Andrew Betteridge.
  • The DPC does not seem to be available anymore and I have only been able to read a small part because the site is worse than hopeless. It now says that comments finished yesterday! Perhaps they don't like them!
  • Hmm, well I never got to see more than a table of contents and a revolving circle indicating something may or may not be loading.

However, complaining on here, while fun and informative to other members, is less likely to secure an outcome than complaining to the BSI.

    EDIT

I did complain when it looked like it had already closed for comments, and was throwing folk out. However, it is now back, just slow. But we have some weeks to digest it.

    regards Mike.

  • I understand, from a very well informed source that due to an oversight in the original 18thed regarding equipotential bonding for PME systems "not needed anymore" the latest amendment corrects this obvious error and PME bonding, as reqd by the DNOs, is now to be completed in all installations regardless of whether a plastic insert is fitted. The wiring regulations people, working from home in Tenerife and South of France, concede that as experienced electricians took no notice of this mistake anyway so few if any consumers were affected.

Regards, and a reminder that the DNOs are available 24 hours, 7 days, 365 days a year.

  • The DPC appears to be back.  Now split into more manageable parts.  It seems to work but it is still quite slow!
  • Yes, can confirm that I can currently access it. As you say, split into 4 chunks, but still painfully slow.

Currently showing open for comments till 11th December.

From the intro it looks as though this is intended to be released March 28th 2022.
  • John Peckham:

Some interesting new stuff. A new Part 8 for Prosumers Electrical Instalations and a new defininition PEI to learn.

Foundation earthing for new build and extensions.

Type A RCDs in preference to Type AC to be used on resistive circuits only.

AFDDs compulsory for high current circuits in dwellings.

    lots of other interesting stuff.

Please don't shoot the messenger on this occasion!

lots of debate on the forum  I am thinking?

This is your big chance to feed back your views on the changes or forever hold your views!

    John

thanks for bringing this to our attention.

In the spirit of debate, it looks like AFDD are now compulsory EXCEPT for high current circuits? And not limited to dwellings, see screenshot below.

(At the time of my posting, there is already one comment that this will increase the cost to customers, leading to people not upgrading CU's)

  • People complain about a £500 mains board change. What are they going to do when it costs 2 grand? Unless AFDD's are suddenly going to be £20, and not lead to most small houses needing a double rail board, then who is going win any jobs to change to this. Especially as AFDD's effectiveness is questionable at best. I feel sorry for all the Landlords that are going to be forced into this by the new renting rules ( I think the law is a good one for safety of tenants) who are now going to be forced, with no choice but to spend £2k on a board that meets the 18th Amd 2
  • Presumably it will be similar to when RCDs came in. New installation, no problem. Complete board change (for other reasons) no problem. What will be a problem will be new circuits e.g. for an extension or that shower squeezed into a corner somewhere. If they have to have AFDD and the existing board won't accept them, that means a board change.

All abord - the gravy train will be departing on 28 March 2022 or should that be 4 days later? ?
