  • IET at the TTCAA STEM Aviation Summer Camp

As part of engaging with young students in various STEM and STEAM activities, our local network was invited to the Trinidad & Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA) STEM Aviation Summer camp, on Thursday 23rd July 2015. Colin and I had a captive, but highly excited, audience of over 200 children between the ages of 11 and 14yrs and the task was to excite them about STEAM in avaition. (A quick photo of the first class before we begin the presentation) (Photo of the second group engaged in the IET's Engineering Our World video) Everyone was excited by the various engineered designes and ideas in aviation, as it demonstrated the benefit of each element of STEAM in developing an aviation industry and an aviation engineer for the next century. The key focus was to link each discipline of STEAM…

  • Robots in Agriculture

In May, one of our exec team members, Sam Wane, travelled to the Channel Islands to deliver several presentations on the subject of Robots in Agriculture. The mini tour was a huge success and Sam tells us more about it below: " On 20-22nd May I visited the Channel Islands to talk about agriculture and robotics. This was sponsored by the IET Robotics & Mechatronics TPN, and the Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers , the representative body for the professional engineering institutions in the Channel Islands I landed in Guernsey and lectured to Elizabeth College school for boys (12-18) Then I was interviewed for a radio programme on BBC Radio Guernsey. My Guernsey interview 3hr12mins after Wham! I was also interviewed by the Guernsey Press newspaper but haven’t heard if I’m in. And…

He is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin. Delegates…

  • Online Careers Solution

The Railway Network would like to draw your attention to a new project that is being developed by the Young Railway Professionals (YRP) in collaboration with Routes into Rail . One of the Routes into Rail strategic projects is the development of an Online Careers Solution to promote rail careers to students and feedback on the idea from the Railway industry would be appreciated whilst they are still considering what this solution should be like. The YRP have prepared this survey (just 6 questions) which they’d be grateful if you could please respond to. Please send all responses to Guilia Lorenzini by 6th August 2015 to help the YRP meet their challenging delivery timescales.

  • Present and Future Robotics In Space Applications 29-30 October 2015

It is an exciting time for robotics. Robotic systems are increasingly being used in dealing with the challenges of space and other extreme environments where it is impossible to have a human presence or where robots can accomplish new tasks that humans cannot. This Space Robotics Symposium sponsored by IET Robotics & Mechatronics TPN and IMechE, organised by Strathclyde Space Institute and SMeSTech provides a platform for researchers to share innovative research and application findings in this rapidly-evolving field. This Symposium aims to provide a platform for researchers, academics, industrialists and engineers to share the latest developments and future ideas or position papers in robotics. It is intended to run this Symposium by inviting researchers, industrialists and other who are interested…

  • Autonomous Vehicles: From Theory To Full Scale Applications

18th June saw the Control & Automation TPN's flagship event on Autonomous Vehicles: from theory to full scale applications. This was a full day event, held in a magnificent venue in central Paris and was a joint venture between the TPN and CNRS, GdR Robotique and Renault. We were also very pleased to welcome a couple of our colleagues from the IET France network to the event and managed to film a quick chat with them both. Over 70 delegates attended and heard from some fantastic speakers, including Shad Laws from Renault, Serge Lambermont, Automated Driving Director, Delphi US Silicon Valley, Axel Fuchs from Quanergy, and Professor Michael Fisher, University of Liverpool, to name but a few. A good range of topics kept the delegates attention throughout the day, covering such subjects as Addressing…

  • 30th Anniversary of The IET Satellite Communications Systems Course

A note from David Bookham CEng MIET Course Chairman As the satellite communications industry has evolved, each new technology has provided increased throughput and flexibility. This has resulted in highly sophisticated Broadband satellite terminals becoming a commercially viable proposition to both commercial and domestic users alike. The evolution started with the development of advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms ensuring quasi error free links which were well suited to packet switched traffic. Since IP traffic could now be carried with almost zero packet loss, the use of ACM (using high order modulation schemes and flexible FEC codes) resulted in the commercial exploitation of Ka band and the use of small beam sizes and more efficient spectrum usage. Now in its 30th year,…

  • Nigeria Celebrates One Year Without Polio case

Nigeria Celebrates One Year Without Polio case Health officials in Nigeria are celebrating an impressive milestone: The country has gone one year without a single case of polio. The world is now one step closer to making polio the second human infectious disease – after smallpox – to be eradicated with an effective vaccination campaign. Nigeria will need to go another two years without a recorded case of the disease before the WHO declares it polio-free

  • Sacred Cows - Challenging Fundamental Safety Principles

Sacred Cows - Challenging Fundamental Safety Principles Most of the UK transport systems are operating at or above capacity, what has been done to increase capacity has already been done, for example longer trains, managed motorways and efficient air traffic control on the air corridors around the UK. However, we still need more! This evening seminar will look at whether we would now start challenging what we could call "Fundamental Safety Principles" in these three industries. Can we operate trains, cars and planes at closer headways if we take a very hard look at some of these tablets of stone? Do we have to increase the risk of an accident (will we be allowed to) if even by a small margin in order increase the throughout (and thus reduce other risks e.g. overcrowding etc.) I am sure there…

  • Latest from our Communities: SoCal Network takes a tour of Google

This was originally an article in IET Member News The IET Southern California (SoCal) Local Network (LN) was recently given the opportunity to have a tour of Google Irvine. Since its reformation in early 2012, the SoCal LN has gone from strength to strength. It now averages eight meetings/tours a year and interest continues to grow – so much so that it now often has more guests than IET members in attendance! This may be due in part to the range of special events it offers, as LN volunteer Julian Harvey highlighted: “We’re concentrating on one off, difficult to organise events, which started in January 2014 with a tour of Space X. Later we arranged a meeting on radio astronomy at CalTech, which was another first for us. The Google meeting was the highest attended event since the LN reformed…

  • Historical Photos Circulating Depict Women Medical Pioneers

You may have seen the shot: it’s of a group of medical students and they’re all women. One’s from Japan, one’s from India and the third from Syria. They’re all wearing traditional clothes from their home countries. Nothing too remarkable in that, you might say. Until you see the date. 1885. These women were students at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMCP). The original image resides in the archives of Drexel University which eventually absorbed the successor to the WMCP in 2003. Archivist Matt Herbison was able to dig up much more about the women as well. These women were nothing short of medical pioneers. All three graduated and each of them thus became the first woman from their respective countries to get a degree in western medicine. Read more...
