  • Resources From earlier TPN Events

    The Satellite Systems & Applications TPN have organised a number of excellent events in the past couple of years and here is a reminder of some resources that you can view. HYLAS 1 - From dream to reality HYLAS 1 was the first broadband satellite from Avanti Communications and uses Ka-band technology to deliver high speed, two-way data services across Europe. It has a unique flexible payload which enables Avanti to change the bandwidth of its eight Ka-band beams whilst in orbit, to maximise satellite efficiency. HYLAS 1 is complemented by a Ku-band broadcast capability and can provide up 2mb satellite broadband to users across Europe. A summary of the presentation slides can be found here .   • Joint Institutions Annual Dinner 2015

    The Joint Annual Dinner is being organised this year by our friends the ICE France.   • Early Career Professionals' Best Paper Competition 2014

    Earlier this year, the Railway TPN decided on a theme of ‘Intelligent Mobility’ for the 2014 competition, which was held in London on 27 November 2014.   • IET Caribbean Communities Membership Meeting

    The IET Caribbean Communities membership meeting attracted both existing members and interested parties, who were keen to understand what the institution had to offer them. The Chairman Anthony Chadee opened the meeting and introduced the me as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.   • Driverless Cars Test Locations Named

    The four locations to host the first driverless car testing have been named. Greenwich will host the Gateway Scheme, Bristol the Venturer Consortium and and Milton Keynes and Coventry will co-host the UK Autodrive programme.     Details of our previous IET Healthcare Technologies award winners can be found below. William James Award 2019 winner Dana Al Sulaiman, Imperial College London Presentation:  Engineering hydro-based sensing platforms for the detection of circulating cell-free nucleic acid biomarkers Dr Dana Al Sulaiman completed her MEng degree in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2015. She finished top of her class and was awarded the ‘Centenary Prize’ and ‘Governor’s MEng Prize’ for demonstrating all-round excellence. She was then granted the prestigious President’s PhD Scholarship to support her further studies. Could you make a machine to turn the pages of a newspaper for someone with no arms? The ingenious inventors and engineers at the charity Remap do all this and more. Interested in joining in? The event was a collaboration between the IET Robotics & Mechatronics TPN and the Control Systems Centre at the University of Manchester.     At a meeting of the IET Peterborough and Huntingdon Network on Tuesday 25th November 2014, at The Bell, Stilton, the current President - Professor William Webb, who is the youngest ever president of the IET - awarded an IET Coat of Arms plaque to Jim Blackburn IEng MIET, who, at 68 years a member of our Institution, is believed to be one of the longest current serving members!

  • IET Announces Winners Of Achievement Awards

    A pioneer in medical technology has been awarded the IET’s Faraday Medal, as part of the institution’s Achievement Awards. Professor Christofer Toumazou invented and commercialised “lab-on-a-chip” technology that can decode a patient’s DNA in under 30 minutes, enabling testing for genetic disease and drug intolerances on the spot. The co-editor-in-chief of the IET’s Electronics Letters journal has also been responsible for developing cochlear implants for children born deaf and an artificial pancreas for type 1 diabetics and now holds more than 50 patents and employs over 350 people. Despite leaving school with no A-Levels he has published more than 750 research papers, founded the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College and set up two successful medical device companies – Toumaz…
