    The IET Automotive & Road Transport TPN are pleased to announce that they are supporting the new Electric Motorcycle racing series MotoE Several members of the IET are providing the technical support for the series and you can see further details here on the panel and their interests . The series is running across five race weekends in the UK and Europe and the series finale is coming to Silverstone on 11-12 October 2014 as part of the No Limits event.   • Pilot UWIAATT - IET TT LN Mentorship Programme

    The University of the West Indies Alumni Association Trinidad and Tobago chapter (UWIAATT) extended an invitation to the Trinidad and Tobago Local Network (IET TT LN) to develop a pilot mentorship partnership programme. This was initiated due to the high demand of engineering students entering the mentorship programme and wanting to be partnered with an engineer. This pilot programme started with the pairing of two second year Electrcial & Computer Engineering students with myself and based upon the interactions and feedback wtih the students, we will be able to fine tune our approach to mentoring young engineers and strengthen the relationship with the Alumni association.   • Robots That Learn: The Future Of Man Or The

    On 2nd September, as part of the TAROS 2014 Conference, Dr Sethu Vijayakumar gave the IET/TAROS Public Lecture and delivered a fascinating insight into how robots have increasingly made the journey from industry floors to our homes. Some examples given included self-driving vehicles, prosthetic devices, surgical assistants and service robots for drilling, mining and cleaning. The world of interactive, autonomous robotics is a totally absorbing, exciting area and Professor Vijayakumar demonstrated the scientific challenges experienced, and showed some of the cutting edge research that is aimed at making robots as versatile, safe, reactive and adaptive as us humans. The speaker David Hampson-Ghani shared with us his biggest challenges whilst working on this project as well has predicting the next progression for buses.     First of all, I'd like to say a big "thank you" to everyone who made this conference happen. This includes all of you who gave up your time to travel to Dublin, the EMEA-CC who worked tirelessly on the programme, my colleagues within the IET who took care of all logistics and advised us on the agenda, and of course our wonderful hosts from the Ireland Local Network . For many of us the proceedings kicked off a day early to watch the EMEA regional Present Around The World final.   • Speedy charging driving a global boom in electric cars

    Electric cars seem to be gaining ground in the UK and elsewhere. According to Ecotricity, the company that has installed a network of charging stations along the UK's motorways, we are seeing a "revolution". Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicated that electric car sales have now topped the 10,000 mark in the UK. As well as government incentives that have cut ownership costs, a key development is the roll-out of a network of superfast chargers at motorway stations. Over the past year, Ecotricity say they have installed around 170 of these units, covering 90% of the network. These allow you to charge your car battery up 80% in 20-30 minutes.     I liked this interesting and informative article on the RAeS website relating to the Royal Flying Corps crossing over to France in August 2014 at the beginning of the Great War, which I thought I'd share with community members. Those pioneer airmen were certainly brave flying such flimsy, unreliable and at that point unarmed machines. Sadly some of them didn’t even make it across the channel. Over the four years of the war, the aerial service developed into a force of nearly a third of a million officers and men, 378 squadrons and around 22,000 aircraft.
