A plan to declutter the UK’s system of technical education for over-16s has been revealed today with the aim of attracting more teenagers to technical careers in order to plug skills gaps. The Skills Plan, announced by the government today, is based on a review of technical education and the apprenticeship system carried out by a committee chaired by Lord Sainsbury. Read more...
Despite the fact that leading figures in the engineering community have called for the hard hat to be banned from promotional and educational material, it remains dominant, giving the wrong impression of the role according to Sainsbury Management Fellows' (SMF) 2016 Hard Hat Index. The Index was compiled by tracking the number of advertisements and articles that feature hard hats in 17 engineering publications from May 2015 to April 2016. Although this is the fourth year in a row that the data has been tracked, the use of hard hats in the engineering media is as high as the previous year's Index, with 257 images appearing in the 17 titles monitored over 12 months. This figure is the highest since the Index was launched in 2013. Read more...
At the TAROS 2016 conference, alongside the IET/TAROS public lecture , the IET also sponsored a prize for " The most promising innovation in Robots ". The award was presented to Paolo Angeles and here, Paolo tells us more about himself and winning the prize: Hello, my name is Paolo Angeles. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Imperial College London surrounding the quantification of Parkinson’s disease symptoms using sensors built at our lab, the Biomechatronics lab here in Imperial College London. I recently had a paper accepted at the TAROS 2016 conference to then present to the academic audience there. A question that always seems to initiate a good discussion in the engineering community is what would make the ideal guest list for dinner. Obviously within an engineering and technology context… However, I can announce that the IET will not be branching out into hosting exclusive dinners for engineers. BUT we do host a Prestige Lecture Series that showcases the latest ideas and technologies within the engineering world. These lectures cover many engineering disciplines, ranging from general interest to the more technical. An example was the Turing Lecture given by Robert Schukai who is Head of Applied Innovation for Thomson Reuters. Derrick Willer presented the IET Innovation Prize to ECCE Team from C áslav, Czech Republic at the International Final of the Land Rover 4X4 In Schools Competition in Coventry. Overall World Champions were team Wombat Warriors from Pine Rivers State School, Australia with runners up also from Australia and from Portugal. Derrick is our volunteer Schools Liaison Officer in the IET Coventry and Warwickshire Local Network.
As many of the readers of our blog will know, I am quite interested and focused in research relative to the formation and execution of Company Strategy and also the methods used in defining company policy. The IET Functional Safety TPN was heavily involved in the Environmental and Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS) 2016 which is the MOD’s flagship Symposium focusing on Equipment Safety and Environmental Management. Working in partnership with MOD, DE&S, Atkins and IIRSM, the IET FS TPM were involved in keynotes, speakers, chairing a topic, reviewing papers, reviewing awards, presenting awards.
