  • PATW Competition 2013-14

    The Barcelona group recently organised their PATW competition which took place on 18th October at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. There were four competitors presenting on the following subject: • ³Cat-1: The CubeSat inititative at the UPC NanoSat Lab • Automatic design of an artificial neural network for Unreal Tournament 2004 • Design of an electronics device to measure audible hearing level • Engineering and all things "bio-" The day of the event, all was prepared at the graduation hall of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, our hosting institution, with contenders ready with their full presentations and the audience interested to learn more on the announced topics.     This talk concentrated on the application of Civil Nuclear Power in the United Kingdom from the first commercial power plant in Cumbria through to the the new fleet of Nuclear Power plant being planned over the next 20 years. View Presentation The development of the current UK Nuclear power plant in terms of size, complexity and operational characteristics will be discussed for the Magnox, Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors and the Pressurised Water Reactors The impact of Fukushima will be discussed for both Operational and New Nuclear Power plant.   • Smart Grids 2013 Abstracts And Posters

    The IET’s Power Systems and Equipment Technology Network hosted a Smart Grids Poster Session in October 2013. The evening reception brought the community together to foster new collaborations, encourage multi-disciplinary interactions and showcase the latest developments in Smart Grids. The evening included 17 posters on Smart Grids. The posters were peer reviewed and accepted following a call for abstracts from individuals, academia, companies, and various institutions to showcase their products and how these products fit into this future system along with the visions, anticipated problems, expected solutions, and the commercial overview of the future of the system.     This event not only showcases the rail industry, but also demonstrates the science and apprenticeship and graduate engineering opportunities available in this growing area. It provides the rail industry with the opportunity to promote its activity, network with other key players and interact with young people.     TRL are asking all community members to help out with a new and exciting research into wireless charging of electric vehicles. It would be greatly appreciated if you could please take about 10-15 minutes to respond to this questionnaire . This survey is part of a task led by TRL and in collaboration with VUB in a European research project to investigate the socio-economic impacts of WPT charging of electric vehicles and more specifically the social acceptance elements. With the venue filled almost to capacity we were treated to two lectures on RFID principles, applications and the Internet of Things and Data capture software and real-time visibility within manufacturing and the supply chain The first lecture delivered by Oliver Puetz-Gerbig of Balluff covered the principles of RFID, and the differences between various frequencies of systems before moving onto future developments of RFID.   • Joseph Baddeley awarded prize for Student Excellence

    Joseph Baddeley, a foundation degree engineering student from Birches Head has been awarded a certificate for student excellence and a cheque for £250.00 by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. After leaving school Joe studied at Stoke-on-Trent College and obtained a BTEC L3 in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. After a period working for JCB he returned to college to study for a Foundation Degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology and has passed with merit. Paul Bloor, course leader at Stoke-on-Trent College, said, “Joseph has put a lot of effort into his studies, is very well organised and respected by his peers.
