  • Recognition Evening

    Mersey & Western Cheshire Network recently held a Recognition Evening on 20 March 2014 which was hosted by Barry Brooks , IET President. The event recognised those members who had been recently registered for CEng, IEng and EngTech, plus recent election to Fellow and also those members who had either recently moved into the Network area or joined the IET. An IET Education Award was also presented to Dylan Thomlinson . In addition to the ceremony there were also presentations from John McDonald , Deputy Network Chairman on the organisation and work of the Network and Matt Wilson, Chairman, Telecoms Cloud Limited on how he’d personally benefited from being an IET member.   • David Lindsley from Teddington hands over to Cathryn Walton

    At the IET London – Teddington event on Tuesday 5 th March 2014, Davy Thielens (Chairman of the IET London Network) formally gave thanks to David Lindsley, parting chairman of the Teddington branch of the London Network, for his contribution to the IET and the IET London Network Committee. David has been actively involved with the IET for over 30 years and a member for over 50 years. It is volunteers such as David that ensure the IET is able to organise events for our local communities tailored to their local interests and needs. Local Networks would not exist without such volunteers. As an entrepreneur, lecturer and even novelist, David managed to find time to play an integral role in starting the Teddington branch and soon became Chairman.   • Our new East London Network branch to launch their first event on the 24th of April!

    Good news! The new IET East London network will be hosting it's first talk at 6:30pm on April 24th, at Queen Mary University near Mile End in East London. https://localevents.theiet.org/register.php?event=61bd3b East London has been an engineering powerhouse for hundreds of years, home to everything from the first tunnel under a river to today's leading software companies.     Exec member, Lim Yew-Kee, has been extremely busy recently presenting a series of talks, sponsored by the IET Manufacturing Technical and Professional Network to University students in Penang. Details of just two of these talks are below. The 1st Technical Talk was delivered on the 18th December 2013 and was entitled Understanding of Electrical and Electronic Product Development.   • New Data Protection App Tested In Switzerland

    Swiss researchers have developed a new Android application that enables securing shared information automatically. The app, said to be the first semi-automated system to filter what information from a smartphone can be transmitted to a third party or made accessible, will undergo an extensive trial during the summer to validate the approach. Developed by Igor Bilogrevic and Kevin Huguenin, both researchers at the Laboratory for Computer Communications and Applications at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), is designed to protect data such as geographical location or current activities that could be exploited by cyber criminals.   • UK-designed Airship Preparing For Flight

    Lorne Sharp, IET Transport Editor was fortunate enough to see the unveiling of the Hybrid Air Vehicle 304, which is set to take to the skies of Britain next year. HAV304 is being prepared for flight tests, it has flown once in 2012, when it was part of a US military project to build long-endurance surveillance craft in support of operations in Afghanistan.   • Manchester Network - Education Award Winner

    At the 2014 OCR Raspberry Jamboree held at the Manchester Central Conference Centre, Amy Mather (14) was presented with the IET Education Award for the Manchester region for "Inspiring young people to develop STEM and digital skills". The IET Education Award is a new award introduced by The IET in 2013. It is presented regionally by IET local networks to young people (aged 12-19), and rewards them for excellence in taking part in a project or activity within their school or other organisation.   • New Professional Registration Advisors Trained For The Middle East

    New professional registration advisors trained for the Middle East Last December the IET hosted an event to train 11 international professional registration advisors (IPRAs) to cover the Middle East. Increasing the region’s number of IPRAs by a factor of three, these advisors will be working across countries including Qatar, UAE, Egypt and Oman, allowing for more engineers across the Middle East to gain access to professional registration support. “This project was all about removing the bottlenecks for engineers to become professionally registered,” explains IET Europe, Middle East and Africa Communities Committee (EMEA-CC) chairman Iain Murdoch. “In the EMEA region there was a limited number of advisors who had an increasing workload.   • Augmented reality for future seafarers

    Rolls-Royce envisions bridges of ships ten years from now will be packed with augmented reality technology and equipped with smart workstations. The company, working with the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), has introduced a series of innovative designs proposing workstations capable of recognising automatically who has sat in front of them. The bridge-windows, Rolls-Royce proposes, could be turned into augmented reality displays, showing navigation information, weather alerts and routes and locations of other ship in the area.
