    Mike Henry, BEng CEng MIET CMgr MCMI Chair, IET Singapore Network  Mike Henry is a Project Engineering Manager for Wood in Singapore, concentrating in the oil and gas engineering sector. He has lived and worked in Singapore since 2009, but spent 2 years overseas working on assignment in Vietnam and has recently returned to Singapore. Prior to 2009, Mike worked in the UK for Wood (legacy Foster Wheeler) in Reading, but spent various periods of time overseas on assignments in various locations. He joined the IET as a student in 1997, while studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.     We're now launching the IET's annual photography competition for 2019 in a bid to challenge the stereotypical image of hard hats and dirty overalls often associated with engineering and instead showcase modern engineering.Open to any photograph of an engineering-related subject that captures the creative, exciting and modern face of engineering and engineers today, the competition is split into two age groups – under 16 and 17 and over – with five categories to enter.  Design & Production Digital Environment & Energy Structures Transport Judges include Gadget Show host Georgie Barrat, Editor of Amateur Photographer magazine Nigel Atherton, E&T magazine Picture Editor Gillian Abbott and Vice-Chair of the IET Young Professionals Communities Committee (YPCC).   • 2019 Bio-Buddy Event, Held At University Of Ottawa

    The IET Local Network sponsored, and helped judge the first Bio-Buddy design competition which was held as part of the University of Ottawa Design DayOn a sunny but cool Friday morning three teams of undergraduates from Ottawa University presented their Design Reports and Entries for the first Bio-Buddy event. Each team signed up to design and prototype a semi realistic infant child mannequin, under the age of 12 months, that is intended to improve CPR training by providing a more realistic experience for CPR training courses attendees. The competition was framed by a detailed specification and a set of evaluation criteria.   • IET-PBOC Charity Event 2019

    Friday, 5th April 2019, Kuala Belait - IET Politeknik Brunei On Campus (IET-PBOC) organised a charity event for special needs students at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Kuala Belait.The event is conducted to give opportunity for volunteers, consisted of students from Politeknik Brunei and Universiti Teknologi Brunei, to contribute to the society. Simultaneously, the volunteers were given first hand experience to interact with special needs students and formed friendship bonds with them. The charity event began with the welcoming speech by Pusat Ehsan staffs followed by activities to enhance the creativity of Pusat Ehsan students such as Cupcake Decoration, Hand Painting and Indoor Gardening. At the end of the activity, gifts are presented by IET-PBOC to Pusat Ehsan students.

  • Friction, Lubrication And Wear (FLW) Or Tribology As We Know It!

    (FLW) as an acronym is easy to remember, which certainly helped me when I first started looking after the IET’s Tribology Network last year and was getting to grips with what the subject encompassed.   A year has passed and I’ve come to appreciate that there is so much more to Tribology and how it has many applications across a wide range of sectors.  We recently held our two day conference in Birmingham at IET Austin Court where we welcomed a good mix of industry, academia and student delegates to the event.    This year we were pleased to have so many poster submissions, as we managed to double the numbers from the 2018 event and had 19 presenters over the two days.   Day One poster competition was won by Bjoern Kunzelmann from Imperial College London with his poster on ‘Experimental and…

    The Berkshire Local Network PATW competition was held at UTC Reading on 21 st March 2019, but you could be forgiven for thinking that you had come to an Institution of Civil Engineers’ meeting, as three of the four presenters talked about civil engineering related subjects.   The first speaker, Samuel Hyginus, an electrical engineer who works for Peter Brett Associates, spoke about recruitment in the construction industry, and his enthusiasm for the industry was clear, particularly in the question and answers session.   • KTJ OXBRIDGE ENGINEERING WORKSHOP

    20190310 On 10th March 2019, IET YPS Malaysia Network had collaborated and organized a STEM based workshop with 100 energetic and creative Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ) International School secondary school students. The workshop has been specifically designed to give students the opportunity to research, design, develop and presents their creative solution to genuinely tough engineering problems. The students have to perform their ability to allocate workforce, resources and time. Students were given the challenge to create a working scale model prototype to manage the traffic beside construction site with the use of BBC micro:bit and design materials for a crane prototype.   • Budding Young Engineers Take Part In FIRST®︎ LEGO®︎ League Jr. Expo

    For the first time, teams of young students from Hertfordshire, London and Kent took part in our FIRST LEGO League Jr. Expo at the IET's offices at Michael Faraday House on Wednesday 13 March 2019.The science and technology challenge, which is aimed at 6-9 year olds, tasks teams to build a LEGO Model and program one moving element, whilst also researching the annual theme. This year’s theme is called MISSION MOONSM – looking at how humans could survive and live on the moon taking into account how to breathe, what to eat and drink and what other problems we might face. Coached by IET colleagues, six teams of primary school children showcased their work, which included a Moon Base that had to include a moving element and a research poster, which showed all that they had learnt about the moon…
