  • Attendance At 'The Manufacturing Forum' Event - 17th September 2019.

    I was invited by Peter Edwards who's the Chief Executive at the International Trade Forum, to an event they'd organised at the AMRC last week where James Muir the chair of the SCR LEP gave a presentation about the economy in SY and offered his views on how the region needs to attract more inward investment. Productivity in the South Yorkshire region is quite low compared with other more industrial  areas of the UK and does not compare well with other similar sectors in the EU. It was suggested that a recession will follow even with a deal but if  'no deal' then the  SCR would be hit quite hard. There is quite a significant Productivity divide between the North and the South and a gloomy perspective was forecasted.   • Regional Faraday Challenge and Asia Pacific Community Volunteer Conference 2019

    G'Day all In less than 2 weeks, the 1st Regional Faraday Challenge and 5th Asia Pacific Community Volunteer Conference (AP CVC) will be held in Brunei from the 5th and 6th October 2019.  The Asia Pacific Community Volunteer Conference is organised by the Communities Committee – Asia Pacific (CC-AP).   • IET Membership Talk - Route To Professional Registration

    Saturday, 21st September 2019 - The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Local Network (LN) recently conducted an IET Membership Talk entitled Route to Professional Registration at i-Lotus in Kampong Rimba, Brunei. The talk was attended by a total of 58 individuals with technical background from the government as well as from private sectors.   Mr. Lim Sam Lee, the International Professional Registration Advisor (IPRA) for IET Brunei LN, gave a presentation on the benefit of joining the professional organization and the route to apply for IET Chartered Engineer (CEng).   • University Of Sheffield's - IForge 'Unimaker' Symposium & Workshop Event - 12th &13th September 2019.

    As a sponsor of the UoS iForge, a practical 'Maker-space' for students studying at the University, the IET SYLN were invited to attend as an exhibitor to their first Symposium & Workshop event on the 12th &13th September 2019. The event was held in their prestigious Diamond Building (where the iForge is located) using a selection of lecture theaters in this building covering a variety of presentations & workshops. The exhibitors, who are also co-sponsors, were located in a large open space area on the first floor & had stands to demonstrate and showcase their respective products and services.     I attended the subject event by formal invitation on the 10th September at Liberty Steel in Rotherham The event has been set up by Work-Wise annually for the past few years, inviting employers and guest speakers to cover topics of interest. This time the guest  presenters were Mick Hood Director of HR at Liberty Speciality Steels and Lt Col Andrew Black 4th Infantry Brigade -Head of Engagement for the Army in the NE region.   • £200m ‘state-of-the-art’ train manufacturing facility could be built in Yorkshire

    Taken from E&T magazine online Siemens is seeking approval for a £200m “state-of-the-art” train manufacturing facility which could be constructed on a site in Goole, East Yorkshire. The German engineering firm said it will create up to 700 jobs and a further 250 during the construction period. The announcement comes as the UK manufacturing sector struggles under the weight of Brexit uncertainty. An outline planning application has been submitted and the facility will manufacture and commission state-of-the-art trains for the expanding UK market. Siemens is also bidding  to build trains  for the UK’s upcoming HS2 high-speed rail service against competing firms such as Hitachi Rail, Bombardier Transportation and Alstom Transport.     WannaCry (the Microsoft Windows system vulnerability) made its debut in 2017, notably effecting major NHS services. It’s now 2019 and these styles of vulnerability remain active (Ransonware). What is the reason? Why are lessons not being learned from main stream industry failures? Are we still not enforcing patch cycles? Using badly coded websites? Blocking the wrong ports?     It was indeed an experience for all Regional Present Around the World (PATW) delegates and CCAP members when they were in Hong Kong for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Regional PATW competition. Every year IET organises PATW competition to encourage participants to develop and showcase their presentation skills. As usual, we have many talented young participants competing to represent Asia Pacific in the Global Final in London. This year winner was Padmanabhan Krishnamurthy from HK and 1st runner up was Sharma Ankur from Singapore.  Congratulations  to the winners and well done to everyone who joined.   The Regional PATW will not be a success without the support of volunteers from IET HK local network (LN).   • IET-UTBOC Membership Drive 2019

    Saturday, 24th August 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan - On the 24th of August 2019, an IET membership drive was held in UTB with an approximate of 30 students in attendance. Various of courses were seen from the faculty of engineering such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechatronic engineering as well as those from the faculty of computing and informatics. An introduction of IET UTB On Campus had been done by UTBOC chairperson, Ng Jia Ying followed by another talk from Lieutenant Colonel (U) Schufin bin Haji Brahim, BEng (Hons), MPM, MIET, Honorary Chairman IET Brunei Darussalam Local Network 2017/2019. At the end of the membership drive, everyone was given refreshments and had a further catch up and Q&A session with the IET UTB on Campus committee.

  • Ethics In Autonomous Vehicles -more Than Just The Trolley Problem

    Earlier in the summer the ARTS TPN organised a daytime seminar on Ethics in Autonomous Vehicles, which attracted over 60 delegates.  In the morning we had presentations from Professor Tom Sorell, University of Warwick, Reverend Dr Mark Bratton, Bishop of Coventry's Adviser on Medical Ethics, Lucy Yu, Five AI and Alex Bevan, Oxbotica.   In the afternoon Ben Gilburt, Sopra Steria, Zeina Nazer, University of Southampton, Dr Shaun Helman, TRL and Dr Jason Nurse, University of Kent led some moderated discussion sessions.   • UK Space Students All Set For Washington
