  • Midlands Power Group Event - Power Systems On HS2 - Phase 1 And 2A - 9 November 2017

    The Midlands Power Group, in the form of its delegates, were delighted to receive fascinating and informative talks from Stuart Powls, Head of Railway Procurement and Hugh Mace, Head of Power and Mechanical & Electrical Engineering - ‎(HS2) Ltd. Stuart’s theme was procurement with content that was central to Railway Systems Procurement and processes (HS2 Phase 1 and 2a). Thought provoking views were given relating to the process of procurement and the many challenges inherent in these processes i.e. reconciling HS2 advanced concepts and aims (in terms of train speed and frequency of operation) with timelines for completion, particularly phase 1 completion in 2026- in engineering and construction terms, it’s not that far away.   • IET Route to Professional Registration

    Mr Lim Sam Lee, IPRA gave a talk to 21 engineers at DNV-GL Brunei on 24th November 2017.  Mr Lim shared with the engineers about IET and about route to professional registration C.Eng.  Dr Siong Tang was also there to answer some questions from the engineers.  Mr Chua Kim Phong, Contract Manager of DNV GL gave a welcoming remarks and introduction to the company.

  • 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam, Saturday, 28th October, 2017

    The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Brunei Darussalam Network held its 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Saturday, 28 th October 2017 at Li Gong Restaurant, The Empire Hotel and Country Club, Kampong Jerudong. The AGM received the Chairman’s Report for the Session 2016/2017 and the audited account for the Session 2016/2017 from the Honorary Treasurer.  In the AGM, the new Office Bearers, Management Committee Members and Auditors for the term 2017/2018 were elected. The new management committee is comprised of professionals from both the government and private institutions.  Lt Col (U) Schufin bin Hj Brahim from Royal Brunei Armed Forces has been elected as the Honorary Chairman for the new management committee.  Also elected was Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar from the Authority…

    IET Consultation Through this consultation the IET asks members to critically review the current proposals and status of the Northern Power House (NPH) and provide evidence that will shape the future of how the NPH is delivered and the benefits it will deliver.     LAPC 2017 was held last week in Burleigh Court, Loughborough. The 2 day conference on antennas and propagation was another success with delegates hearing from a number of speakers and getting the opportunity to see a wide variety of posters and talk to the authors.     There were a number of exhibitors on hand, of course, including the IET!     During the dinner of the first evening, a number of awards were presented including the James R James Lifetime Achievement Award to Les Barclay.   Did you attend the conference?     Last year the Aerospace Network held a seminar on ‘Ageing Aircraft’ in London and, during the event, it was realised that the majority of those who would benefit the most from this type of event were based in the South-West.  The Network therefore decided to organise a second, more technically-focused, event, which was held at MOD Abbey Wood on 18 October 2017.   Speakers were chosen who could provide delegates with insight into innovative approaches and the  latest technology.  MOD speakers discussed examples of current in-Service ageing issues and provided a Regulator's view.  With the personal support of Air Marshal Young, Chief of Materiel (Air) and Defence Engineering Champion, this second Ageing Aircraft event was aimed at facilitating the exchange of ideas between air teams.  It also…

BEng EMBA PMP MIET Data Protection Officer, IET Singapore 2017/2018 Chair, IET YP Singapore 2016/2018   Eng Hwa is Chairman of the Young Professional Section (YPS) and Data Protection of the Singapore Network.   • The application of DSP microcontrollers to motor drives and power conversion - abstract and presentation

    On Monday 13th November 2017 IET Northumbria Netwrk hosted a presentation by Dr David Atkinson of Newcastle University on the following topic: The Electrical Power Research Group at Newcastle University has a requirement for real-time control in many of its research projects. These projects include many types of motor control applications and power conversion for energy systems. This talk described a general purpose DSP microcontroller based control system that has been developed for use by PhD students and Research Associates. After describing the hardware and software system, a number of application examples were given. Dr Atkinson has kindly consented to the the slides from his presention to be displayed in this blog.

    The Satellite Systems & Applications Network recently held an inaugural event with techUK covering the hot topic of ‘Small Satellites and Constellations’.  The event was well received with over 90 delegates in attendance and unfortunately we had to turn people away due to the popularity of the event.  Those present enjoyed an informative series of presentation and judging by the difficulties we had in getting people back into the lecture room after the networking breaks and lunch, those were popular as well.     The group discusses all aspects of Personal Computing as well as Information and Communication Technology, and organises presentations of interest to members.
