    On the 29th of April 2014, the IET Barcelona local network, together with Bardehle Pagenberg organised a seminar on the Intellectual property in the ICT sector. Our host and fellow IET member Dario gave us a warm welcome and after presentations we were introduced and given an overview on the field of Intellectual property and patents in the ICT sector. Given the vastness of the topic, we were exposed to the essence of the different types of intellectual property, when each of them should be preferred with respect to the others while also explaining why it is important to protect novel technology endeavours. Being able to testify that a company is the owner of a core technology asset can mean a very effective defence against other competitors trying to use it illicitly and can mean the possibility…

    Software Reliability Software robustness is a hot potato in Software Development (from requirement capture to validation and verification - and yes, I think software robustness has to be considered and systematically built into each phase of the software development using appropriate processes and methodologies). Faulty, unreliable software designs are expensive to redesign, enhance, retest and/or maintain. They are also damaging - business and reputably damaging to the developer(s) and their client(s), with potential loss of end-user customers.   • Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance environment competition.

    The ICT KTN are announcing a competition... Traditional, well-modelled, structured information sources are supported by a growing amount of unstructured, less well-defined sources. The addition of non-traditional data sources creates various challenges in sensemaking including use of techniques that can cope with large-scale data. Through this themed competition, the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE), are seeking projects to demonstrate solutions as prototype software capable of taking part in a live information processing experiment in September 2015.     Government announces outline of £500 million package to support ultra low emission vehicles market, infrastructure and research. On 30 April 2014 - Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg yesterday announced the main elements of a £500 million package of measures to support the development and use of ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) from 2015 to 2020. The measures have been designed to support the ultra low emission vehicle industry, as well as to help drivers afford and feel more confident in being able to use electric cars.     By 2050, it is predicted that the human population will have reached nine billion, with three quarters of us living in urban areas. If these areas are to support this rapid population growth, change will be essential.     Caked in red silt, NASA’s Curiosity rover looks like it’s been trekking through a Martian dust storm in this latest interactive panorama. But nothing can tarnish the joy of seeing this incredible machine hard at work on another planet. The dust-covered robot is currently preparing for its third drilling operation on Mars, at a site nicknamed the Kimberley. The rover will run this sample through a series of tests to give scientists a better understanding of the history of water in this area.
