Women in Automotive Engineering - National Women in Engineering Day

Thursday 23rd June is National Women in Engineering Day so the IET Automotive and Road Transport Systems Network are taking a look at some of the inspiring women of the automotive industry. Claudia Parsons (15 August 1900 – 5 June 1998) was a pioneering engineer, intrepid traveller, and author. She was one of the very first women in England to graduate in engineering and later became the first woman to ‘circumnavigate the globe by car. In 1919 Claudia found out from the newly formed Women’s Engineering Society that Diploma courses in Engineering were being introduced at Loughborough Technical College (now Loughborough University). She applied and was accepted, one of only three women engineering students in the whole college. Claudia Parsons graduated from Loughborough with a Diploma in Automobile…

Dorothée Aurélie Marianne Pullinger, MBE (13 January 1894 – 28 January 1986) was a pioneering automobile engineer and businesswoman. In 1910, she began work as a draftsperson at the Paisley works of Scottish automobile firm of Arrol-Johnston, the oldest and largest Scottish car manufacturer, where she trained under her father, a well-known car designer and Managing Director. Pullinger stayed at Arrol-Johnston until WW1 when production changed from cars to airplanes. Pullinger was then appointed female supervisor in charge of 7000 female war workers of the very large munitions facility operated by Vickers…

The winning presentation was made by Diandra Ragoo with her project titled " URI-GO". Our local network was proud to have once again hosted a final competition with innovative students from both the University of the West Indies and the University of Trinidad and Tobago. This event proved that knowledge, passion, innovation and entrepreneurship continues to drive the Caribbean Communities. National Women in Engineering Day - Amy Johnson

As 23 June is National Women in Engineering Day #NWED2016, I thought I would write about Amy Johnson , who although known for her record breaking flights, was also the first women to receive a Ground Engineer’s ‘C’ Licence from the Air Ministry. Amy developed a passion for flying at Stag Lane Aerodrome in London and achieved her full pilots licence in July 1929 after making her first solo flight in June the same year. Having received her pilots licence, Amy knew that if she wanted to earn a living from flying, it was vital that she understood how an aircraft worked and what to do it if did not. Although having only recently passed her pilot’s licence, Amy was keen to push ahead and was already considering the possibility of longer solo trips and also had an ambition to be an agent for De Havilland…

Through-Life Engineering National Strategy Launch

I will be attending the TES National Strategy Launch on Tuesday 5th July 12-30pm to be held at The IET, Savoy House. The event is being supported by Cranfield Univerity, Rolls Royce and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. In their advertising they state that "Following the launch of this initiative at the Houses of Parliament in September 2015 and the setting up of a steering committee to oversee the work the final strategy document and its associated supporting documents will be published on the 5th of July 2016. A series of regional workshops were held and their outputs analysed". National Women In Engineering Day - Helen Sharman

23 rd June is National Women in Engineering Day #NWED2016 and to celebrate this occasion, we are publishing some blogs to highlight the contribution Women have made to Science & Engineering. This blog is about Helen Sharman who was the first British astronaut and is officially also a cosmonaut, as her space mission to the Russian MIR space station was a joint venture with the Soviet Union. Helen spent 7 days, 21 hours and 13 minutes in space and at the age of 27 she was one of the youngest people to go into space. Her mission to MIR began when she responded to a UK radio advert in 1989 ‘ Astronaut wanted – no experience required”. Google designs emojis depicting professional women

Google engineers have designed a set of 13 emojis that they say better represent women in the world of work. The designs have been presented to the Unicode consortium, the body that approves and standardises emojis. The team said that they hoped the samples would "empower young women (the heaviest emoji users) and better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world". Another successful event at BT Dial House

Today, The Manchester Young Professionals Network were hosting the event "Broadband – How do BT deliver the Network infrastructure for the UK, now and in the future". The event was very successful, thanks to those who attended, and also special thanks to BT who organised and ran the event! We were given the chance to visit the BT exchange centre in Manchester, learnt about the very old and the most recent technology BT has to keep the phones and broadband running in many homes in the UK. PATW SW Area Final

Congratuations to the Charlotte Levy and Esther Dunstan-Sewell on their success in the PATW SW Area Final held in Salisbury last week. Charlotte who won the SW AreaFfinal will now go on to the UK Final with her talk on the Science of Cocolate to be held on 21st July. Esther was the runner up with her talk on testing LCD Displays.

The School Gate SET

The School Gate SET is a new online community of parents volunteering to help with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in their children’s primary schools. Set up by Kate Bellingham, (IET member, Champion for Girls' Opportunities in Engineering and former Tomorrow's World presenter), it will provide activity ideas, training and mentoring, through face to face training, a blog and other social media platforms. Do you know a part-time or career break parent with a STEM background and a child in primary school who might like to get involved?
