  • What is the Point of Maths?

    Local Network volunteer, Derek Newport, has recently written a book about mathematics entitled “ Savour the Fruits of Mathematics…not just HOW mathematics works, but WHY is it important, especially in Engineering ?” Derek has visited schools regularly over the past 15 years, nine years under the Young Enterprise Initiative, followed by 6 years as a STEM ambassador, and during this time has sought the feelings of students on mathematics. Answers generally fell into one of two ‘boxes’, “I don’t like maths” and “I don’t see the point of maths”!   • Orange County Vital Link STEAM Event

    If we are going to inspire, Inform, and influence the global engineering community, it's always good to get the imagination of young minds, and so for the second year in a row we supported the http://vitallinkoc.org/ STEM and Arts Career Showcase held over 3 days at the end of April. This event is a collaboration of corporate, education, and non-profit sponsors and exhibitors coming together to create an engaging and interactive career exploration experience emphasizing careers in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and the arts. The showcase, to be held in partnership with OC Fair Imaginology, is focused on providing students with opportunities to explore, discover, and connect to their future careers.     At the end of March we had a great local heat for the PATW, with 4 presentations on water filtering, the USC Rocketry club, the second place " Simulating Colliding Black Holes to Predict Gravitational Waves" and the winning "Math, Engineering, and Technology of Non-circular Bicycle Chain Rings" by Adrian Rodriguez.   • Broads Outdoors Festival

    The Outdoors Festival brings you more than two weeks of activities celebrating the Broads National Park. The programme for the fifth birthday edition boasts a record number of events covering a huge range of activities with nearly 200 opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Running from 2 to 17 May, the festival showcases the wealth of things to do in the Broads. With more than a quarter of the rarest wildlife in the UK, 300 kilometres of footpaths and 122 miles of rivers the park provides a wonderful playground for everyone who loves to get out and about, whether on water or dry land.     Hello to all IET and Network members. This latest community update arrives at the busiest time of the year for the HTN: several major events have just taken place and more are on the immediate horizon.     Known to pracitioners as Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability, CIA, is forever-green in its understanding, making it a constant talking point in any technology platform. As the phases of the project expand, so does its needs. Its not a responsive method so a crash course understanding wont give any more depth when compared to reading whitepapers found though search enging results. The business sets the soft tone of security requirements and its the practitioner that enages the known CIA triage model through hands on experiences of People, Technology and Process.   GP knows patient records must be confidential, Hospital knows equipment must be available to treat patients, Drug manufacturer knows scientific reaserch must have its integrity kept intact when creating drugs for patients.…

  • ROS Workshop 2015

    Over twenty people participated in a ROS Workshop over 16 th and 17 th April at University of Strathclyde. The workshop was organised by the Robotics & Mechatronics TPN exec group and is the second in what hopefully will become a regular feature in the programme of activities. The workshop attracted a group of mixed ability and experience – and rather impressively some folks travelled from London and Bath to attend! Some participants had never touched programming or Linux before, and were looking for only a general introduction, and some were experienced in both and wanted to know ROS in a hurry, and in that respect got more out of the second day than the first.     IET Germany LN: "Present Around the World" in Munich, 26.03.2015 The chairman of the IET German Local Network (LN), Alistair Gill, opened the Munich round of "Present Around The World" not just with a speech, but also with a plank of wood. On it were the words: "You don't get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate", which emphasised the importance of presenting effectively, certainly in the engineering world. This heat of the PATW competition was organised by the IET's Germany LN and was held at the Aviation Electronics Europe trade fair in Munich, to an audience consisting of LN volunteers, exhibitors, visiting engineers and other industry guests.   • Rolls-Royce receives record £6bn engine order

    Rolls-Royce has received its largest order to date, worth £6.1bn ($9.2bn), to supply engines for 50 Emirates A380 planes. It will be the first time the engineering giant has made engines for the Gulf carrier's super-jumbo fleet. The news boosted Rolls-Royce's share price after a year of profit warnings. Emirates said the deal gave further support to trade ties between the UK and the United Arab Emirates and would have a "significant economic impact". Announcing the deal in London, Emirates president Sir Tim Clark said: "Today's announcement is significant not only because it cements the partnership between Emirates and Rolls-Royce, but also because of the significant economic impact that this will have on aviation manufacturing in the UK and Europe."   • Inmarsat-5 F2 successfully deployed into geostationary orbit

    Inmarsat-5 F2 (I-5 F2), the second Global Xpress (GX) satellite, has successfully completed its orbital deployment stages on schedule. The satellite’s two thermal radiator panels have been successfully deployed and the payload has been switched on marking the beginning of payload testing which will take place from Inmarsat’s GX gateway site in Nemea, Greece. The testing, expected to take three weeks, marks the final phase in the mission for I-5 F2. “These were the final deployments to be performed, signalling the last significant mission risk for the I-5 F2 spacecraft,” said Michele Franci, CTO, Inmarsat. “Once fully tested, the satellite will be moved into its final orbital location where it will become ready for commercial service.
