  • Scooter Suitcase

    A Chinese farmer has invented a combined suitcase/scooter. It can carry two passengers, although I wonder how you'd decide how much clothing etc each person would have especially as it weighs 15lb when empty. Better to have one each! The scooter case can cover distances of up to 37 miles and maintain a speed of 12mph. See here for further information on City Cab as its being dubbed. Can you see yourself using one of these to your local airport? It would be handy at the other end if there's long queques for the taxis.

    On the 16 th May a number of IET members and their guests once again met at the Beeldes Lake golf centre for the 2014 annual Brush/Erikson IET golf competition. As usual, the weather was pleasant – in fact probably the best day of the year so far and the course was in great condition. The event followed the usual format; meet up for coffee and bacon roles, then 18 holes, full handicap Stableford – with prizes for: nearest the pin (Chris Price [senior member]), longest drive (Craig Rice [Member]), best guest score (Mike Hayward [38]), best Senior Member score (Chris Price [31]) and best Member score (Craig Rice [38]).   • IET Calls For More Rigour In Mobile Phone Health Effects Research

    The quality of mobile phone health effects research is decreasing, says the IET in its latest position statement. Despite a continuous influx of minor studies finding evidence that mobile phones and other magnetic field inducing devices, including overhead power lines, could possibly cause a wide variety of health conditions, the IET believes there is no reason to worry. In a recently published statement on Biological Effects of Low-Level Electromagnetic Fields, experts from the institution’s Biological Effects Policy Advisory Group (BEPAG), have reviewed about 600 scientific articles and concluded the data doesn’t show a smoking gun.     On the 29th of April 2014, the IET Barcelona local network, together with Bardehle Pagenberg organised a seminar on the Intellectual property in the ICT sector. Our host and fellow IET member Dario gave us a warm welcome and after presentations we were introduced and given an overview on the field of Intellectual property and patents in the ICT sector. Given the vastness of the topic, we were exposed to the essence of the different types of intellectual property, when each of them should be preferred with respect to the others while also explaining why it is important to protect novel technology endeavours.
