    The IET Berkshire local network organised a "Promote Engineering" session with the Local MP, Matt Rodda at the UTC Reading on Friday the 9th of February. The IET Berkshire Chairman, Dr. Abhaya Sumanasena chaired the session and it was organised by the IET Berkshire Committee member Dr. Anthony Bardos. The event was attended by a tech leaders, variety of industry experts, ambassadors and educators across the Berkshire area. The main objective of the meeting was to introduce us to Matt and inform him about the various voluntary activities happening in the Berkshire area.   • Visit To AMRC - IMG Factory 2050 On The 15th February 2018.

    The joint PEI collaboration here in South Yorkshire between IET / IMechE  / ICE and recently the ICHemE once again create an excellent event.On the evening of the 15th February 2018 both the IET & IMechE members of the SY joint PEI committee set up a visit to the  AMRC IMG Factory 2050. Liaising over quite some time in 2017, we finally agreed a visit for both members and the general public to see one of the most advanced manufacturing research establishments in the UK. Interest in this event was very high so the limit of 40 attendees was infact fully subscribed by the latter part of 2017. It was a successful event with over 50 delegates hearing the latest research on RF materials and antenna manufacturing techniques.   • IET Brunei Technical Visit to Narcotics Control Bureau

    Saturday, 3 rd February 2018. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei conducted a technical visit to Narcotics Control Bureau, Prime Minister’s Office, Brunei Darussalam.  A total of 17 IET members joined the visit. They were welcomed and briefed by Awang Osmawi bin Haji Osman, the Acting Deputy Director, and Haji Nawawi bin DP Haji Jaidin, Senior Narcotics Officer I. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is a government department under the Prime Minister’s Office. It was set up on 1 st October 1988 specifically to take over the responsibilities of enforcing relevant drug laws in Brunei Darussalam from the Royal Brunei Police and the Preventive Drug Education activities from the Anti Drug Unit which was under the purview of the Ministry of Education.   The aims of the visit…

    Renowned futurologist Brian David Johnson with IET Honorary Fellow Will.i.am, gave a talk on their view of the technological world coming our way. The evening was chaired by design engineer and 2012 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Yewande Akinola. "It all starts with dreaming" discussed Brian and the need to dream a different dream -  it’s only at that point we know what to engineer. Will.i.am continued that he’s observed that with the amount of investment going into machine intelligence ( A.I ), if the same efforts go into Human Intelligence, like STEM programs, then we can ensure that minds are nurtured the right way  i.e. transformation of society which benefits everyone.   • THE FUTURE OF COMPUTING AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

    The Cambridge IET 2018 Prestige Lecture was given by Dr. Krisztian Flautner who is vice president of technology at arm.  As with all technology comnpanies, arm need to project into the future and plan for the future technologies so they can continue their business.  Over 275 attendees listened to Krisztian's vision of the Internet of Things being the way forward in the post mobile world.  His view was that issues of user and public trust in the technology would be just as important as the actual systems. There is a need to get the technology right but also the finances and economics so that the people took up the opportunities that IoT can deliver.

    Sourcing systems and equipment for Ocado’s robot technology is all part of the job for Mike Lee CEng MIET, an Engineering Supply Chain Manager at the online grocery retailer. When Mike applied for the role, Chartered status was not a requirement, but he says having it on his CV underlined his experience and showed he was a serious engineer.   Engineering at Ocado Engineering and robots might not be the first things you associate with the grocery retailer Ocado. But in fact the company operates a fully automated warehouse known as a Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) using their robot technology. 1,000 robots run across two grids, each the size of a football pitch.     In line with the theme of field based technologies, I attended the Lunch & Learn at the IET Savoy Place in London last week on 'IOT - Are you Ready ?' presented by Mischa Dohler a full Professor in Wireless Communications at King’s College London. He gave a very dynamic understanding of wireless communications and what variables are currently being taken into account to create IoT devices, including how power, energy, security alongside demand and product-delivery will be the key success factors in delivering an IoT ecosystem correctly.
