    The IET H&W network are holding a Raspberry Pi workshop at the 2014 Next Generation Innovators event which is being held at the Three Counties Showground on Thursday October 2 nd 2014 under the leadership of Paddy Fawcett. We will also have a table stand for advertising the IET together with some appropriate material for giving out to the students attending to show them what engineering is all about. We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping at the workshop your participation would be much appreciated.   • Enabling BIM and the Crossrail Smart Railway

    Earlier this month, along with 60 other people, I attended a fascinating and insightful presentation by Ross Dentten, Asset Information & Configuration Manager for Crossrail in London. Ross’ presentation on ‘Enabling BIM and the Crossrail Smart Railway’ gave an overview of the Crossrail programme, current progress and also covered Asset Management. The original specification has now been extended to cover Twyford and Reading and altogether encompasses 40 stations in this £14.8bn project. Rail transport capacity will be increased by 10% in London and will carry around 200m passengers when complete. Within the overall project there are 10 new stations being built, along with 30km of tunnelling and 14,000 people, including over 300 apprentices have been involved in the construction. Crossrail…

  • ARTS TPN Best Endeavour Award at the TT Zero Races 2014

    The ARTS Network decided to award two prizes for Best Endeavour to teams competing in the TT Zero races this year. Kingston University in the UK won one of the awards and we plan to have a blog about that presentation in due course. The other prize was awarded to Team Buckeye Current at Ohio State University. Pete James, Chairman of the TPN took time out from a conference visit in the States to head over to Ohio University to present the award and also took the opportunity to brief the students and staff on his work in Electric Vehicles.   • Pilot UWIAATT - IET TT LN Mentorship Programme

    The University of the West Indies Alumni Association Trinidad and Tobago chapter (UWIAATT) extended an invitation to the Trinidad and Tobago Local Network (IET TT LN) to develop a pilot mentorship partnership programme. This was initiated due to the high demand of engineering students entering the mentorship programme and wanting to be partnered with an engineer.   • Robots That Learn: The Future Of Man Or The

    On 2nd September, as part of the TAROS 2014 Conference, Dr Sethu Vijayakumar gave the IET/TAROS Public Lecture and delivered a fascinating insight into how robots have increasingly made the journey from industry floors to our homes. Some examples given included self-driving vehicles, prosthetic devices, surgical assistants and service robots for drilling, mining and cleaning. The world of interactive, autonomous robotics is a totally absorbing, exciting area and Professor Vijayakumar demonstrated the scientific challenges experienced, and showed some of the cutting edge research that is aimed at making robots as versatile, safe, reactive and adaptive as us humans.
