    1) Expand your network The importance of networking and its influence on your career can often get overlooked, but it has a huge role to play when it comes to professional development and access to the hidden job market. Getting involved in an LN gives you the chance to meet local engineers from all walks of life and stages in their career, and is a great way of expanding your network.   2) Practice new skills in a safe environment LNs give you a great opportunity to practice and develop your soft skills in a safe environment. Use the network as your playground and get your hands dirty in areas such as finance, organisaton and communication, helping you to hone skills you’ll use later in the workplace.   3) Master your people skills People can be funny creatures, and engineers even more so…

RIAT 2019 And Our Surprise Visitor

The volunteers from the IET Aerospace and Satellite Technical Professional Networks were pleased to be invited by the IET Swindon Local Network to join them on their stand once again, which was one of the largest in the Techno Zone this year. The atrocious weather on the Friday, which led to most of the flying programme being cancelled, worked in our favour by generating lots of visitors to the stand.  We were especially delighted to have a surprise visit by Tim Peake, the astronaut.  Whilst on our stand, Tim was kind enough to try some of our activities including the gliding simulator, meet the volunteers and pose for lots of photos.   I thought this year the variety of activities/literature on the stand was excellent and catered for a wide range of visitors at different stages of their careers…

Who's Watching Who? (IET JLB Lecture)

"Data enabled products with 2 way interactions enables better consumer recommendations" was just one of the discussion points the panel speakers reviewed. Peter Docherty (CTO, ThinkAnalytics),  Simon Parnall (Principal Advisor Broadcast Technology, Ofcom), Barry Flynn (Senior Lecturer, University of Westminster London), Jamie West (Deputy Managing Director, Sky Media UK) and Phil Haggar (Digital broadcast and streaming consultant) talked about how the evolution of managed networks to non-managed networks is now creating immense opportunity (and value) for quality content consumption models. Simple examples were given such as how adverts are only delivered when the target audience is 'online' and not on pre allocated viewing slots. Smart tracking (with consent), can give a completely personalised…
