    The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GHIS) is proud to host the joint conference for the International Cost Engineering Council (ICEC) and the Africa Association of Quantity Surveyors (AAQS) in October 2020.The conference is expected to attract over 400 local and international participants from a variety of professions including: Quantity Surveyors Cost Planners Cost Engineers and managers Project Managers Contract Administrators Other allied professions Researchers and industry practitioners are invited to submit abstracts for industry and academic presentations for the upcoming ICEC-AAQS 2020 Conference.     The University of Westminster and the IET's Vision and Imaging Technical Network worked to organise this event in its 9th iteration.As well as 3 days of interesting talks and demos, The Vision and Imaging Network gave awards to the best technology demo in the field of Vision and Imaging.   • S.P. Thompson Pamphlets: Electric Clocks

    The Silvanus Phillips Thompson pamphlet collection was collated and arranged by Thompson, the former President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in London. The collection covers a wide range of topics in physics and chemistry including electrical horology. Particularly, a box titled: ‘Electric Clocks and Time-Indication III’ (UK0108 SPT/P/I/065), illuminates Thompson’s interest in electrical synchronised clocks and his involvement in the Synchronome Syndicate Limited. It includes correspondence and pamphlets from the Synchronome Syndicate Limited and the Synchronome Company Limited. Synchronome System and S.P Thompson Frank Hope-Jones met George Bennett Bowell during their time at the Hope-Jones Organ Company.…

  • UWI 12th Public Seminar On “Project Management Practices In The Caribbean” On Saturday 14th December 2019.

    There were over 70 participants including invited guest speakers, Project Management professionals, academics, students, and delegates from industry who are interested in the theme “Project Management from Quality and Industrial Engineering Perspectives” who attended the Seminar. Many participants commented that the presenters were very knowledgeable about their areas of expertise and the presentations were interactive and informative. Attached are some photos of this successful event, which was hosted by UWI in collaboration with IET TT LN and other professional bodies in Trinidad and Tobago.

    "The longer you engage with a robotics platform the harder it gets for the platform to spot learning patterns" explained Dr Gaudl, Lecturer at University of Plymouth at the 'Robotics in Education' Christmas evening lecture organised by the IET Central London Network held at the IET Savoy Place. He went on to explain that without patterns robots cannot learn and it’s this innovation challenge within the Operating Systems used by robots that will make or break the launch of low cost robotics industry. People are likely to respond to this new industry if the robots actually work, and so far they are working! .. well think robot steps not pigeon steps.     The Institution of Engineering and Technology Brunei Local Network held its 22 nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Friday, 29 th November 2019 at I-Lotus Restaurant, Kampong Rimba. The AGM received the Chairman’s Report for the Session 2018/2019 and also the election of the new Office Bearers, Management Committee Members and Auditors for the term 2019/2020 was elected. The new management committee is comprised of professionals from both the government and private institutions.     John Metcalfe, senior director in Apple’s silicon engineering group and Jonathan Redshaw, Director in Apple’s platform architecture team took to the stage at the IET London:Savoy Place for the IETEngTalk series lecture. They spoke about how developments in silicon fabrication techniques are allowing Moore's law to remain relevant within the chip design industry.   • Rare Books Blog: Martin Del Rio’s Magical Investigations

    The latest Archives blog, from Daniel Simkin, IET Research Librarian.   The image above shows the engraved title page of Martin Del Rio’s Disquisitionum Magicarum or Magical Investigations, published in Latin in 1603. It examines the practice of demonic magic and gives advice on how to identify and punish witches, as well as others who Del Rio regarded as heretics. Magical Investigations first appeared in 1599 and as an important work on demonology has been reprinted many times. The IET Archives holds two copies of Del Rio’s work, one in folio size from 1603 and another later edition in quarto size from 1679. Although there are some differences between the editions in the engraved title pages, both show scenes of the Ten Plagues of Egypt from the book of Exodus. Moses is pictured performing…

    On the weekend of November 9 - 10, the IET's Americas Communities Volunteer Conference 2019 was held at the Aloft Hotel Downtown in Houston, Texas, USA.Around thirty volunteers from across the Americas region converged in Houston in early November for networking, sharing best practices and ideas, learning about updated strategies and activities from the IET, the Communities Resourcing Committee ( CRC ), the Communities Committee - Americas ( CC-A ), the Communities Committee - Technical Networks ( CC-TN ), the Young Professionals Communities Committee ( YPCC ), and getting some hands-on experience with the DIY Faraday Challenge Day ( DIY-FCD ) and micro:bit STEM education activities that can be leverage by IET volunteers in the Americas.
