  • University of Sheffield Lecture - 21st February 2017

University of Sheffield Lecture - 21st February 2017

Last nights lecture by Professor Alejandro Frangi looked at the facinating field of Biomedical Engineering working with their CISTIB team based at the University on ground breaking technology in the world of medicine. The link below gives a greater insight to the 5 pillars which the CISTIB work with. Although a highly technical lecture, Professor Frangi described how medical data can be gathered from patient information into a discreet hub to systematically improve medical procedures in this area of medical science. The lecture brought out the importance of multidisciplinary engineering working with medical practicitioners to move forward improvement to social well being. http://www.cistib.org/ Alan Chater CEng FIET SYLN.

Meet The Tutor - Introduction To Content Protection

Graham Turner has worked in the pay and digital television field since the late 1980s.  His initial involvement was at BSB where he headed the company’s conditional access activities.  In 1991 he and a colleague founded Farncombe Technology, a consultancy and software house specialising in pay and digital television and telephony security. In 1993 Graham and two of his colleagues were commissioned by the European Commission to write the chapter on Conditional Access and Subscriber Management in the Green Paper used to initiate the DVB Project.  At Farncombe Graham also undertook the security audit of a number of conditional access systems as well as leading the development team that created a subscriber authorisation system which managed a million satellite pay TV subscribers for several years…

The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Australia & New Zealand annouced today its first seminars of the 2017 Seminar Series, held in Perth, Melbourne (Thursday, 16 March 2017, 1 Spring Street), Sydney and Auckland.  Seminar Series Program  here . Tickets are limited but at special rates for IET Members . To avoid delay, book your ticket today. Getting Smart About Metering An Essential Component of Electricity and Water Management You can’t manage what you don’t measure, but are we are measuring properly? Why is something so basic done so badly? We know that good metering is an essential component of high performing buildings (there is good reason why Green Star makes it a key feature), but time and again building owners and managers find that they can’t get meaningful…

    Cyber Security and Hacking

Our grateful thanks for e2e-assure for an excellent but worrying lecture where they demonstrated hacking including "ransomware" and "man-in-the-middle". Please see the attached PDF. Their message - don't download any files from an email, etc. from an unkown source as it can include ransomware and malware. It was most worrying when the man-in-the-middle could see you enter your full credit card details as you logged in to one bank who ought to know better!  Many many thanks to Simon Vernon and Mark Peart for giving us all valuable lessons on how to use the internet.

  • Rapid Assay Readers and Medical Diagnostics

Rapid Assay Readers and Medical Diagnostics

Lateral flow tests also known as lateral flow immunochromatographic assays, are simple devices intended to detect the presence (or absence) of a target biochemical marker without the need for specialized and costly equipment. The most common of these devices is the home pregnancy test which tests for hcG in urine. Outside of pregnancy testing, these simple tests can be used with blood, urine or saliva as a quick diagnostic for the presence of drugs, diseases like HIV, Hepatitis C or Malaria as well as more common items like the presence of Vitamin B12. Each test strip is often made from materials that enable capillary action, such as porous paper or polymers, to allow the test fluid to ‘flow’ along the strip. Once soaked, the fluid migrates to the second element (conjugate pad) in which the…

Training Courses; Another Way To Contribute Towards Your CPD

Continuing Professional Development, or CPD, is the maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills relevant to you remaining a competent engineer or technician. As you will know, the Engineering Council has stated that members of the institution should undertake a minimum of 30 hours of CPD a year. These 30 hours can be achieved in a number of different ways, including through training courses. Here at the IET, we offer many different courses, which cover a range of different topics and these are delivered in a variety of ways meaning they are accessible in at least one means to those interested.   Below is a breakdown of how many hours could be included in the different types of training we have to offer at the IET: Face to Face Training 1 Day Training Courses – 7 hours: Our one day…

  • National Cyber Security Centre Officially Opening 14th February

National Cyber Security Centre Officially Opening 14th February

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) will be opened by the Queen today (14 February), in London. There has been a lot in the news recently about cyber-attacks, not just lower level personal attacks (ie identity fraud, stealing individuals credit card details), but the bigger national and international attacks (ie attacks on local governments and the alleged Russian interference in the US election ). Even more frightening is the revelation that the UK faces dozens of cyber-attacks every month and two thirds of businesses have faced an attack in the last year. The aim of the Centre, which is part of GCHQ, will be to make the UK one of the safest places from these cyber-attacks. They will look into flaws in public sector websites, spoof emails and shut down phishing websites. This response…

Update: The Retired Professional Engineers' Club, Bristol

Message from Eur Ing Michael Rowe, R.P.E.C. Chairman The Retired Professional Engineers' Club, Bristol was established by Michael Clinch some 22 years ago but, over the last few years, has suffered from a failure to gain new members, decreasing attendance at meetings with no-one coming forward to replace retiring Committee members. This is a situation common to many social and charitable organisations, many of which have closed in recent years. The Bristol Association of Engineers closed at the end of 2015 after 120 years of distinguished existence. Failure to replace committee members is no reflection on the membership : many have served previously and are now too old or sick to serve again. Indeed, every remaining committee member has increasing health problems. It has also become increasingly…

Turning Around South East - Britain's Most Difficult Railway?

IET Central London Evening Lecture Savoy Place, 08-Feb-2017  (Joint with IMechE railway section) Speaker: Andy Derbyshire, Chief Operating Officer, Network Rail South East Route The South East rail network is big: very big and very complex - the most complex in the UK, accounting for 25% of national journeys. I couldn't take in all the facts, but I did get that message!  As anyone who commutes in this area knows, it's not performing as well as we want, for a number of reasons. The challenges faced are immense, such as: Loads of conflicting moves No ATR (Automatic Train Regulation) The busiest stations Ancient infrastructure Implementing the Thameslink programme at the same time They can't operate to the current timetable - there's just no resilience in the system.  Their permanent state of…
