  • Faraday Challenge on the Road Once More

Faraday Challenge on the Road Once More

Mackie Academy in Stonehaven was the venue for the first of the 2014/15 Challenge Days, with Kinross High, Larbet High, Bearsden Academy, Kilwinning Academy and Lockerbie Academy being the other hosting schools in Scotland. The Kinross Challenge Day had teams for Kinross High, Perth High, Perth Academy, Kirkcaldy High and Queen Anne High from Dunfermline pitting their wits to see which team could come up with the best solution to the Challenge. Throughout the day there was a real buzz as the members of each team went enthusiastically about their allotted roles. Setting out their ideas, developing their 3D models, and making use of the tutorials on the building of electronic circuits that would make their finished design stand out from the others. The highlight of this Challenge was the opportunity…

The Healthcare Technology Network's 2014-15 program commences this month but first I would like to take the opportunity to look back over the events that the network has supported this summer. One of our aims as a network has been to produce quality content from our supported events and I am pleased to say that we have achieved this with the events listed below. London Critical Data Marathon 5-7 September 2014 This event took place in London alongside parallel events in France (Paris) and the US (Cambridge, MA). The idea was to bring together healthcare providers with data scientists to answer clinically-relevant questions over the course of a weekend. An efficacious prescription for data-led problem solving

On Wednesday 8th October, the IET Central London Events committee were welcomed by The Royal College of General Practitioners in Euston Square for the first of our monthly lectures at their superlative venue (until we can return to our real IET home at Savoy Place late in 2015). There, an appreciative audience found much to ponder upon as Dr. Geoff McGrath of McLaren Applied Technology (MAT) spoke on “Data-Driven Design Delivers Fast-Track Innovation”: A fast-paced and stimulating view of how they have worked with a number of organisations to solve problems using their focused analysis of data. We all know that McLaren are a high-performance/F1 motor company, even if we didn’t know that they provide the data telemetry for all the Formula1 teams. Yet who knew that MAT get involved in so many…

22,295,864 amazing things you need to know about the UK’s newest satellite – TechDemoSat1

Two of the biggest challenges facing suppliers and academic institutions working within the space industry are providing ‘flight heritage' for their systems and components, and the long lead times associated with proving space technologies. Satellite companies and others in the space area are understandably reluctant to trust new hardware without proof that it is fit for purpose. But without expensive flight time, it's almost impossible to provide that proof. TechDemoSat-1 is an attempt to break through that barrier, functioning as an in-orbit test facility for innovative UK devices and software. Olivier Ezratty Technology Blog (in French)

I had the opportunity last week to listen to a presentation by Olivier Ezratty on innovation in technology. He is a very enthusiastic speaker on technology. His subject was particularly the pressures for innovation: the opportunites presented by new, cheaper, components development, and the social development of people which pushes for more and more in products. He is a blogger on the subject and if you are interested and read French, you can take a look at his blog Options Libres here: http://www.oezratty.net/wordpress/.

    London Critical Data Marathon 2014

The Healthcare Technologies network was proud to sponsor the London Critical Data Marathon which took place over the 6th and 7th September 2014 alongside parallel events in Paris, France and Massachusetts, USA. The event ran over the course of the whole weekend and brought frontline healthcare providers and data scientists together to answer clinically-relevant questions. The main focus of the event was for the participants to work with the MIMIC-II which is a large open access ICU database. It empowers those who have not typically engaged in research but who possess a deep understanding of the information gaps as well as the elements involved in practice, to contribute to and become part of a data-driven learning system. The weekend provided an opportunity for the delegates to enjoy some interesting…

To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day this month the IET is working with Wikimedia to run an edit-a-thon for our members. We are offering you the opportunity for a training and networking day, co-sponsored by Wikimedia UK. This is part of a worldwide celebration of Ada Lovelace Day, a focus point for activities around women in STEM careers, named after the first computer programmer. You will learn how to edit Wikipedia, and will work together to create and improve articles about female engineers as women are under-represented on Wikipedia, both as participants and as subjects of biographies. You will have the chance to network with engineers from other companies, to discuss initiatives that support women in their careers. We will be inviting trade press to document these positive steps. The outcomes…

Resilience And Cyber Security Of Technology In The Built Environment

This briefing is essential reading for those involved in the specification, design, procurement and operation of buildings where there is a convergence of corporate IT and building systems, including industrial control systems (ICS). The technical briefing examines the different sources of threats across the building lifecycle from initial concept through to decommissioning. It considers potential threat agents that could cause or contribute to a cyber security incident and identifies some of the measures that may be appropriate to reduce the risks. Economic and environmental pressures have encouraged the convergence of technical infrastructure and computer-based systems. Cyber security and resilience incidents are becoming increasingly common as these converged systems are being connected…

An Interview with Leon Daniels from the Bus Innovation: How Green Can Buses Be event

On 17 th September 2014, Central London held an event about the innovative green technology being implemented in the new Routemaster buses. The speaker, Leon Daniels, has been working in the bus industry for over 40 years. He is currently the Managing Director of Surface Transport and has involvements in the transport elements of the Olympic Games. We caught up with Leon at the event. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? I’m Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at Transport for London. It’s a job I have been doing for 3 and half years. In my past I have worked for the government, shipping, publishing and I fell into transport by accident. As soon as I got into transport I realised that I loved it; during the course of my time I ran sight-seeing buses here in London,…
