  • Remote Sensing Of The Saturnian System - A Tale Of Two Moons

Remote Sensing Of The Saturnian System - A Tale Of Two Moons

You may have noticed that whereas there is usually at least two weeks between talks, the final event of this year is a little early. That means there are no programmed lectures between December 8th and January 12th. However, with the kind permission of Dr Graeme Awcock, who is an Honorary Fellow of the School of Environment and Technology at the University of Brighton, we have three recorded lectures for you to view over the holiday period. Some of you may recall Graeme’s talks to us in past years on imaging technology and remote sensing. He has recently developed three, one hour talks under the heading ‘Remote Sensing of the Saturnian System - A Tale of Two Moons’ and made them available to IET Sussex members between Christmas and the New Year. Due to copyright reasons, each talk will only…

  • Essential First Steps To Gathering, Coordinating And Organising Manufacturers’ Product Data

Essential First Steps To Gathering, Coordinating And Organising Manufacturers’ Product Data

Take these six steps to structure your product data and get ahead of the game. In this article we set out the first steps a product manufacturer should take on their journey to structure product data. This is a simple process focused on understanding how your company works with information and data* about your products. This process is usually called a data strategy. It will include a methodology for defining product data consistently across the business, a strategy to roll out appropriate capability across the business, and systems to provide consistent product data, enabling it to be shared externally with your customers and partners. These steps should be taken before embarking on any investigation of the standards or technology. In order to comply with the UK and European processes emerging…

  • Energy Storage and why it's critical to NetZero (IET Shropshire Network)

Energy Storage and why it's critical to NetZero (IET Shropshire Network)

'Energy as required not as available' is the approach towards UK's NetZero energy-storage requirements explained Bridgit Hartland-Johnson Integrated Systems Innovation Manager of Offshore Wind UK at the IET Shropshire webinar moderated by Simon Hart. Explaining how energy-technology is already in place and now a key enabler for any regional 2020 energy strategy the technology infrastructure is proving itself, we are finally able to experience moments of what a carbon neutral UK might look like with less reliance on coal (finally). The generation of energy from offshore wind technology is now cheaper compared to onshore wind generation efforts when considering a new-build effort - this is really good news for the UK. In just 10 years, the wind and solar technology has demonstrated a contribution…

The Future Of Construction Is Not 3D BIM Objects

This article looks at 3D BIM objects and what went wrongBack in our second article we briefly touched on how the BIM object development exercise became a ‘very expensive failure’ for many manufacturers. We thought we’d look in more detail into why geometry is not the holy grail of BIM, why information management is so much more than geometry, and why we will be recommending to readers of the Plain Language Guide for manufacturers that they don’t think about 3D BIM objects but think about owning and controlling their data.   A misplaced devotion to 3D A BIM object is a 3D digital representation of a construction product, material or system, with associated data attached. If you’ve attended any BIM events over the last five years or so, you’ll often have heard the lament that “BIM is not 3D”…

Digital Transformation: Unlocking Engineering Excellence (ICE Hong Kong Association G&S And IET Hong Kong Young Members Section Webinar)

Digital Transformation for built environments is ready to enhance sustainability designs explained Mr. Jacky Chan who is the Associate Director and the Advanced Digital Engineering (ADE) Leader at Arup. Mr. Chan explained how artificial intelligence (A.I) and machine learning (M.L) is an enabler for efficiency and optimisation. Operational technology building mechanisms like fire alarms, water, building materials all traditionally had to be manually monitored, however in the new smart buildings being introduced, with the use of sensors or IoT devices, green sustainability and civic life will likely benefit. He described the use of 'building intelligence' will give optimisation levels of 30% and this is without the use of other sustainable mechanism like solar panel, wind or e-generators. With…

  • The Senster

    The Senster

I really enjoyed hosting Alex Zivanovic from Middlesex University last week. His passion on the works of Edward Inow~ er, never can pronounce his name, but it in no way detracts from the incredible animal-like kinetic art he has produced. Alex, like Edward, is enthusiastic about his work and the works of this artist, and his expertise in lecturing is evident in his friendly approach. My favourite part of the event was when we had a discussion about cybernetics, both in our respective lounges, and discussed the questions from the Q&A panel box. Watch it again here: Now available on  https://youtu.be/MVGEXSPaO_c

  • Manufacturers Should Host Their Own Product Data

Manufacturers Should Host Their Own Product Data

In this fourth article we move on from talking about what structured data is to look at who owns it and who should control it. So far in this series of articles we have described what construction product data is , how it needs to be connected to standards , and how product comparison is a key example of how structuring your data is essential . Now we move on to the data itself – who owns it? Who should control it? Don’t forget to sign up to the zoom call in a week’s time (link at the foot of this post). Product Data is an Asset In 2006, Clive Humby , the mathematician who made a fortune helping Tesco develop its new Clubcard, said “ Data is the New Oil ”. Humby was talking about how data needs to be refined to be valuable, but the phrase has been used by many since, including by Brittany Kaiser…
