    Get ready to “Eat, sleep, engineer, repeat” on 14 October, as Air Marshal Sir Julian Young takes the stage for the international online broadcast of his President’s Address.The main address is at 1pm BST, and he will challenge you to think about how we keep inspiring generation after generation of engineers. How do we ensure that we learn from and mentor each generation of engineers – both ahead of us and following on?   • Honorary Fellowship Awarded To Former NASA Engineer And YouTube Sensation Mark Rober

    YouTube STEM sensation Mark Rober has become the newest IET Honorary Fellow for his outstanding contribution to aerospace engineering.Mark is an American YouTuber, engineer and inventor. He is known for his YouTube videos on popular science and do-it-yourself gadgets and has over 18 million subscribers. Before YouTube, Mark was an engineer with NASA for nine years where he worked on the Curiosity rover at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mark also worked for Apple in their Special Projects Group undertaking Product Design as Mechanical Engineer. He recently received the IET’s STEM Personality of the Year award in a worldwide competition that celebrates an inspiring individual who is changing the narrative on what it really means to be an engineer or technologist.   • Sustainability - A Smash-hit **** TV Series?

    If reality was a TV series, when is the big reveal going to happen? If this was a TV series, then the end of the previous season would have ended with the news that Climate Change was confirmed after all, and the closing shot would be all the main characters looking shocked: believers and deniers alike. The next, and final, season would start with the usual TV trick of not addressing the cliff-hanger at all, and instead, would show some flashbacks of the main characters, from which we piece together that there is a smart solution, and that’s what then happens in this season, neatly finishing with a grand resolution.  Unfortunately, and sorry for the spoiler in the run up to the long-awaited 4th ‘Matrix’ movie, but this is reality, and so there isn’t a neat twist waiting in the wings. Unlike…

    The recent IPCC report (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) makes clear that we now face a “ Code Red for Humanity” and if you are not convinced by mere words, pictures of wildfires from the Mediterranean to Siberia and “ heat domes” over the Pacific Northwest should be enough. Climate change is just one of the areas where humanity is pushing at natural environmental limits. Pollution and reductions in biodiversity are other examples where our collective abuse of the environment is now only too apparent. While governments need to act, we as media engineers, technologists and practitioners can and must play our part.     Bob Stuart from MQA, gave deep-insights in understanding if digital audio is as good as it can be, during an online lecture jointly organised by the AES UK Section Cambridge Group and IET Cambridge Local Network. His talk explained that by better defining objects we can achieve better sound recording and playback abilities. He started by explaining how the fundamentals of psychoacoustics and neuroscience from auditory sciences help us understand pure tone frequencies/harmonics and contrast them against vocalisation and stimulated sound. Advances in neurosciences, is now letting us do more, like dealing with more natural signals. When humans encode, for example, the intensity of sound to 'loudness', it is nonlinear, like when we encode frequency to the subjective element of 'pitch'. Our frequency…

  • South Yorkshire Online Engineering Extravaganza event 8th July 2021

    After considerable organisation, we finally managed to hold an online 'Engineering Extravaganza' event with 4 local schools. We went out to 12 schools initially but understandably, due to variety of issues, this was eventually whittled down to just 4. All these schools managed to accommodate sourcing all the necessary materials for all the activities we ran on the day. IET delivered the 'Motor Madness' activity which we've done live over several times previously and chose this being familiar with any potential queries that arose. All schools managed to complete the activity with just a steer from ourselves which on the day was Matthew Morton and Dan Hardy as STEM Ambassadors and myself  coordinating the whole day for IET SYLN, as required.     A talk that features our own Orford Ness aspidistra This is the story of Broadcast Group of the Diplomatic Wireless Service (DWS) which had its origins in the Political Warfare Executive (PWE) at the beginning of WW2.   In 1972 it was amalgamated into the administrative structure of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and was renamed Communications Engineering Department (CED).  The latter had two groups, Broadcast Group which was responsible for transmitters carrying many of the BBC’s World  and Vernacular services, and Communications group which provided radio communications to embassies for diplomatic traffic. I was recently reading a book on philosophy ( Fullerton, 1915 ), as one does during a lockdown, and was particularly interested in the views of philosophers through the ages on the subject of the ’mind’ and how people viewed themselves beyond their physical self.
