  • Patryk Wilk Received The 2019 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student Prize

    Patryk Wilk, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, has been awarded the 2019 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student PrizePatryk received his prize of £250 immediately after the 3rd September ceremony where he received his degree.  Andrew Dodd of the IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Committee handed over the cheque and a certificate summarising the reason for giving the prize to Patryk.  Patryk received the prize on the recommendations from his tutors, including Senior Lecturer Rafid Al-Khannak.  Patryk had an excellent and consistently high standard of work throughout his studies and academic performance on his course “BSc (Hons) Computing and Web Development”, including his outstanding Project.  He applied sound project management and technical skills to devise and deliver an effective…

A possibility to make it a business case to extend the application to housing energy supply without compromising our care for the environment.     The IET Standards team are looking at a proposal for a Guide to Earthing and Bonding of 25kV Electrified Railways and are looking for comments.   The Scope of 25kV Railway Earthing and Bonding Requirements This guide aims to assist train operators, railway designers and installation contractors in adopting a harmonised approach towards E&B design philosophy for 25kV railway infrastructure. This will be in line with implementing a common earth system formed by bonding lineside assets and structures to the traction return system, effectively forming a low impedance meshed earth network. The guide will therefore undertake to explain the principles of a common earth system (traction and non-traction) which is able to provide a robust and low impedance path to earth.     Conference on the history of women in engineering. 2019 marks the centenary of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The Society was founded to support women engineers who, although welcomed into the profession during World War One, were often told “not to get comfortable” and came under pressure at the end of the war to leave the workforce to release jobs for men returning from the forces. The Women’s Engineering Society sought to resist this pressure, but also to promote engineering as a rewarding job for women as well as men. The STICK conference seeks to celebrate 100 years of WES and women in engineering.     Last night I attended the presentation by Tony Reid on Backroom skills in Glasgow and it prompted some thought.Tony took us on a journey to illustrate the non-technical skills required in our working lives, although there are lessons for our non-working lives too. Using the scenario of applying for a job, from CV, application form and interview, getting the job and working on a project Tony illustrated a wide range of skills required. Although we can stay silent, even that gives a message, and along with our body language, we are giving an endless stream of messages that is being read all the time in any face to face situation. Tony explained how these can be misunderstood and how they change across cultures. What is acceptable in one culture is not in others, using Japanese culture as an example…

    The winners of the IET Engineering & Technology Photographer of the Year Competition 2019 have been announced This week we announced the winners who demonstrated the ingenuity, breadth and vibrancy of engineering and technology from the 450 entries received from young people and adults across the world.     UniMAP IET On Campus (UIOC) had organized a site visit to project LENCONGAN BANJIR BARAT (LBB), department of irrigation and drainage, JPS Perlis. This event purposed to provide the platform for participants either experience or learning the overall technical operation of the irrigation and drainage system in Perlis, Malaysia. PPP representative team have guided the participants to their monitoring room complete with system SCADA. He introduced about the operation of SCADA system and function of every facility built around the dam. It was set up in middle of the main river at Perlis and supplies water to the people of Perlis as well as prevents any occurrence of flood in the state of Perlis.

    The Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) On Campus of UCSI University has successfully conducted their first 3D Printer Workshop on the 27th and 28th July 2019. This workshop aims to provide a comprehensive review of additive manufacturing technology to students in addressing various types of real-world problems. Through this workshop, students are able to learn about the theoretical knowledge of 3D modelling as well as to gain extensive practical experiences via the assembly and calibration of 3D printers.   • [Heriot Watt IET OC]: 181019 Chumbaka Workshop and Visit

    HWUM Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Student Chapter has organized a trip to Digital Maker Hub Cyberjaya in Cyberjaya on the 19th October 2018. The workshop provided some basic level of the methods to make a simple mobile application on an android device. The participants quickly engaged with the workshop contents and swiftly grasped the fundamentals for utilising the suggested app, which is the MIT App Inventor 2 and the companion web software for it. The application provided a beginning platform for the participants to be engaged with the concept of programming as it features a very user-friendly UI and drag-and-drop for the bulk of the programming.

    A new international cost control standard for the construction sector will help bring greater confidence to an industry that is critical to creating resilient and successful projects.The second edition of the International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS 2) was developed by a 50 strong global coalition of professional bodies, including the IET Project Controls Network.   • IET launches new 'Inspiring the Next generation of Engineers' report

    New research shows six to 15-year-olds' attitudes to engineering and technology have improved since 2015 The IET commissioned CHILDWISE to explore the attitudes and feelings six to 15-year-olds have towards engineering and technology, focusing on STEM education and, consequently, how children, parents and teachers feel about engineering and technological careers. The research concluded that children’s love for STEM subjects is on the decline, with interest in Science amongst nine to 12-year-olds falling 10 per cent, Design and Technology down 12 per cent and ICT/Computing falling furthest at 14 per cent over the last four years.
