The event was developed to answer one question: “Have you ever wondered where else a STEM degree can take you?” Often many STEM students choose a career path that is aligned with their specific degree. As an engineering student myself, I used to think that engineering is the only way to go. However, STEM students tend to disregard the career possibilities in other sectors…

IET Aerospace TPN Reaches For The Sky At The Royal Air Tattoo At RAF Fairford

Back in July, together with some of the Aerospace Technical Professional Network volunteers I helped out on the IET stand at the RAF Tattoo at Fairford.  The stand which is organised by the Swindon Local Network, has evolved over the years from a 3’x3’ space to the point where this year, it was one of the largest in terms of floor space in the Innovation Zone marquee. In addition to the STEM activities that the Swindon LN had provided, which consisted of some excellent quality hands-on activities that they’d acquired for the weekend, there were a number of IET Education 5-19 items such as ‘Build a Torch’ and new for this year ‘Build a Glider’.  The Aerospace TPN volunteers had fun being competitive in seeing whose glider could go the furthest!  Sadly despite being the daughter of a former Aeronautical…

My Smartphone Thinks I Drive To The KFC Restaurant Every Morning, Should I Be Concerned?

There’s no doubt that smartphones have revolutionised the way we work, play, communicate with others etc but sometimes I do wonder if it’s all a bit too much…I have a map app on my phone (nothing new there, so do most smartphone users) and most of the time I find it really useful as it can tell me where I am if I’m a bit lost and, most importantly, where I’ve parked my car!  But sometimes its knowledge of my travel habits concerns me. I recently became aware that my phone also knows quite a lot about me, where I travel to and from, at what time and interestingly on which days. My phone is connected to my car stereo via Bluetooth technology which means I can use the phone completely hands free whilst in the car.  #noexcuses for handling the phone as I can do everything on voice commands “Siri…

  • Salient Features - Password Policy

    Salient Features - Password Policy

Passing Bletchley, I thought how password techniques have progressed over the years.   I recently had opportunity to review salient features applicable to a password policy - This blog post will review some of the features : 1) Enforce the use of unique accounts: A unique user ID should be mandatory to gain access to a network resource. Shared or generic user accounts should not be used. 2) Enforce the use of complex passwords: Password should be alphanumeric, include upper and lower case letter and some special characters. 3) Enforce Minimum Password Lengths:  A minimum of at least 8 characters should be used. 4) Enforce Password Changes: Password changes should occur every 90 days. 5) Disallow Reusing Passwords: One time use will ensure a lower chance of compromise. Password history policy…

IET Tasmania Network - Is Hobart's Future Transport On Track?

160 people packed into Town Hall on 2 August evening for IET Tasmania Networks Q&A debate on Hobart’s future and its transport systems. Professor Peter Newman said, “New technology such as Trackless-Trams would be ideal for working with Hobart's rail line. You need to make a start and capitalise on elections which this time looks like a wonderful opportunity as you have the unprecedented support for Hobart Light Rail from the Prime Minister. Given the existence of the Northern Suburbs rail line it’s a very logical place to start a long overdue upgrading of Hobart’s public transport and to build much needed housing at the same time”. Tasmanian Minister for State Growth and Treasurer Peter Gutwein suggested the City Deal is the launch pad for capital for such rail projects and we need three levels…
