  • President's Innovation Survey

    President's Innovation Survey

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is seeking to map the current landscape of innovation. We are keen to explore the biggest innovation opportunities and challenges for Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that work in engineering and technology sectors. We want to look into how the IET can support SMEs most effectively in this area. With that in mind, we’d be very interested in your responses to a brief survey . Your answers will help us shape and develop pragmatic and realistic ways of informing and supporting engineering practitioners and their organisations. Please have your say and help us make a difference

Wizards, Robots & Sentient Beings ..and A Starstruck Audience. (IET Savoy Place).

Renowned futurologist Brian David Johnson with IET Honorary Fellow Will.i.am, gave a talk on their view of the technological world coming our way. The evening was chaired by design engineer and 2012 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Yewande Akinola. "It all starts with dreaming" discussed Brian and the need to dream a different dream -  it’s only at that point we know what to engineer. Will.i.am continued that he’s observed that with the amount of investment going into machine intelligence ( A.I ), if the same efforts go into Human Intelligence, like STEM programs, then we can ensure that minds are nurtured the right way  i.e. transformation of society which benefits everyone. Currently, Will's support for STEM programs are seeing an 80 % graduation of students going directly into robotics…

  • THE FUTURE OF COMPUTING AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

THE FUTURE OF COMPUTING AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

The Cambridge IET 2018 Prestige Lecture was given by Dr. Krisztian Flautner who is vice president of technology at arm.  As with all technology comnpanies, arm need to project into the future and plan for the future technologies so they can continue their business.  Over 275 attendees listened to Krisztian's vision of the Internet of Things being the way forward in the post mobile world.  His view was that issues of user and public trust in the technology would be just as important as the actual systems. There is a need to get the technology right but also the finances and economics so that the people took up the opportunities that IoT can deliver.

T is for Training courses – CPD resources (TWAVES)

There are many activities that can count as CPD and training courses would probably be at the top of your list. However, do you actually know what is available to you as part of your membership with the IET, or even if you are not a member? Do you take full advantage of CPD resources provided by the IET? Do you know that we offer lifeskills workshops (usually held in the evenings) and webinars  (online learning) that are free to attend? Do you know that we also offer open courses (face-to-face) and e-classes (online learning) with discounts for members? What is your preferable / most effective way of learning? Face-to-face? Online? Let us know about IET training courses you have attended in the comments below. More information about training options that the IET provide can be found on our…

  • The Chartered Engineer Behind Your Grocery Delivery

The Chartered Engineer Behind Your Grocery Delivery

Sourcing systems and equipment for Ocado’s robot technology is all part of the job for Mike Lee CEng MIET, an Engineering Supply Chain Manager at the online grocery retailer. When Mike applied for the role, Chartered status was not a requirement, but he says having it on his CV underlined his experience and showed he was a serious engineer.   Engineering at Ocado Engineering and robots might not be the first things you associate with the grocery retailer Ocado. But in fact the company operates a fully automated warehouse known as a Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) using their robot technology. 1,000 robots run across two grids, each the size of a football pitch. They identify and retrieve boxes containing specific products, then deliver these to a picker who takes out the required number for…

Astronomy: Principles Of Observing (Thursday 22/02/18 @ Cleopatra Hotel)

Astronomy: Principles of Observing Everything we know about the universe is through the observation of waves, visible radiation for the first few tens of thousands of years of our civilization, the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum in the past century or so, and gravitational waves for the past couple of years. This talk will examine the factors in making astronomical observations possible, and their evolution from the time of ancient Greece to the recent detection of gravitational waves. Specifically, we will discuss the collection of waves, their analysis and their detection, including how to optimize each observation to the 'family' of waves it aims to use, the environmental factors affecting these observational ventures and technological factors improving or deteriorating them. We will…

IoT - Are You Ready ? (IET London Network).

In line with the theme of field based technologies, I attended the Lunch & Learn at the IET Savoy Place in London last week on 'IOT - Are you Ready ?' presented by Mischa Dohler a full Professor in Wireless Communications at King’s College London. He gave a very dynamic understanding of wireless communications and what variables are currently being taken into account to create IoT devices, including how power, energy, security alongside demand and product-delivery will be the key success factors in delivering an IoT ecosystem correctly. Interestingly, three years ago the concept of 'Subnet of Things' was introduced by Jim Morrish at the 2014 IET Pinkterton Lecture in the heart of India's tech hub - Bangalore - at the GE's John F. Welch Technology Center. As a key take away, he specifically…

Opportunities and Challengers of Malaysia Small & Medium Industries In Next Industry Revolution

IET Malaysia Local Network organized a technical seminar on 14th OCT 2017 (Saturday), at Aloft Hotel Kuala Lumpur on Opportunities and Challengers of Malaysia Small & Medium Industries In Next Industry Revolution. The invited speakers were Ir. Dr. Tan Chee Fai and Ir Dr. Leong Wai Yie. More than 20 delegates attended the event.   During the seminar, the speakers have mentioned that the traditional manufacturing industry is in the throes of a digital transformation that is accelerated by exponentially growing technologies. The pace of change reflects ‘Moore’s law’ on the speed at which information technology-driven change happens. Companies and their industrial processes need to adapt to this rapid change if they are not to be left behind by developments in their sector and by their competitors…

  • A Great Tour Of The National Ignition Facility

A Great Tour Of The National Ignition Facility

IET NorCal had a great tour of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) on Friday. About 10 IET members and non-members toured the NIF with our expert guides who covered everything from the precision of the laser to the continuous pour techniques used to make the glass to the high speed X-ray diagnostics that peer in to the heart of the imploding capsule! A big, big thank you to all those at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who made the tour possible. If we can get a photo, we'll post it!

  • WA IET YP Team Bonding And Planning Day 2018

WA IET YP Team Bonding And Planning Day 2018

Words by Emmanuel Iloh The Event started with participants meeting near the Cactus on Forrest place from 10:30 AM, this was a great meetup location because the Cactus is iconic and very easy to locate, some sort of sign for identification would have helped for those who are new to the committee and may not have known anyone already there. Due to some participants been a bit late and we ended up starting the event at about 10:15 AM. We were then assigned to 4 teams at random, with executive committee members as the leaders of each group. In our newly formed teams, we were given an hour and a half to complete the puzzles of the scavenger hunt, based at different locations around the city. The puzzles were a great way for us to break the ice between our fellow team members and the commute from…

Our speaker Frank Rayal, founding partner of Xona partners  presented a comprehensive and dynamic lecture on blockchains, their use and some typical applications, including Bitcoin. The audience was fully engaged and audience feedback is good with the main comment being that the talk should have been longer! At the opening of the lecture, David Mann introduced our speaker and mentioned to the audience that this talk was a shrunk version of a four hour workshop being delivered the following week by Xona Partners in Asia. The speaker took the audience through development of Blockchains and Crypto Currency, He introduced the audience to the so called and mysterious inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto . His original paper on Bitcoin can be found here   . Our speaker explained the opportunities…
