  • A Great Tour Of The National Ignition Facility

A Great Tour Of The National Ignition Facility

IET NorCal had a great tour of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) on Friday. About 10 IET members and non-members toured the NIF with our expert guides who covered everything from the precision of the laser to the continuous pour techniques used to make the glass to the high speed X-ray diagnostics that peer in to the heart of the imploding capsule! A big, big thank you to all those at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who made the tour possible. If we can get a photo, we'll post it!

  • WA IET YP Team Bonding And Planning Day 2018

WA IET YP Team Bonding And Planning Day 2018

Words by Emmanuel Iloh The Event started with participants meeting near the Cactus on Forrest place from 10:30 AM, this was a great meetup location because the Cactus is iconic and very easy to locate, some sort of sign for identification would have helped for those who are new to the committee and may not have known anyone already there. Due to some participants been a bit late and we ended up starting the event at about 10:15 AM. We were then assigned to 4 teams at random, with executive committee members as the leaders of each group. In our newly formed teams, we were given an hour and a half to complete the puzzles of the scavenger hunt, based at different locations around the city. The puzzles were a great way for us to break the ice between our fellow team members and the commute from…

As A Platform For Decentralized Economy, The Transformative Power Of Blockchains Impacts Every Industry Sector

Our speaker Frank Rayal, founding partner of Xona partners  presented a comprehensive and dynamic lecture on blockchains, their use and some typical applications, including Bitcoin. The audience was fully engaged and audience feedback is good with the main comment being that the talk should have been longer! At the opening of the lecture, David Mann introduced our speaker and mentioned to the audience that this talk was a shrunk version of a four hour workshop being delivered the following week by Xona Partners in Asia. The speaker took the audience through development of Blockchains and Crypto Currency, He introduced the audience to the so called and mysterious inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto . His original paper on Bitcoin can be found here   . Our speaker explained the opportunities…

Satellite Swarms & Mega-Constellations For Global Connectivity (IET Beds & Herts Local Network).

In line with the theme of field based technologies I took opportunity to see how satellite developments are expected to meet consumer demands by attending a lecture on Satellite Swarms - The Launch of Satellite Mega-Constellations for Global Connectivity by Jonathan Higgins, Director, BeaconSeek Ltd.   A while back, I researched the QoS mechanisms required to provide Wireless VoIP for residential use over a carrier grade network - at the time modelling payloads using the DECT frequency range. Since then, we have seen carrier grade providers create simpler home based TCP/IP apps that allow you to use their carrier grade services on your phone. This is almost the norm now and has set the expectation for all home utility services to have some form of presence on your smart device. Jonathan discussed…

Achieving the impossible with robotic micro-surgeons

Important note: These are the author's personal recollections and interpretations, which are likely to suffer from errors and selectivity. There is no endorsement from the IET or the speakers. 146 members and guests packed out the Turing Lecture Theatre at Savoy Place for the first IET Central London Evening Lecture of 2018 to hear from Christos Bergeles from the UCL’s Wellcome EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical sciences. What's at the cutting, even bleeding, edge of technology... and yet isn't? The answer to that riddle is Christos' robotic microsurgery, as it doesn't cut (currently) and doesn't cause (much) bleeding. Christos introduced his research group approach as building on the three themes of: Navigation, Clinician experience and Precision Instruments. Fundamentally, surgery…

    CES 2018

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas this week with the usual offering of brilliant, gimmicky and downright crazy gadgets on display.   The conference wasn’t an entirely successful one this year – rare rainfall caused black outs and there were a few tech fails including the LG robot failing to respond to the CEO’s demands but as usual there were some entertaining IoT products to come out of the event.   Samsung announced that it was introducing SmartThings – a central hub for all of its various IOT products Velco’s Wink Bar, a smart handle bar for bikes won the 2018 Showstoppers Prize   Intel demonstrated their drone light show above the Las Vegas skyline – something which they believe could take over from traditional fireworks     What IoT gadgets from CES caught your…

McAfee Chief Scientist talks about all things Cyber

We were lucky enough to catch up with Raj Samani, Chief Scientist at McAfee, ahead of his keynote address at our Cyber Security for Industrial Control Systems conference on 7-8 February.   Read this exclusive interview, in which Raj talks about security solutions, what the industry can do to prevent the next WannaCry, his involvement in the No More Ransom initiative and why it’s childishly simple for an 11-year-old to buy stolen data on the dark net. http://ow.ly/z6AB30hFKcg

Latest video update on Climate Change

I did a series of lectures on Climate Change, ending at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where a group of eager young students quizzed me on many aspects of environmental management. Though NZ contributes little to greenhouse gas emissions, the attendees were passionate about the climate and maknind's impact upon it. I did one update, after the Paris Agreement that seems to be now in jeopardy. Here's the second, concerning the Climate. https://youtu.be/6zB5oUvCPU8 .
