Radio TechCon 2017 took place at Savoy Place yesterday. The event was very lively and the number of attendees filled up the Turing Lecture Theatre to the point where there was standing room only at times! The MMC sponsored the event and we had a stand in the exhibition area in the Maxwell Library where refreshments and lunch were served. It was good to meet a number of people during the day and to be able to discuss the IET's relevance to their careers and industry.

Our education display table was well visited throughout the afternoon with much interest in the “Tomorrow’s Engineers” Career Route Map. My thanks to Ian Martin for his help which allowed us from time to time to network with the other organisations where we were able to make some very promising contacts for our 2018 – 2019 events programme.
The Midlands Power Group, in the form of its delegates, were delighted to receive fascinating and informative talks from Stuart Powls, Head of Railway Procurement and Hugh Mace, Head of Power and Mechanical & Electrical Engineering - (HS2) Ltd. Stuart’s theme was procurement with content that was central to Railway Systems Procurement and processes (HS2 Phase 1 and 2a). Thought provoking views were given relating to the process of procurement and the many challenges inherent in these processes i.e. reconciling HS2 advanced concepts and aims (in terms of train speed and frequency of operation) with timelines for completion, particularly phase 1 completion in 2026- in engineering and construction terms, it’s not that far away. Hugh’s theme was centred on providing traction power to the project…

The following is an excerpt from a new White Paper published by the IET on the growing importance of A&I databases. Librarians and researchers shared their thoughts on how they use search tools for academic research and highlighted the differences between curated resources and general search engines. "In recent years the principles that drove the development on the World Wide Web – access to information across international boundaries – have been increasingly eroded by commercial and political concerns. Students have become increasingly dependent on global general search engines as gateways to information, but at the same time these gateways are becoming less and less helpful. The challenges for professional researchers using the open web include the way cookies are used and the increased level…
Tomorrow is Black Friday and officially time for the holiday shopping to begin! Black Friday sees many retailers slash their prices, especially for technology. However IoT products will also be used to manage the high demands for online orders This Intel article discusses some of the ways that retailers will be using IoT, including RFID-based tags to track products from production to distribution, managing inventory, analysing retail trends and even customer engagement. As Black Friday grows even bigger, not just in the US, but in countries across the world, we can expect IoT to dominate in making Black Friday a slick operation for both retailers and consumers. However IoT doesn’t just play its part in making sure Black Friday happens it is also a chance for consumers to get their hands…

IET Consultation Through this consultation the IET asks members to critically review the current proposals and status of the Northern Power House (NPH) and provide evidence that will shape the future of how the NPH is delivered and the benefits it will deliver. The questions to be reviewed as part of this consultation should include: Are the barriers (pillars) identified in the Industrial Strategy Green Paper and the NPH Strategy correct and how can they be addressed? Is the NPH working and if not what needs to be done to move forward? Is the current “focus” on infrastructure and influence the right focus, and if not where should this focus be? Are there any opportunities in the North for improving supply chain leverage and connectivity across different organisations, including SMEs? This may…
