Association for Project Management (APM) versus Project Management Institute (PMI) - Opinions Sought

As I sit in Savoy house enjoying a rather nice breakfast and the view over the Thames prior to attending today's Exec Meeting I muse over the question above.  Over the last couple of months I have been tidying up my professional accreditations with various Institutions and have come to this long awaited rhetorical question.  In the field of Project Management which of the two organisations above should I join.  What are the benefits (and negatives) of joining either body.  Do we as members of IET have a formal stance relative to this?  What is the Recognition of each within (i) The UK, and (ii) International?  How do these bodies align to Cost Engineering Bodies? In posing this question I hope it will trigger some discussion from other members that will both inform the reader and also aid me…

  • Visit to RAF Valley

    Visit to RAF Valley

On the 2nd March 2017, a group of members and non members visited RAF Valley on Anglesey. During our eventful afternoon, we saw how parachutes are maintained and deployed, life rafts are deployed along with emergency rations and other survival equipment. We then toured the hanger used to maintain Hawk T2 jet training aircraft and were impressed at the complexity of the aircraft and the skilled staff who maintain them. Many of the staff are now from outside companies who employ and train local staff as far as possible. Next we saw two rescue helicopters and were given an in depth guide to how the helicopter works and a demonstration of the hydraulics operating the rotor blades. Altogether a fascinating afternoon and we would like to thank the staff of RAF Valley who were so kind to take time…

ARTS Network On Track For 2017

2017 geared up in style for the ARTS TPN with their Electrification in Motorsports Seminar which was held at Coventry Transport Museum.  This location really complimented the event topic, with displays of cars from world rallying to F1.  At the event itself we had our own exhibits as well to enjoy during the networking sessions, in the shape of a student formula electric car from University of Surrey and two electric bikes from Saietta and the University of Nottingham.     Click here to read this excellent technical article that we've produced around the seminar topic and also a filmd Techbite which you can view below. The TPN also took the opportunity to present their 2016 MotoE Racing prizes to the University Bath and Nottingham teams.   If you’ve not yet seen our videos that we produced…

Do You Know An Inspiring IET Volunteer?

IET Volunteers are the lifeblood of the institution and without them we would not be able to undertake the diversity of events, seminars and professional registration activities that make the IET our professional home for life. In 2015, the IET launched a new Achievement Medal for major and outstanding contributions voluntarily given to furthering the aims of the IET.  The award recognises the importance of volunteers to the IET in its mission to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community. Volunteering contributions that would constitute outstanding achievement might include: • Insight in development of new initiatives to achieve IET aims • Successfully adapting initiatives to work in a specific context or region • Leadership shown in development and growth of IET initiatives…

What Is Happening InThe Districts – Western Isles

Sorry I missed last week, but I have been out and about.  So a little later than expected, I am looking at the Western Isles district. For those that don’t know the layout of the Scotland North Committee, the area is split into districts that each have a representative on the Scotland North Committee.  The Committee pulls together the event plans for the year and submits the budget.  The Scotland North Committee organises events in Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth, Thurso, Orkney, Shetland, Stornoway.  These events cover a range of engineering, management and general interest. Bit of background for those on the community page who are not local. The Western Isles is a chain of islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the Northwest coast of Scotland. The Islands are also known as the  Outer Hebrides…

  • Robot Ethics

    Robot Ethics

The 2017 Robot Ethics event took place on February 23rd at the IET Savoy Place. This year’s event focused on medical/surgical robotics and the ethical implications of their use. What are the degrees of autonomy of a medical robot? Is the company, the programmer, or the operator responsible for the robot’s performance? Can we program empathy on robots to make them feel guilty when they make a mistake? What regulations can governments impose to medical robots so that patient confidentiality, safety, and approved decision-making can be guaranteed? These were the topics addressed by two noted researchers, Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang from the Hamlyn Centre of Imperial College London, and Dr. Catherine Easton from Lancaster University. Prof. Yang, a renowned researcher in medical robotics, indicated where…

    Community Manager Update: February 2017

By now you will know that we had to cancel our February event in Teacher Building, Glasgow due to the adverse weather conditions.   I am really disappointed abut this, as I know we had lots of folks looking forward to attending, but safety must come first.   I was especially looking forward to meeting some of the volunteers from the ACostE committee in Glasgow. We will definitely reschedule the event for sure, and will let everyone know as soon as we can.   Planning continues for our next event on the topic of Agile, so look out for further information over the coming weeks. The exec committee are meeting on Friday in London and one of the Agenda items for discussion will be our future programme of activities - and it's not too late to contribute - if you have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions…

Transforming Smart Phones Into Medical Appliances (IET Southern California Event).

Talking about field based technologies last month, I took opportunity to attend an insightful event hosted by IET Southern California where Neven Karlovac of Cellmic LLC spoke about the changes now seen in medical field based technologies, specifically around using smart devices as field based medical apparatus. Cellmic have created a simple smartphone attachable device that uses holographic lenses and computer algorithms to analyse medical samples in the field, whether its pandemics, food sampling, or mobile medical vehicles. The smart medical device is already being used in the field, and provides a very innovative use of transistor count on an IC chip Vs pixel rates of smart phones. The sample is placed on a digital sensor into which, through a pin hole, a LED light is sent. This creates…

The IET Tribology Network’s flagship event, Challenges in Tribology, is being held for the second time in March 2017.   This event is set up to share knowledge with people in industry who can apply it to improve competitiveness and sustainability, and to foster valuable dialogue between industry and academia within the UK.   The inaugural 2016 event, celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the Jost Report, brought together 100 people with a passion for Tribology.   This year’s event has been developed to build on that success. Again, the organisers have been successful in attracting an array of leading speakers from the UK and internationally. It will run over two days, each with a defined theme: Thursday 16 th March: Challenges in Transport Friday 17 th March: Materials and coatings for extreme…
