Help with installation / diagram

Hi,

I am after some help with a heated windows installation / diagram - grateful for any input.

Unfortunately, the company supplying the installion went bust and I have been left with a system that doesn't  work (incorrectly designed).

We had a local electrician do the first fix wiring based on the diagrams but he says what has been sent won't work in it's current state and he doesn't have the relevant expertise to adjust it.

We live in a rural area and electricians are not that common especially for something as complex as this.

Rather than post up the diagrams and go into too much detail initially, I just wanted to know if this is a place to ask for advice and if not could anyone point me in the right direction. e.g contact details for an electrical engineer.

Thanks.

Hi Tutty, this is the best place on the whole WWW to receive Electrical advice, if you can post pics and diagrams they help a lot :)

    Thanks for the reply.

Please find attached the original installation schema.

I believe the windows are in the diagram are designed to be installed in series in blocks of 2 or 3 - our original electrician wasn't really happy with this and installed a connection to each pane independently back to the control board (I'll take a photo of that and post).

The original brief was that the downstairs and upstairs where seperated so that we could just have 1 section working if necessary (which they obviously aren't). I am more bothered about getting the upstairs working as we have UFH downstairs.

If anyone can shed any light / has any ideas etc it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.
  • Do they have independent cables back to the controller or the transformer?

I read the diagrams as having a relay at each window which has an independent power cable back to the transformer and a interlinked signal cable back to the controller via the other window relays.

The first page shows the control wiring and the second page the power wiring.

    Hi Andy,

Many thanks for taking the time to have a look.

I'm no electrician - just the basics. Tbh, I think the whole thing confused the electricians we had on site even though they assured us they understood it all.

I've attached some pics of the unit that all the wires come back too - each window has a connection coming back directly to the box at the bottom as seen - these are labelled to say which is which.

Each window has a junction box with blanking plate where the 2 wires from the window are connected to the cable going back to the box pictured.

There was a transformer sent (still in box) - I'll dig that out & send some pics.

    Thanks.

  • Have you got a three phase electric supply and is it a three phase transformer?

    Andy B.
  • Andy it’s a single phase supply hence the links on the main switch. Doesn’t look the best at the moment, but the main thing is to check you’ve got all the correct cables in place first. Could be the sensor cables that are either missing or the wrong cable used.
  • Then again the drawing shows it using a three phase supply. So as you say where’s the transformer? And is there two control panels?
  • Next question is why is there only a 2.5 T&E supply cable, there must be some more equipment or is this why it can’t work.
  • I have never installed and wired one of these systems, so I don't claim any superior knowledge to those electricians you already have.

How many of those consumer units do you have? I assume this one is suppose to be supplied by the 76 volt 32 amp connection on the transformer to supply windows 1, 6, 8, 10 and 16 and there are other consumer units for the other windows grouped by their operating voltages; with each window having a direct supply from its relevant consumer unit, with the exception of the two of the stairway windows 3 and 5 which are wired in series direct to the mains, but still through a relay to control them.

I am guessing there should be the equivalent of six consumer units, bearing in mind these a European consumer units have three rails in them, it needs to be taken into account that their plastic enclosures could be considered an issue in the UK and you need to take additional fire precautions.

I am hoping that the consumer unit shown in the photos has not been powered up connected to the windows at mains voltage.

  • In amongst the control gear that was supplied, how many RCDs are there?
