Beach Hut

Hi all

Been asked to wire a beach hut up that apparently has its own supply

I only really do domestic work and 90% new builds so this is slightly different.

Is there anything I need to be aware of ? Should I have a earth rod, fuse board height ? Etc etc

Thank you for any help

  • If you need a rod or not will depend on the supply arrangement - if it is TT you definitely will . Depending how equipped the hut is -is there water supply for example ? it may be more or less like wiring up a small house.
Generally however it may be unoccupied for the winter, so being installed in a way that is mouse proof, and not too worried about condensation dripping off windows will be considerations, as will the fact that folk will come in with wet hands, and possibly bare foot and scantily clad, so the shock risk is higher - that may inform many things like choice of light switch and location of fittings to be out of accidental reach, and the RCD testing actually matters.
It may be worth a look at what has been done in other huts of a similar design if you can arrange it, to see what to copy and what to avoid.

  • I would favour cord operated light switches, in order that they can be safely operated with wet hands and no shoes, as is likely.

Splash proof socket outlets for the same reason. All sockets RCD protected , as they may be used to supply equipment outdoors.

SWA cables due to risks of vermin damage.

  • A drive-by comment: Treat as if it's a bathroom? (plus the other better informed comments;-)

So no sockets to plug in the kettle, radio, etc?

yes you can,  just 2.5m or more from the nearest bath tub or shower tray. 13A sockets allowed in UK bathrooms for some time now.
edit wow, just checked and it was almost ten years ago for 3m, and more than 3years  for 2.5m,  and look, no predicted uptick in deaths....

  • To give some more information guys, its a beach hut but its not directly on the beach.

Its up on a esplanade high up some steps, so not sat directly on the beach

  • I would be very wary about driving an earth spike in if it's on a public promenade. You have no idea what is below ground.
